If that's the case then it may have been a smart move on behalf of the Air Force to highlight the stupidity of Trump's EO and just how clumsy his "thought" processes are. It's indicative of what may have to be done to circumvent his mindless approach to governing.

Government officials doing what their elected superiors tell them to do is democracy, not facism.

I'm not changing my argument at all. You mentioned tariffs and I said I believe he'll apply them to the EU at large. He hates the EU because he perceives them to be ripping off the US on trade and he's said it numerous times - look it up. The odds of some kind of economic trade war between the US and EU are high.

Aside from that, I believe there's a reasonable chance he'll ask US multinationals to weaken their presence in Ireland and relocate to the US. Our outspokenness on Israel won't do us any favours with the current US administration.

Doesn't matter, no multi national with a long standing physical presence in Ireland, or Europe, is not going to permanently move back to the US for the sake of three years

Their job is to copy/paste the latest talking points from the Reichspropagandaministerium, not engage in any kind of reasoned debate.

So what they'll do is espouse that Der Führer is victorious over the Evil Left, communists, those gays, trans people, the rest of the world and how he's winning everything in the world, whilst saying "What Trump Really Meant When He Said That...", or the schoolyard bully favourite "ah c'mon, it was just a joke".

This is no different to North Korean propaganda.

I never thought I'd see fascism in the western world in my lifetime, but here we are. Consider carefully what side of history you want to be on.

Because I (and hopefully others) will remember and keep that in mind for any future interactions.

For the sake of 3 years? The next 8 years are likely to be MAGA and possibly beyond that. Imo they are going to do all they can to rig future elections and it's not clear what the democrats can do about it.

Fascism doesn't necessarily not have elections, a militant and nationalistic society can put a fascist leader in place. (Which looks to be what we're seeing here)

I mean look at the Merriam Webster definition, are you saying none of that sounds familiar?

Fascism : a populist political philosophy, movement, or regime (such as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual, that is associated with a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, and that is characterized by severe economic and social regimentation and by forcible suppression of opposition

I could use the exact same logic to defend the Third Reich.

Mussolini, the first fascist, once said "Fascism should more appropriately be called Corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power."

Given the fact that Trump now has all of the tech billionaires and people like Bezos licking his arse, that's becoming more and more apparent.

He threatened it the last time with multinationals and it didn't happen and it won't happen this time.

Those multinationals have over 20 years of history in Ireland and will continue. Not one company closed down and left Ireland the last time.

If anyone actually wants a deep dive on the definition of the topic, I recommend the paperback version of this book:

Kindle version is an abomination. Paxton only stated that Trump is a fascist after the coup attempt of January 6th, 2021.

I hate to break it to you, but there's gonna be a lot of things that Trump will do this term that he threatened and failed to carry out in his previous term. In case you haven't noticed, he has far more authority and power now.

Which arse were they licking before, Tony? Was that facism?

Not all things are equal. MAGA will almost certainly push through policies to strip women of rights or rename Greenland to Americaland or whatever but one thing they've always been consistent on is the worship or corporate power and greed. Trump might be wildly changeable but there are a few things, like China and trade, that he has been consistent on.

So do you think we're safe from Trump's tantrums?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,572 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

That's a pretty big assumption, Trump is unlikely to legally be allowed to run for a third term so they're gonna lose a figurehead in 4 years. Also he has 4 years to repeat a mess so MAGA isn't necessarily gonna be viewed positively at the end of 4 years.

We'll see just how much Trump and his clowns **** things up over the next 4 long years. By the end maybe people will have finally copped onto these bozos and eliminate them from the body politic altogether. They're nothing but a toxic blight.

Nobody really knows at the moment. We are probably overthinking things at the moment though in relation to Ireland : Trump is issuing threats left, right and centre to the likes of Canada, Mexico, Denmark, Colombia and many others. He probably has no particular beef with Ireland and I doubt he gives a toss what our relations are like with Israel (contrary to what right wing clowns / grifters like Ian O'Doherty think).

He would be far more interested in Ireland purely from the business angle and whether we are good or bad for US trade.

Even still, there's money to be made by corporations by having a european presence, as someone else mentioned, Europe is the only real bloc that has significant enough wealth to buy a lot of the luxury goods that the US makes, but more importantly, there is massive legislation around how software (which is where the big names are really focused other than pharma) can process data in geographical regions. They can't move data from european customers to US data centers to process and then return that data back, it breaches a whole rake of EU laws.

The data needs to be processed in Europe, which means the companies need a presence in europe, and ultimately if they want a cash injection outside of the states, they will want to keep one of the largest blocs able to spend money on these pieces of software.

Trump has a lot of the big silicon valley types appearing to kowtow to him, but the reality is they do that to protect their own interests. Removing a european presence drastically impacts their bottom lines, and will not happen.

Mr. Bone Spurs signs an EO targeting transgender soldiers. 15,000 of them currently serving and with more balls then he ever had.

I'm guessing we'll get a mix of posters saying it's not transphobic or outright praising it. Don't think any of his fans have had the guts to comment in his West Bank comments in thread yet.

Honestly though his policies ATM are seeming like that of a schoolyard bully who never grew up. The claim of the grown ups being in charge and him not being a warmonger have turned out to be false and just 8 days in.

Our economy not getting battered by Trump doing something which affects the status of US multinationals in Ireland.

I somewhat suspect that the extent of Donnie's knowledge about Ireland is limited to him having a Golf Club here.

I still remember last time when he suggested that Building a Wall™ would be a solution to the Northern Ireland / Brexit problem. He's that feckless when it comes to Ireland.

I see. There's no guarantee of that but I think it's unlikely. He's not going to want to aggravate the large corporations. There might be some economic pain but they're in Ireland because it's profitable, not because they're nice. That said, I do think that Ireland needs to phase out the corporation tax nonsense. It's not a good look in an age of rising living costs and it's making us look like we've nothing else to offer.

Ultimately, anything Trump does to Europe justifies offensive actions the EU can, and will, take. They've done this before in Trump's original term.

It's a masterclass in propaganda. Convincing his base that immigrants and transgender people are the enemy when the real enemy of the people is sitting in the White House laughing at them.
