He left early too probably because the MAGA team were getting a shallacking.

MAGA were big mad at the half time show also.

Bad day all around for them.

I now see what Trump meant when he said about DRAINING THE SWAMP. But I did not think that he is going to drain it COMPLETELY DRY which will include all the ‘ framework/Scaffolding ‘ so that it remains dry. He has not decided yet as to what to do with the ‘green field’ situation left

I can appreciate that Trump needs to be “seen” to be doing things in his first 100 days- I get that. Is it wishful thinking that this will settle down in say 6 months time? Placing the markets in turmoil with the aluminium tariffs seems a daft move and medium term trust will be eroded -tit/tat tariffs from other countries on US exports etc leading to stagnation - no winners and a lot of losses.

It suits Trumps base support and popularity to announce all of this but when Americans start hurting in a few months time it’s not going to be pleasant - if you ramp up production basing the market on the new tarries what happens when they’re negotiated downwards even 1 year later? US Companies will fold in debt and job losses - I’m all for disruption where progress is achieved but this is simple protectionism that is anything but stable.

There is no clarity about Trumps plan, mainly because it isn't a plan. It's an idea.

He has no clue how to do it, who will do it, who will pay for it. No timeline, no final objective and no plan on how to deal with the myriad of problems.

Don't confuse clarity with acceptance that some parts won't work. Trump is making this up as he goes along.

He will now 'let' other countries be involved because he now worked out US cannot do it on its own and avoid boots on the ground. Which he said wouldn't happen. So this latest kiteflying is the admin trying to see if others will bail Trump out.

A bit like the way we got "isolated" because of Brexit like you told us over and over again????

Not going to happen - Also , most of those Pharma companies are now technically Irish as they all moved and "incorporated" here.

It takes several years to build a new Pharma plant , so even if they all tried to leave in the morning , it wouldn't change anything anytime soon and certainly not within the lifetime of this administration

I never called it a plan- I called it a stance

Also, isn't it the case that you cannot place tariffs on pharmaceuticals under WTO rules? I believe they are a protected export / import (for obvious reasons).

I don’t see it settling down because he’s not really doing anything apart from signing a bunch of executive orders. He has no interest in going through proper channels to try and enact legislation, because that’s too much like work. The bonus for him is that he looks busy and the sheer volume of things he’s trying to do makes it difficult for opposition to block it effectively.

So I would expect it to continue - more tariffs out of nowhere, more unconstitutional executive orders, more access for Elon to do whatever he likes within the government. The moment he settles down is the moment he gives the opportunity for the democrats to get their shít together. And the reality is that he has an industry of people putting it all together, so all he has to do is sign a few things, make a few speeches and play a hell of a lot of golf.

You might be right , but would that stop Trump trying?

In the American context I think it is fairly easy to determine where at least a significant portion of the population thinks it went too far when you look at the actions the Trump administration have taken. Hiring targets is obviously one. I can't say for sure what the author of the piece had in her mind without rereading it. I'll try to find it again, but a lot has been written in the last week.

The pendulum will swing too far back the other way now.

Insulting people who take an opposing viewpoint won't change any minds by the way.

Correct - though I think medical devices are not included and these form a significant portion of Ireland - US exports.

FWIW I think that he'll target food products specifically identifiable as Irish - Kerrygold, whiskey etc. I heard last week that some Irish manufacturers are rushing to build up their stockholdings in the US to get ahead of any impending actions.

Equality in employment is the word. Using "traits" as a reason to deny some-one a job over some-one you feel is more able says a lot.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Trump tried to withdraw the USA from the WTO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,879 ✭✭✭✭aloyisious

Give him time, he's only a month into the job. Musk hasn't got into his stride yet on cost-cutting returns to the taxpayer and recipients of federal tax dollars.

So much for the other sets of tariffs Canada was threatened with being a tool to get Canada active on anti-drug smuggling and illegal immigration into the US, along with Canada increasing its spending on Defence.

I don't DEI was ever supposed to favour people with employment or other social disadvantages, more it was intended to not to allow them to be automatically dismissed from consideration. Once that has been achieved they would be subject to the same criteria as everyone else. The tendency to take everything to extremes has meant that either people passionately despise DEI or take it to lengths that were not intended.

Trump is proposing a 25% tarrif on steel (and aluminium), but I have a vague memory of reading something to the effect that US steel is not the same as steel from other places and is not suited to some uses, so that could create some issues, if I have it correctly.

Edit. No, it appears I am wrong, the difference is that US steel is more expensive because of environmental and labour requirements. So Trump could easily deal with that.

So he held a press conference with the leader of Israel to talk about a stance?

So you dmit this is all just top-of-the-head stuff from Trump, and he hasn't got a plan or even an idea of how he could achieve any of it.

I suppose it's a step up from the 'concept of a plan'. Or maybe it isn't. I'm not sure what you mean by stance in this context.

There's that and the simple fact that the US does not have anything like the capacity to produce Steel/Aluminium in the required quantities so costs will go up no matter what.

Cost go up with Tariffs anyway , but this will add even further costs as no matter how much Trump bleats on about "open factories in America" , it simply cannot happen overnight , or in the case of heavy industry like Steel Production , Years and years.

It's why Trump lied about "US Steel are opening new production facilities" the last time around.

And I’m not sure why you’re pizzed with me but you are - I simply posted an article and commented on it - you replied with all sorts of untrue insinuations and are continuing to do so - I’ve no interest in engaging thanks.

Anti-discrimination legislation has been around for decades - it then moved towards targets and quotas simply because whilst companies may have complied with this legislation it didn’t necessarily mean greater opportunities for minorities and disadvantaged materialised -ie they got an interview but never got a job sorrta thing -which I think then led it down this path.

Whilst it has brought great improvement in terms of respect at work culture which was well needed, I think it became overly complicated - you don’t need to employ a bunch of fulltime staff banging this drum - it should become business as usual and instead became a very complicated and quite a confrontational and aggressive industry- I’ve known of very experienced senior managers very well read on this area corrected by young upstarts at meetings over maybe a debatable mis-use of a word, and I’m not talking pronouns here either - it needs to settle down a bit and find its equilibrium.

Trump is trying to bring down the cost of living (in the US) by imposing tariffs on products that Americans use in their day-to-day lives. He's also forced every federal worker back to the office and offered all of them 8 months pay redundancy

At some point these actions will have to result in increased prices, sooner rather than later hopefully

Most powerful man in the world.

Emasculated by a female pop star half his age.

Particularly with his USAID shuttering and his tariffs lark, he really has opened the door for Russia and China to strengthen relationships. They must look at posts of his like that and literally rub their hands in glee.

Right now certainly hard to argue against what you’ve said - 4 years of deflection, turmoil, tying courts up in knots, smoke/mirrors, threats and of course more tarrifs

Maybe some of that can be curtailed with the mid-term elections but that’s still 2 years away

It's like the joke about the NRA forgetting to rise up against tyrannical government. There's also an important bible story set in the Israelites' escape from Egypt where Moses' brother Aaron melts down their gold objects to make them a golden calf to worship.
