Changing timing belt but not the water pump

Hi all

Just wondering if this is stange I have a 2017 SEAT IBIZA FR 1.2 TSI and it's overdue to have the timing belt changed due to age, got onto a garage (not a main dealer) and they said unless the waterpump is leaking that I don't need to change it, I always thought you changed both together, has anyone come across this? everything I read online says do the two at the same time

Bearing goes in the water pump = bye bye engine.

Is water pump run off the TB in that engine or independently mechanically operated

That's not necessarily true. You'll get an engine temperature warning first. Providing you stop and don't let it overheat, you should be fine.

The water pump is separate on that engine. It’s not ran off the timing belt, it’s on the other side of the engine.

It’s recommended to change water pumps that are driven off the timing belt in case it seizes and destroys the belt, which won’t happen on that engine.

I had the water pump replaced on a 2017 1.2 tsi golf recently, which is how I know.
presuming it’s the same on an Ibiza.

No if the bearing goes you will instantly have a destroyed engine as the belt either strips the teeth or jumps the timing

The other reason you do both (on a timing belt driven pump) at the same time is that you have 90% of the job done when the timing belt is off so there is little extra cost other than the component to do the pump at the same time.

Depends on the car. And according to the post above, the water pump on that car is not driven by the timing belt.

Aha. Well in that case why bother. You change the water pump and the clutch goes!
