Ryanair have really ramped up charging people for bags that "don't fit"

I don't know. But aggressive nitpicking and effectively saying to people pay up or you don't get your flight sounds the worst of the worst. Would love to hear this highlighted on Liveline as a starting point.

Don’t fly them or put a bag in the hold. When I fly Ryanair I price in all the extras and shop around.

Sometimes they are more expensive than the competition - even to the extent I got a indirect business flight cheaper than a Ryanair flight where I will have fast track, lounge access and a glass of champagnes

Yeah when you factor in the extras there is often very little difference between them and Aer Lingus. It's just that Ryanair have more destinations.

Many passengers take the p1ss. I often look at passengers in front of me in the queue and think " you'll be very lucky not to be charged extra with the size of your bag". So many chancers around. I remember one person arguing after they were busted saying "they've always used that bag for years and never been stopped." They were too stupid to realise how lucky they were until this point.

I wonder how often do people overpack and not actually use/wear what they bring. Maybe we need to get better at packing and planning.

A weight limit would be a better way to assess the situation as it's more black and white than whether a bag fits into a certain space, which leaves more room to query.

The checked in bag and price it in is a good way to avoid the nonsense.

On a couple of recent trips someone else did the booking and included a check in bag.

No worries about bag sizing, no dragging the bag up and down the dodgy steps, no searching for overhead space and weightlifting.

Just relax, stroll on and put your small shoulder bag under the seat.

I remember rocking up to the Aerlingus check in desk in Manchester in the early 90s with a bicycle. No problem at all. But my flights were £225 punt return usually and more expensive at christmas.

If they're clamping down on the carry-on bags, are they also clamping down on where those carry-ons go when on the plane? Flown several times last year and more and more are filling the overheads with carry-ons leaving no room for the paid onboard baggage. I get that there's no legroom, but pay for your overhead space if that's the issue.

Last time there was no room over my seat or near it and had to put my case in the overhead several seats behind which is a disaster when it comes to disembarking the plane.

No bags at all? Thought there are bags included in flights? Under seat for Ryanair and 10kg bag free on Aer Lingus if put in hold.

  • Site Banned Posts: 12,921 ✭✭✭✭suvigirl

Right so, not the same flight then? As the Aer Lingus flight has 10kg bag included, the Ryanair does not.

  • Site Banned Posts: 12,921 ✭✭✭✭suvigirl

The point is, it is not the same flight.

I regularly travel Ryanair with under seat bag. There is no chance of getting 10 kg in a bag of that size.

If you want to compare then you have to use the priority flight price for Ryanair, including the 10 kg bag.

    Nothing pedantic about it

Well I could put 10 kg dumbbells in also, but that's just nonsense.

A bigger bag with more capacity, is free an Aer Lingus. You should compare that price to the priority flight with Ryanair.

  • Site Banned Posts: 12,921 ✭✭✭✭suvigirl

You still have to compare like with like in order to get the 'real' prices.

I'm flying to Italy in a few weeks, with Ryanair, but I'm coming home with Aer Lingus. Because they were the cheapest flights!

What do you mean you've no flexability?! If you dont want to bring the bigger bag on Aer Lingus, you just dont bring it.

Its free in that you dont need to add it as an extra in the same way as Ryanair make you, so i dont know what the price comparison is for?

But you have already said Ryanair arent always the cheapest flight so your point makes no sense. Its "free" in that you dont pay extra for it like you do with Ryanair which we have already established arent always the cheapest of the two. Your argument still makes no sense.

Absolutely. And yet people will still argue with this post, I'm heading to Tenerife in a, few week, 2 adults, 2 children not even 800e for us, nearly 1900e with aer lingus, but hey, you get a "free" 10kg with Al. 😂

Just an aside and for once not baggage related. I got an AL flight recently and with checked bags it was 50 quid cheaper than Ryanair on the same day. I was just lucky I suppose. Anyway I thought to myself this'll be great, no five mile walk to the Ryanair Gates, and the new scanners in T2 aswell, oh I couldn't wait lol, since it was about 10 years since I used AL or T2 either.

So, checked in at the self service, grand. Went through security, grand again, I had to take out the liquids, but I knew that. Didn't have to take out electronics anymore. Lovely new scanners… Grand.

Folks, the journey to the gate involved going halfway over to T1, all around the houses, and THEN had to get an effin BUS. To another gate somewhere in the bowels of the airport. All there was was a tiny coffee shop with hardly anything to eat that wasn't in a curled up state. I'd have been to the Ryanair gates quicker.

Other than that it was fine. 😊

They are often cheaper but not always, you've already said this. In your example you're not comparing like for like. I just did a search for GC flights on March 11th, 1ish euro in the difference. But you did have to add your bad on Ryanair.

Im not bashing Ryanair, I have no issue with Ryanair and I do think people are their own downfall when it comes to Ryanair but you are coming accross as Fanboying them and wont hear anything against it and being rude in the delivery.

In the last 18 months, I have flown Nice, Paris, London, Manchester, Liverpool, Rome, Milan, Faro x2, Amsterdam x 2 and Ryanair were only the cheaper option on the London flights. So while Ryanair have revolutionised air travel its not always the cheaper. Your experience is not the only one.

I found they don’t seem to go after priority bookings unless taking the…. As later on is easier to target. I’ve seen onboard someone get asked who owns this bag and it was a soft bag and owner said they had priority but wasn’t asked for it. Wanted them to put it under the seat. I use a bag where the wheels are tucked in bar a few mms for ground clearance. Strange they pull soft bags as soft can flop out due to lack of items in it

Can I make a small suggestion.

If you are booking a flight and want a check in bag check both the FR and AL prices.

Then decide which suits you best

I don't get the obsession with carry on luggage. It's a pain in the ar$e. You're lugging it around airside etc, the whole stowing it overhead and unloading holds up the plane on both take off and landing.

I generally always check my bags (unless its a one day work trip and I just have a laptop bag or something). There's never a long wait for it to hit the carousel either. Less stress and a better way to manage luggage overall

"Never" might be taking a bit of poetic licence. Usually there is not a long wait, but there can be sometimes if a lot of flights come in together

They already do. My parents bought ryanair bags years ago, samsonite bags in ryanair colours

Because people want to pay as little costs as possible and squeeze as much extra weight as they can into their carry on bags and get away with it, and then moan and whinge online when they get reprimanded, all the while forgetting that the airline they travel on is a business, not a charity.

Steep enough price. I got a return ticket to Malaga a few months ago for less than half of what those bags cost. If your flying regularly I suppose it's worth it to save any hassle.

Flying within Europe where you don't need to go through passport control, then checking in a bag costs a lot of time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,610 ✭✭✭mulbot

Where do you not have to go through passport control?

If you are on a business trip and time is tight checking in a bag can be an issue.

Not so much on a leisure trip where you are supposed to be more relaxed.

Next year theyll probably scrape a few centimeters off the max size to catch people out. Michael just loves changing bits of rules surreptitiously to make an eejit out of people and bag a few quid for himself
