Booting an M1-M3 mac from an external ssd

    Hello,

I'm waiting for the new mac mini M4 to arrive. My plan is to get the smallest internal drive and attach a large (1TB) thunderbolt SSD.

I'm hoping to put everything on this drive and boot from it as my main drive. I have seen conflicting views online on how to do this on a silicon mac. Has anyone with an M1-M3 mac done this successfully? As an alternative, would it be possible to use the internal drive just to boot from, and have everything else on the external SSD?
