I'm such a big fan of his his.

Probably my favorite manager since Ferguson left.

He really doesn’t like them does he? He’s such a United fan already 😂

Didn't get to see the match due to power being down but got MOTD2, Maroc Silva seemed very adamant that Fulham were the much better team. An unconvincing 3 points so?

There were calls for Martinez to be dropped early on in Amorim's tenure. Martinez was certainly off form but calls to see him dropped were way OTT imo. We badly lack leadership on the pitch and he is a rare leader in the team. His distribution seems to play a key role in Amorim's system as well.

I'm still not sure how he is allowed or continues to do the idiotic two footed jump. It's only a matter of time before that goes wrong and he does some serious damage / gets a lengthy suspension.

But with 2 goals and 2 assists (all four contributions being very important).... Is he third only to Bruno and Amad in terms of attacking contributions since Amorim arrived? I'm not sure if anyone else in the squad betters that… It would be fairly daming (but not surprising) if a CB is up there ahead of our other attacking players.

Having been a backer of Hojlund for a long time (a backer... but he should never have been our first choice striker), the lad really looks like he has lost all confidence and it doesn't look like he is going to play himself out of it anytime soon. It's a hard watch. It seemed as if ETH was trying to turn him into the next Durcan Ferguson but we're still trying to play him as a target man with Amorim... And he's just not good at it at all.

I know it's easy to jump on these players, but watching the video he was smiling when he said this. It could just as easily been said as a joke by some players in good humour and taken that way by the coach.

Another thing on this is that you can see the ball is clearly well in motion in the frame above, the lines could well be drawn a frame before that and it might look completely different. Not saying this call is right or wrong, but it's a flawed system. I think when they need to zoom in on such a poor quality image, drawing manual lines they should just befit the attacker. Or they should have three people independently stop the video and do lines and take a majority or something.

There were plenty of examples of Hojlund's poor hold up play on MOTD2 last night. I would say that the still images above are unfair and not needed to demonstrate that poor play. There were way better examples of it last night.

When a ball is launched, the striker isn't going to be following the ball the whole time. The CB's positioning is going to tell the striker where the ball is going.

Some players never look at the ball (hello Nunez) and just barge into the CB with intent. It seems that from that image, Hojlund obviously looked towards the ball at some stage and tried to contest it fairly.

Problem is that he doesn't seem to be any good at that type of play. Zirkzee is better at it but I wouldn't say it's a strength of his either. The main question I would ask is why are we trying to play that way… it's a disappointment of mine in Amorim that we can't seem to play the ball out through the channels and instead are opting for this long ball way too often.

I think it was Scholes and another commentator who were suggesting Mainoo in one of the 10 positions to see if that would help us be able to play out and retain the ball a bit higher up the field. It would be worth a shot imo, the Southampton game was an absolute disaster, I'm not sure how bad we were at playing out yesterday but some solution needs to be found. Lumping balls up to Hojlund or Zirkzee isn't going to work.

I really hope that we're working on more than just Dorgu. We so badly need a striker who can offer more than Hojlund & Zirkzee. I'm not ruling either of them out just yet, although they both aren't even showing much of a spark at the minute. But we need someone who can take a bit of the goal scoring pressure off them. It would help for both of them to be coming on with half an hour left and us a goal or 2 up and cruising, rather than coming on under pressure to get the winner or equaliser.

IMO you need the defensive line slgihtly higher and you need attacking threats on either wing at the WB positions pushing forward.

The defenders should be playing it out wide, or dropping it in to the midfield pair who bump it wide.

The conservative nature of the wing backs, because they are commonly fullbacks, and our line height is causing the passing lanes needed to not exist, so we resort to playing it long towards the 10s or striker.

We dont cause the offensive overloads needed to retain and maintain possession in the front line.

We arguably also need to tweak the initial build out positions as Maguire is commonly staying central, and gets marked off - meaning he isn't an option but that also means the ball into a CM likely blocked off too.

If we changed to Maguire pulling wider and Onana pushing a bit forward then it likely results in the CM being more on and a the wide defenders and wing backs causing marking problems for the opposition - and this is something Amorim already did at Sporting for this reason (which is the only reason I know to mention it)

how marginally is marginally, to you?

Like that would need to be defined and then it becomes the new law, you can be XX cms offside, and be onside

the issue is, the margin then moves and we have the same conversation

On the Amad one, I thought in real time there was an offside, and that was shown to be correct. I don't mind VAR for factual calls, and that is offside.

just to say, I do think the law was not written with such small disatnces in mind, obviously the technology didn't exist. But in times past you definitely had linos flagging in such circumstances and being called great for seeing it.

Or missing less marginal calls and being called incompetent

Sorry for spamming, but in the picture above, I think Blue can certainly be adjudged to be offside, the player is clearly more advanced than White, even if you take something like "centre of mass" as a marker for offside

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,941 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

My issue is he is clearly more advanced by about 1cm of his knee.

