The club announced a new signing, I pointed out how risky this approach is.

Nobody even disagrees with it, they just don't like hearing it.

Only started listening to TOTD a year or so ago. I enjoy them, even went to see them live in Dublin but I sometimes wish they filled the podcast with a bit more insight. A bit too self-indulgent at times.

And let you keep slandering my dear sweer Ruben Amorim😍, no thanks 😂

    Yes.

One was a manager who had a contractual veto abd, by his own words, demanded control of transfers.

The other is specifically head coach, not manager.

So yes, I will consider wilcox, vivel and berrada have decided on the targets in agreement with amorim on the team requirements.

Literally myself, Mitch and another have said we're not overly excited about it or worried about it.

Obviously it's risky but I'm not sure if it's any more risky than buying say a Zinchenko/Tierney/Chillwell etc. The money doesn't seem to be there to buy an established elite player so it's either buy young with potential or older known quantities that you're likely trying to offload again in a couple of seasons. I'd rather take the risk on the younger player if that's the choice, assuming the scouting has been thorough.

I'm no fan of the Dorgu transfer (shocker I know) but I'd have him over those 3 all day long.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,211 ✭✭✭✭bucketybuck

As I said, I would have much less problem with the signing if it was in tandem with a loan signing for the position as well. Hedge the risk by having an experienced pro that can slot in to give Dorgu a break if it looks like he needs it, to take the pressure of the kid instead of having it be so absolutely vital that he performs in every game.

Its a point I have made before, where are the loan signings? Surely there are some options out there that would get us through this interim period before the manager gets who he really wants?

That's a fair comment. Maybe the thinking is Shaw will be back soon as an option until the summer at least and can help rotate with Dorgu along with Dalot and Malacia.

Far from ideal because Shaw can't be relied upon, Dalot's not a left back / left wing back and Malacia doesn't look to be good enough.

I can only assume the money isn't there either to take on anyone's else's wages unless some other players leave. Also if it's a case of 2 wing backs or 1 wing back and a striker I'd go with the latter.

In other news, Gore and Amass to be loaned out, 2 promising players but Gore should have been knocking on the 1st team door by now, Amass has a few years ahead of him but with Dorgu and the muscley Paraguyan lad Leon coming in he should prob be sold in the summer with the usual buy back/sale percentage.

There was talk earlier in the week to the effect to that if a left back was signed,Malacia would be going out on loan…..hope that’s not the case as we can’t depend on Shaw to be available for any length of time.

As others have said……Dorgu is a signing for the future who can hopefully settle in reasonably quickly.

He can play in several different roles which would make him attractive to the scouting group and Amorim.

We've really been beat down haven't we!?

We've made a signing and we're really struggling (myself included) to muster some excitement for it. Who could blame us after all the duds we've signed lately.

This guy could be Evra mark II, here's hoping anyway. At the very least he'll add physicality and pace down the left which we've been crying out for.

Tactically and structurally it should make a big difference even without him playing any more than competently.

Let's just hope he's nothing like AWB.

Yeah he's a decent journalist and as I said I listened and enjoyed for years but to act like everything he says is fact and that he is above reactive content or self preservation is just wrong imo.

Fan podcasts by their nature are going to be a bit of a circle jerk. I wouldn't really listen to them as it's better with something like Second Captains or Football Weekly where there's a semblance of objectivity.

As for why my comment was jumped on, a former United manager once said, if I speak I am in trouble.

The rest of the season will be a big one for Dalot, Amad will be pushed to the AM role so he'll be the RWB, no excuses on his favoured side.

Evra was an adult when he joined United. Right now they're signing U21 players and expecting them to be at the level required. Now at Dorgu's age and position it may mitigate a lot of the issues as having him run himself up and down the wing could bring a lot of positives without him having to be the smartest or most experienced player. Hopefully anyway.

Season 2 of Black Ops 6 just dropped so we won't see Shaw for another month at least.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

Good vid alright, seems he draws a lot of fouls, can't wait for the really great EPL refs to call them....

What do we think of links to Matias Tel now that he's available? Looks a great talent but again we already have 2 young strikers ..is 3 overkill in the absence of an experienced ST

Agree about Mitten. His football knowledge is extremely limited - when he's pinned down and asked something specific he usually goes on a ramble and reverts back to generalities and cliches. Rarely if ever generates an insightful opinion of his own. He also has an awful habit of name dropping!

And given all the access he clearly has, he doesn't seem to be able to use it very well because journalists like Whitwell get much better stories. Mitten is sort of like a journalistic embodiment of a stereotypical barstool fan. I suppose there's a market for it but he wouldn't be for me.

Was going to post the same. Seems to tick a lot of boxes. Bit more excited to be going over to see United in February now!

Good video once I got over him claiming our Liverpool win-draw. It's very rare that these videos aren't cause for excitement though.

I would have preferred a less risky / more proven (without being over the hill or a crock) player but it doesn't seem we have the money for that. I've been crying out for an attacking full back for years now so I guess I'll have to try to get excited at least.

I hope I'm wrong. . But If dorgu nails down LWB, I bet dalot somehow still manages to play every minute of every game like he always does.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 17,267 ✭✭✭✭Nalz

Dalot has flaws no doubt, but he reminds me of Wes Browne. Will always give a 7/10 minimum but has a horrible mistake in him every second game.

Mazraoui isn't that much better imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,940 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

If Dalot plays, its cause he is the best option for whatever role. Based on fitness, form, opposition etc.

If Dalot plays, its cause we don't have a better option, for various reasons

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,782 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

He'll be first choice RWB, Amad will be pushed up.

Mitten is a storyteller,.who seems to have a great interest in all things football, likes to dig into the history of football and the more romantic side of it, I think he said recently his next article will be about the history of the team we face next in the Europa league. The man is clearly very knowledgeable and has a great memory to top it all off, I find him very interesting and you get stuff from him you'd never hear from any other mainstream (that I follow) football media person, i think he brings a good balance to the podcast and while the podcast as a whole doesn't have much in depth football analysis, that side of thing fall on carl anka who I don't think is great for the person who is meant to bring that side of thing to the podcast. There are loads of places you can go for tactical stuff these days but TOTD devils has a really good vibe to it and the lads do have more inside info that any other podcast too. By far my favorite united pod at the moment.

If Dorgu fits in well, my first choice (going offensive) selection would be

    Onana
    Mazraoui, Maguire, Martinez,
    Amad, Ugarte, Mainoo, Dorgu
    Bruno, Garnacho
    Zirkzee.

I expect it will be Amad for Garnacho and Dalot on the right, MDL in for Mazraoui

    Screenshot_2025-01-29-09-18-02-155_com.reddit.frontpage.png

Something I found today. Seems to be from OTB as below. Interesting with all of the managers having a problem with him that Mitten wouldn't have aluded to even one instance of not being professional

    https://www.offtheball.com/soccer/rashford-has-got-everything-andy-mitten-1124597

Was also interested when I listened to the time stamped part of the above that David Ornstein actually provided a balanced view of the situation and called it "a mess" while turning Scholes in circles about how long it's been since Rashford has performed. Wasn't mentioned in the posts here about the same interview.

Debated posting this as I know how it goes but sure…

i'd be 100% happy to sell dalot if his sale was used to finance a regular starter.

i've mentioned previously that selling him is the same as selling an academy player for FFP, i think he is at his ceiling and is just alright at everything.

his injury record is good though, but yeah - happy to see him sold.
