would you pay Tesla more to have a car with EAP in Ireland though. I’m not sure it’s the sales tactic they think it is

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,886 ✭✭✭User1998

Personally no I wouldn’t, but I imagine they only needs to persuade a small amount of potential buyers. Because its not like they have massive amounts of used inventory going unsold. They usually only have small numbers don’t they?

in 2014 my boss bought a model S, and we all gathered around admiring it, and so many people said “oh wow, isn’t that the car that drives itself?”
it’s amazing what marketing can do

In 2014 the cars didn't drive themselves. In fact, the first (Mobil Eye) iteration of AP, referred to as AP1, was not released until October 2015.

    🙄

the point was that Tesla was known back then as the car that can drive itself.

And what marketing? I've never seen a Tesla ad

I wouldn’t pay much more but is certainly choose one with it rather than not. I had it in 3 cars and not in another. It’s a nice addition. Probably how basic AP should be. But not a €3800 addition!

Same here. My S had AP1 with highway autopilot and the X had EAP on AP2.5.

Having the 3 with constantly disengaging AP on the motorway when I move lanes took some getting used to but I wouldnt dream of paying 3.8k for the privelege. I'm too cheap, I could have 4 cars for that money.

That would have been some cost, they only launched RHD in mid 2014 and no presence in Ireland so would have been a UK import.

As others have said, "autosteer" not available until 2015 so noone could have been talking around a car in 2014 that could drive itself.

FYI, having had various autosteer Teslas, AP1 is by far the best

imported via Rotterdam iirc, they went there and drove it back.

I think it was a 75D. It may have been 2015, in my head I thought it was a 142 reg.

10years on, it still can’t “drive itself”, but it’s amazing how people who aren’t car people knew what it was at the time

AP1 is pretty decent on motorway, will adjust speed and pass other cars and has self parking and basis summon too. Won't make a turn or stop at lights etc but I found it great on long motorway runs

When was AP1 superseded by later versions?

Would a 182 Model S have it for example?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 19,825 Mod ✭✭✭✭slave1

AP1 software is not Tesla software so once they had their own team in place they stopped using it, from memory Tesla and Mobileye "fell out" around 2016 as Tesla were being too aggressive with their features and upcoming promises. I highly doubt a 2018 is on AP1

Imagine developing Autopilot for nigh on 10 years and it still be crap. I hate how easily AP disengages if i apply a slight amount of torque on the wheel to correct the driving line. I hate the constant disengagements to change lane. Then there's the phantom braking, mine went full emergency braking a few times for absolutely no reason, then there's the constant bing bongs.

I both love and hate my LR. Love the acceleration, matrix headlights, and space. Hate Autopilot, lack of parking sensors, lack of rain sensor

There are third party options to automatically re engage AP after charging lanes…S3XY

Have this myself and can vouch for its usefulness.

My passenger door got dinged by a driver that was parked adjacent to mine during school run today. Sentry caught him opening the door to the extremes of the camera and bounced back so definitely hit my door. I checked earlier, although hard to see it perpendicular to the door, it is noticeable around 10-15 degrees off the door surface from the side. Straight line down probably 1"-1.5" in length, no paint damage, just dent. It annoys me to no end, as only two days using Tesla for school run due to older regular 2nd car in the garage getting service for NCT.

Luckily I do have the reg of the car noted, he was driving off just I got back to the car park. So I have two questions as I am not familiar with the general process.

Do I make a report at the garda station so that I can get the contact details off them (??) as well as record for insurance claim against the driver (in the event they are not cooperative)? Obviously I will attempt to contact them if they want to work it outside of insurance.

Any recommendations for a dent repair you have used (in the Dublin area) and approximate cost?

It sounds very minor and also sounds like your camera footage isn’t 100% sure that their door hits yours, so while it’s annoying, the Gardai will definitely not give you the information.

It happened to me about 2 years ago - I spent €180 at a paintless dent removal place and it looked like new.

We all spend our lives parking in spots that are least lightly to get dings, but they’ll still happen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,272 ✭✭✭lau1247

While it is very minor, I agree but it did happen. I can say to myself it is tough luck if there is no sentry to capture it but this is not the case here. Can't see why I need to be out of pocket due to other people's carelessness.

If garda can't give me the information, can I still request a pulse number, file the report and submit a claim against their insurance since I have the car reg.

180 might be relatively small, but if I have to fix it every time someone dinged it, it will all add up, you know?

Who did you use to repair?

Sadly this s**t happens all the time. In some ways you’re lucky it’s only a dent. PDR might not cost that much to sirt especially if it’s a cash job.

I used dentMagic in Dublin - just search paintless dent removal on google maps and nearly any of them would do it.

I could see my dented door from across the carpark, it was that deep, and on a crease of the door metal too - and when done I genuinely couldn’t even find where the dent was originally.

Unfortunately it’s one of those times to pay and move on.

    Report to Garda station.
They will contact the driver and give them your details to contact you.

If they don’t then you go through your insurance. Your insurance will chase them through their reg.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,732 ✭✭✭✭josip

But according to previous posters your insurance might still register it as an incident you were involved in and your insurance loading increase in future years

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,001 ✭✭✭sk8board

    reporting a very

”hard to see it perpendicular to the door, it is noticeable around 10-15 degrees off the door surface from the side.”

Door dings are incredibly annoying - but they’re rarely worth insurance claims and wasting police time - and if I understand the OP correctly, the camera footage is not 100% conclusive, so it’s a nonstarter.

it’s a €50k car - be thankful there’s no paint to repair, call a PDR, pay the €150-200, it’ll be perfect again, move on.

Depends how much you value your time. It will probably take a few hours worth of Garda station visits, phone calls, insurance assessors, visiting the bodyshop etc.

If it’s visible on the camera then I’d probably try make the other driver or their insurance company pay for the damage. But its ultimately your decision.

It's likely you'll see him again at the same location if you keep an eye out. A polite conversation might resolve this. Only do this if you're comfortable in these scenario's. Sometimes the direct approach is best and cuts out all the hassle. You've nothing to loose once you keep in mind that he might to tell you to get lost. The other option is that he'll engage with you. Have the footage on your phone so if he's cooperative you can show him before going to car. Nothing ventured, nothing gained

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,001 ✭✭✭sk8board

you’ll have a reported claim on your policy, even though it’s not your liability, but it matters that you’ve been associated with a claim - for €200. It’s probably less than the excess on either insurance policy.

This is bizarre lads. Pay the money to get it fixed (or don’t) and move on.

This very same thing happened to me. Caught on Sentry, went to local Garda station, they knew the person. Sorted easily and they paid for the repair without any claim on insurance. If you have the footage, get the careless fecker to pay for it imo. They'll take more care in the future.
