Electric Pumps

Not electric bikes or even electronic groupsets but rechargable pumps for inflating tyres. Ever since dwelling too long looking at one on Facebook, I've been bombarded with ads from at least six different manufacturers. Most claim to be able to get to 100psi with 700x25 tyres in under two minutes and to do this two or three times before needing recharging. On Paris2Nice this year we had a puncturefest on the bikepaths leaving Paris and a couple of guys who had electric pumps were in great demand. Anyone else have experience of them? They seem to range in price from around €60-140!

The Cycplus cube is deadly, I’ve had one for a year or so and ditched co2 canisters completely, although I still carry an emergency pump just in case. Have gotten two inflations out of back to back from flat for 32mm at 60psi

I've been watching these online for awhile now, and I keep threatening to get one.

As regards experience of them, I was cycling with a group on the Gravel Grind West this year, and I had 6 punctures (well, it was the same puncture 6 times, but that's a different story.)

One of the guys had an electric pump, and to be honest, it was a game changer. They're loud, but I think I would have lost the will to live if I had to reinflate my tyre 6 times with a hand pump.

Full disclosure, I was running 700x40 Panaracer Gravelking SK's, so no idea what they'd be like on 32's or 28's

It's definitely on my list, though

Really? Given the form factor, and the job they're doing? Remember, those numbers are for 100psi. I did 6 inflation's to about 35 psi, and there was still battery left

I was looking at the mucoff one but saw on some of the Facebook comments that it looks the same as a Chinese alternative that costs about 20% of the price.

I might chance that one if I remember what it was called, just to see what it is like. I think the main issue is that it isn't something you use every ride so remember to keep charged (like lights & GPS etc). I'm sure I'd pull it out of the saddle bag and battery would be empty. But might be useful for a multi day trip etc.

I'm considering a Silca frame pump on the new gravel bike

I'm just wondering where the waste comes in? Do you mean a waste of time? Or money?

Great idea, yes. But also carry a hand pump for when the battery pump fails.

What pump do you carry? Pumps are up there with lights for me in terms of the variety only matched by crapness of half of them. I'd say one-in-two people on club spins who use pumps end up faffing around for ages trying to either get the connection right or to actually inflate the tube. I'm firmly in the CO2 camp. But would love a pump that could be relied on to do the job every time with zero faff and minimal huffing and puffing. Maybe I'm just too soft and fussy 😁

I've considered the smaller ones as I have the one below. which I've found excellect. I've found it really handy for travel, and for packing for races. It's a bit heavy to bring on the bike is my only complaint.

I tried to get that lifeline one (on your recommendation on here Weepsie) and couldn't find it - and that was before the CRC/ Wiggle demise. Can only say I only charged the big one a couple of times iirc.

I carry this one in my small backpack while commuting. It’s a bit too big to carry in a jersey pocket on a club spin but I have seen people carry it in their jersey pocket.

Mini frame pump makes a lot of sense. Can be very discreet.

I had a BBB mini pump and it was beyond useless. Not saying all their pumps are (in fact I'd bed my house that they have some excellent ones), I'm just never buying a pump again unless I see it in action and vouched for by its user. I've wasted so much money over the years on middle of the road cycling accessories that turned out to be as useful as a chocolate teapot that I'm done with it now. Unfortunately I don't have the money to go buying top end stuff willy nilly either in the hope that price = quality.

Edit: just to confirm, I'm very cranky this morning 😁

Recommend the Silca frame pump. Blasts air into the tyre. Easy to use. Looks good and they have regular sales and discounts.

Getting back to electric pumps, Santa (well actually son #2) presented me with an Aliexpress sourced Topump TB2 for Christmas. It seems identical to the Flextail Tiny Bike Pump Pro but cheaper at €47 plus shipping. On a solo spin out to Kilcock and Celbridge a few days earlier, I got 3 punctures and could have done with it. Since then, I stopped last Tuesday to help a few cyclists in Kilbride who were struggling with a mini-pump and the Topump worked really well. Seems like there was plenty of charge left in it when I got home too.

Santa (my wife) also left me an electric pump. In my case the Cycoplus AS 2.

It's tiny, it fits easily in pockets, top tube bag etc.

I haven't had a real reason to use it yet, so I let some air out of the front tyre and pumped it back up again. Very happy camper here 😃

Meh. Electric pumps is just another gimmick to make equipment junkies part with their money. A solution to a problem that doesn't exist. A proper good old-fashioned hand pump with an unlimited 'battery' capacity FTW.

I brought the cyclami version the A2S - it works as a pump anyway, but I'm a bit skeptical of the psi reading but haven't had the chance to properly test yet. Even if that aspect doesn't work, that's no different from CO2 anyway.

Mine arrived today. Power button doesn't inspire confidence in it lasting but hopefully I get some use out of it down the road. Got it for 38 euro in the sales.

In my experience that was great until it wasn't. You need to mount on top tube; I had mounted on the downtube where it sat unused for months in all weather and covered in all type of sh1te. When I needed it (in the middle of the roundabout the bottom of Maryborough Hill, Douglas in a downpour in the dark close to the end of a110km weekend commute) it didn't work. It was the decent quality Lezyne linked above

I'm still on external cable 7800 shifters, rim brakes, steel frame, tubed tyres, no CO2 etc etc. I'd agree with you with regard to most cycling changes like internal routing, press fit BB etc etc but mini electric pumps used in the wild are the job.

Just going to buy the cycplus, AS2 pro looks like the best option; €81 with Mantel.

    Any other contenders?

What happened your mini pump - it seized/corroded? Mine is working great, 10-odd years now on the seat tube on the other side of the derailleur.

I got a cheapo China one, <€20. It worked great, right up to 65 psi, then stopped, though I had it set for 80 psi.

    Has anyone else experienced this?

Pumped 4 flat tyres this weekend on bikes in my shed, 2 to 60 psi and 2 to 40 psi and battery went from 3 bars to 1 bar left.

Used the "TINY BIKE PUMP PRO-120 PSI High Pressure and LED Display Electric Bike Pump" - got it for €70

Assuming this would work in the upper pressure ranges too? 80-100psi etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,575 ✭✭✭jamesd

Yes i did my winter bike to 90 , did 3 tyres to 90 when testing it.

I've had this one for a few months now. Haven't needed to use it a whole heap, but when I have it has been super. I've done 3 tyres from 0 to 80psi and there was still some juice left. The light is also handy in the dark

I got this one and so far it's been absolutely perfect. No issue getting to 5 or 6 bar either.

So far so good. Now thankfully i've not had much cause to use it road side but i've done so at home swapping wheels and tyres and what not. No issue so far, feels like it'll last but time will tell
