I've only made one comment on this particular situation but fair enough.

But if you just visit the Garda station you might get in contact with the owner and settle outside of insurance? Surely its worth a try, again depending on how much you value your time

Thanks for all the inputs. Sorry it took a bit longer to reply. I was out all day yesterday and didn't get a chance to pull the footage and blur the face. That's done now.

This is the first clip of when he arrived and dinged the door.

This is the second clip when he left

I'll pop down to the local Garda station today and get it recorded. Hopefully they can get him to contact me and sort it outside of insurance. I might see him again in the meantime this week, good idea on having it on the phone as suggested.

@sk8board, I certainly have no intention of claiming it on my own insurance. It will be the other person's.

To be honest, those clips are not conclusive by any stretch. Even on the second one he is clearly making sure he doesnt hit your car by holding the door as he squeezes in himself. There was contact in the first one but hard to say its enough to do damage.

You might find that he will deny it with the suggestion your car was already dented and you're trying to blame it on him, particularly if he thinks he didnt do it.

Can you post a pic of the damage?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 825 ✭✭✭amdaley28

Looking at the footage it seems he deliberately tried not to hit your car. By all means report it at your local Garda station but unless the damage is serious I can't see them doing anything about it.

It's an unfortunate incident but you may just have to bare the cost yourself. The problem is spaces in car parks are just too narrow.

I don't drive anything special but I usually park as far away from everyone else as I can.

Not seeing anything damage worthy there, sorry.

You guys didn't see the door bounce back on the first clip? This is the one that did the dent.

The second clip he was at least trying to be careful and I don't think that hit at all (at best resting against), that I agree, I only load the second one for comparison.

As I said in the initial post, it is very difficult to see the vertical dent line unless at the correct angle.

    image.png

I know people will say the dent is minimal, nothing to see here and move on. It pissed me off to no end that I have to fork out repair for someone else's carelessness. Car park space can be small but any decent person would at least put their hand behind their door when opening so that at least their hand comes in contact first, not swinging out the door hoping for the best.

Anyway, I have my answer from earlier response, I'll pursue it and see how it goes.

indeed, like I said, there was contact in the first clip but it’s minimal.

He can argue it didn’t cause it. You are dependent on two things here…

    He knows he’s guilty

He admits it and is willing to pay.

If he feels otherwise on either of those you’ll be getting nothing from him.

It’s still worth an ask. Worst case you get a no. I’ve been in this situation myself and got the gardai to make contact, they denied it but paid up when they saw my video. My video was conclusive though.

The second clip does not aid your cause

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,272 ✭✭✭lau1247

Why specifically focus on the second clip? They don't have to go hand in hand. One can happen without the other.

..because when I look at it, it appears the person is actively trying to avoid tipping your car

Probably because of the damage they caused the first time round…..

    Just throwing that out there…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,621 ✭✭✭John arse

Yeah exactly,he hits it the first time and then tries not to the second time- simple.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,159 ✭✭✭Jofspring

And he may have seen the screen turn on to say sentry mode activated when he hit the first time so was extra careful the second time. Looking at the picture though it may just be a quick PDR. Might only cost about 50 quid to sort.

Got it done a few years ago, a dent right on the line along the side of the car so an awkward spot. There were two of them. €50 per dent.

the video doesn’t show the car being hit - any Garda loo

you’re going to take those two videos to the guards and claim a fellow parent at the school damaged your car?

Again - this is just bizarre!

It’s annoying, it’s unfortunate- but if you think this “twat” had conclusively damaged your car, I can’t wait to hear what the guards say.

(I know it wasn’t you who called him a twat, or that they’re somehow “getting away with it”)

Sometimes security camera just serve to make you madder.

99.9% of door dings go unpunished. It’s happens to every single one of us.

In the future park your precious car away from all other cars or bubble wrap it or something and the Garda certainly have better things to be spending their time on than this self entitled nonsense.

They may have better things to do, I pay my taxes like everyone else, like I said, why do I have to be out of pocket for someone else's carelessness.

As for your "self entitled nonsense" comment, all I want to say to you is I won't take it to heart because you won't feel the same until it happens to you!! Imagine you come back next week to your car in a car park and the front side bumper got side swiped, no witness, no dashcam and the culprit got away with it. Take a few mins to really really imagine it, tell me then you don't feel the same way as I do. (And don't you start justifying damage severity, damage is damage!)

I would build a bridge and move on. Life too short.

For your child’s sake even as you don’t want to be known as a Karen.

I'm not seeing how the contact shown in either clip could possibly cause any damage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,010 ✭✭✭McCrack

    You pay taxes!!

Good grief man, you really are self entitled.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,496 ✭✭✭MarkN

I’ll tell you one thing, you’ll have paid for a full respray of that car in wasted battery charging if you keep using sentry mode. It eats battery.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,183 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

It depends on location and activation. I’d only use it out and about. Wouldn’t use it at home in the garden.

It can use 1-2% over a normal work day in a quiet car park. I’d take that hit for the security of 6 cameras dash cam if it was mine.

Whoa nelly, get off your high horse there. Garda a public service (all tax payers paid for) and objectively I am in need of said service to help me track down the owner (What is so entitled about it??). I didn't ask for any special treatment. You need to remove that chip off your shoulder. Just because you didn't deem it worthy does not make my situation any less legitimate. God forbid that you need said service one of these days and someone call you entitled for it. Ridiculous.

Similar to what Gumbo said, I only have sentry turned on anywhere except home or workplace exactly for the purpose/situation I have now. It is a small price to pay, call it "cost of doing business" if you must.