Offside is offside... But that just feels rubbish. How to 'correct' for it I don't know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,837 ✭✭✭Hodors Appletart

yeah I agree with you, but in this instance offside is offside, to correct for it you need to redefine offside and leave nothing open to interpretation.

Do you not get what I'm saying about the player being clearly more advanced to the "naked eye" given the relative body positions. Can you not see what I'm saying there? To my eye, even without the line or 1cm of the knee, Blue is fairly obviously (to me) in a more advanced position than White.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,837 ✭✭✭Hodors Appletart

I 100% agree that calling it offside when it's a matter of centimetres, when to all intents and purposes the players are level, is nonsense, especially as they never zoom in on the player kicking the pass to see what frame the foot contacts the ball, they never draw lines for that.

this lad has never played left back is the only issue, so this could just be them signing a cheap backup RB?

with the offside's have they stopped showing the drop down line for the attacking player?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,226 ✭✭✭✭DrPhilG

Ahh, that'll teach me to skim read from sh*tty websites.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56,089 ✭✭✭✭Headshot

Doesn't look good for any new players coming in this window

    Anyone still confident?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,305 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

All makes sense but what doesn't make sense is… why aren't we seeing it! The only thing I can think of is that with Maguire being very good of late, that Amorim may feel he has to play him (and doesn't really want to play him wide), but that by playing him, he knows that he's compromising the ability to play out / play higher etc.

On not having players for wing backs. While it might not be ideal at all, I would class Dalot and Maz as fairly attacking full backs, I can't see a reason why both shouldn't be able to get further up the pitch. I keep going back to the Southampton game as it highlighted all that was wrong, but from that game, it didn't look like they were instructed to push on / there was ample time in the first half for a manager to get them to push up and it never happened.

I think Amorim has been a breath of fresh air but it's time to start seeing some improvements / solutions at this stage.

they have in fairness, and it should be up to the manager to decide if they require a day off.

just the fact this is the players asking demonstrates to me they are not 100% committed, or something they have asked and were granted in the past.

any of this talk in the dressing should have been shut down by bruno.

maybe it was a joke as SteM has mentioned above.

I thought it was a joke based on it being his birthday, he does mention it's the players who didnt play.

“We work because it’s my birthday and my gift is to work with the guys who didn’t play. It will be fantastic because we won!”.“Then I will have dinner with my kids”.

And Rashford was back on the bench for the Newcastle game. That was his "in", from there all he had to do was shut up, work hard in training, sit on the bench for a few games and he would now likely be playing again.

Even if the club was still looking to sell and he still wanted to leave, the player should still be professional and work to get into the team while he is still at the club.

Like, Amorim is there about 10 minutes, its the easiest thing in the world to go into his office, apologise, say that you are going to work hard and do what is asked going forward. I have no doubt Amorim would respect that.

But it requires putting the ego to one side for a few minutes, and I guess that was too much to ask.

i was very close to posting the same thing! was burned in the past though so double checked him on transfermarkt.

romano has turned into more of a content creator (with associated clickbait) than journalist in recent years. he is still useful as an aggregator and gets the occasional scoop.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,941 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

I get what you are saying… but I don't understand how when the reality is that he was offside by 1cm (the absolute tip of his knee is offside) you can say he is clearly more advanced. Like if you move him back by 1cm is he then clearly onside by your same interpreation of body angle etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,226 ✭✭✭✭DrPhilG

I do think Dorgu will arrive. And if we are to have any chance of the FA Cup or Europa, we need to bring in a competent goalscorer. As far as the league goes, we're cooked. We won't be relegated, we won't hit European places. If we were already out of the cups I could understand INEOS keeping the powder dry. The squad we currently have will be sufficient to limp over the line 14th or so in the league so no need to pay January prices for players and end up 10th instead. But to compete for silverware, we have to spend at least some money.

No money for a striker and I genuinely can't think of a good loan option.

At best it will be Nkunku for one of the AM roles.

Rashford has this attitude Imo because up until now he has been indulged and allowed to continue in the team while showing very little on the pitch to justify his inclusion.

Rashford is likely confused at the moment because it's the first time in about 8 seasons he's being held accountable for his complete and utter lack of giving a ****

It's an attitude you need to remove from the squad or it will spill over to other players. To young players coming up.

That Andy Mitten bit a few weeks ago confirmed it for me. I've followed Andy for years, I buy the United we stand mag regularly and always when over at a game. He is trusted by many inside the club precisely because he doesn't peddle BS. If Andy is saying Rashford has had issues with managers you can be sure that is as close to a fact as you will get.

He obviously had issues under ETH and while I supported ETH I could never understand his loyalty to Rashford.

Maybe because of lack of attacking options within the squad he felt he had to appease Rashford but this ultimately played a part in him losing his job.
