    Nice review.

I drive a Tesla M3 Highland so I agree that the one pedal driving is amazing. My wife likes it too and, as she currently drives a manual petrol Seat Ateca, once it is comfy and reasonably roomy, it might fit the bill.

The Citroen eC3 and the new Fiat ePanda are also worth a look but I prefer Hyundai's pedigree in the EV market.

I agree. I believe Hyundai has struck a good balance between price and the features the car offers.

We considered eC3 and the ePanda (I feel they're kinda the same cars underneeth as they're both brands of Stellantis). But price to performance /usability ratio, and as you rightly stated, Hyundai's experience with EVs makes inster a no brainer in this price bracket.

Yeah the khaki green suited it against the white and black of the rest of the car. My wife went mad for it when she saw it (we were in collecting her i20 after a service) and said that it will be her next car and in that colour.

I'm very pleased with it so far. Very easy to drive, smooth and quiet. Absolutely no complaints about the performance. Everyone is amazed at how much space there is inside - the sliding rear seats are a game changer (only avaliable on the Elegance). I'm 6ft and the driving position is fine. This is my first Hyundai so I'm still getting my head around the infotainment system - there's an impressive amount of options and customisation. It's light years ahead of our Ariya. Great to see physical buttons for all the important functions. The heating/cooling is very quick too. The ambient lighting is nice and bright and loads of colour options.

It comes with a regular and a granny charging cable, two towing eyes and a puncture repair kit.

Now for my gripes! In Ireland the light interior is only available on the launch edition which only comes in buttercream yellow - definitely wouldn't  have been my first choice. I could get it wrapped - matt or satin khaki green might be nice. From what I've read it's best to wait 6 weeks for the paint to fully cure so maybe buttercream yellow will grow on me in the meantime. It certainly is an attention getter. Downsides to wrapping would be the cost and maintenance. Also changing from light to a dark colour means that door sills, gaps etc really stand out. On balance I'll probably won't go for it.

The parcel shelf is ridiculous. I appreciate the thinking behind it but having it at the front of the boot blocks loading so I've already taken mine out.

It would have been better if the boot and door sills were in a darker plastic - I've order some clear protective tape from Amazon. The wife and kids are under strict orders re food and dirty shoes! I normally wouldn't be a fan of light interiors for practical and aesthetic reasons but really loved the retro vibe of this one.

Cabin storage is very limited which doesn't really bother me as I don't tend to keep anything bar charging leads in the car. Although I did take the manuals out of the glove box.

Wireless android auto and carplay would have been nice particularly as there's a wireless charger. The wireless adaptor I bought on Aliexpress works surprisingly well, very quick to connect and no lag. I've only used it with an android phone so will try an iPhone today and report back if there's any issues.

I plan to take out on the motorway today to check out the cruise control etc. I'm not really into one pedal driving/regen/monitoring efficiency but can certainly check them out  if anyone's interested.

In conclusion no regrets and I'm glad I went for the Elegance edition.

Thanks for the AA dongle info. I just ordered two - great price.

Can't wait for your motorway test results. We had an e-Niro (64kWh, no heat pump) before and now an Ioniq 5 (77kWh + heat pump) and the range was pretty much the same (heavier car with bigger battery has approx the same range as the ligther car with smaller battery - heat pump or not). I'm curious what to expect from these Insters in real life (we ordered the Signature, but due to short journeys we don't seem to benefit from having a heat pump anyways).

"My SO and I both did a short test drive. Comfy to drive and ergonomics felt nice. I wouldn't call it the best handling hot hatch but it's planted on the road."

That's because it is not a hot hatch.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Agreed - if you want a hot hatch just buy one if you can afford the insurance.

Why would you need an additional wireless adaptor? It does have both Android Auto and Apple Carplay, doesn't it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 133 ✭✭whizkid9

the base model doesnt seem to have an arm rest in the middle 😐️

Lovely car, had a look at it in Avon Motors Rathdrom, Co. Wicklow a couple of days ago - very impressed!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,580 ✭✭✭digitaldr

Both are wired. I wore out a few usb c sockets on a previous car with wired only.

it hasn’t been tested by Euro NCAP yet but I saw this Korean NCAP test on you tube 3 stars in that (Tested as the Casper in Korea) . Not sure if that test is equivalent or not.

Brian said in comments there when asked about v2l with a separately purchased adapter:

"V2L is not an option on the Irish market cars unfortunately.. I've tried it in these cars"

Very disappointing (and surprising to me) if that's indeed the case, that v2l isn't possible if you have the adapter... My understanding is that they typically all have the same hardware (like the Ioniq 5 would have been). Could be a software lock (or, they did in fact cut hardware costs on the Irish models, but I doubt they'd add this complexity / extra part option for manufacturing...). Though Hyundai dealers years ago said the same to me about the entry level spec Ioniq 5, that it wouldn't do v2l with a separately purchased adapter, despite that not being the case. Though at the moment they don't have a higher spec Inster to upsell to...

Has anybody with access to a Hyundai v2l adapter and an Inster here been able to try it yet themselves to verify independently?

Holding out a little bit of hope yet that Brian will turn out to be wrong and that it will work after all! We'll see.

yeah that was me who asked him. I’m hoping the same would be great if some with an Ioniq 5 or 6 could try it out.
dealers often tell you stuff that plain wrong.

Although Brian seems to be a cut above the Average salesperson 😂

No arm rest in base model in the front. Neither have one in the back as there wouldn't be room.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,550 ✭✭✭Ryath

It's in the manual. I wonder was the cut off set above the battery level? I'll be disappointed if it's not on Irish cars.

V2L was a good part of the reason I'm considering the Inster. Pretty much discounting any cars that don't have it. We were lucky we only lost power for 3 days in storm. Powercheck was saying another week when it came back, I had nearly spent 900 on a big powerstation that morning! I have a small one that will keep fibre broadband going for a day and I was moving it back and forth to keep my aquarium filter running every hour or so. Really all I want to be able to keep fridge, wifi and fishtank on. And be able to run well pump occasionally to refill attic tank.

Have test driven Inster going around in December and have had a look around showroom Elegance model twice. Still very impressed with it. While a very small car that moving rear bench and folding passenger seat give a lot of flexibility.

MG 4 is pretty much the next best option but considering if I'm better stretching to the Kona or EV3. Renault 5 is tempting me, did get to sit in one yesterday. Really realy like it. Rear space is better than I thought it would be but the boot is too small. Also test drive the MG 4 yesterday. Was very impressed with it. Very good performance and very good to drive. But slightly worried about long term reliability and build quality. The Koreans do seem a safer option long term and even if there was issues easier get it fixed. The current discount and finance on the MG is very tempting though. 0% finance over 5 year and and my trade in covering deposit on the MG make it low cost monthly option. With 4.9% hp over 3 years on the Inster I'll put in a nice chunk up front to keep monthlies and cost off credit down.

The Long range MG4 over the Inster 49 will make long trips much easier though. Inster not on a better route planner yet but comparing to Kona 48 on it. While the Inster should do a little better 210km to Dublin and back is just about in range for me. 460km Belfast is two long charges in the Kona but the MG4 according to ABRP is one 10 minute top up.

Intster is still tempting though with finance options it's €4.6k cheaper than the Excite MG4 and over 8k to the Exclusive. The Excite is missing a lot of features that the Inster does have though. Pretty much everything the Exclusive has over the Excite is standard on the Inster Elegance. MG4 Exclusive is what the heart wants but think the Inster is the sensible option. Money saved can pay for a good portable power station or invest in upgrading my Solar and adding battery storage.

That's what I was actually trying to say.

Feels planted but expectations have to be realistic.

I guess we're both in agreement then.
