I never understood why they don't use Olympians more as brand ambassidors. Many years ago I try to find out why Subway would use British Olympians on Irish advertising over their Irish equivalents, oddly I emailed one Irish communications company to find out why, no reply, but the ads changed.

Sadly, they replaced one of the British Olympians with an Irish Rugby star to balance it out, rather than an Irish Olympian, or a set of Irish Olympians for an Irish Audience. Can't find the Tommy Bowe advert for subway, but here are unknown British Olympians.

Reads as if she wants to do the breakfast show to avoid dropping the kids to school? Strange

    This is intriguing.

Ryan is "giving his two cents on Donald Trump" but somebody else is credited with writing the article 🤔.

“Some people live for sport and the big match every weekend, or Wimbledon in the summer or the All-Ireland championship. And I totally understand that even if I don’t get quite as excited as the fans themselves. For me, the buzz comes from politics: the reading and watching that goes with it and the sense of it all being the first draft of history.”

And yet you thought Biden was President for two terms. Intriguing.

I’d genuinely assume that’s an error as the same article appears in other publications. I’d assume it’s a case of Sinead overstepping and adding her name to the piece as she was the one who had the task of copying and pasting the email from NKM Towers - it’s how the rest of the puff pieces get published, but Sinead it appears forgot there are different rules for pieces re. The Toyman.

Maybe she had the task of making his crayon scribbles somewhat readable.

    This from the Journal yesterday.

Newly-released data shows that just 32% of the public had a positive view of the state broadcaster in surveys carried out between July and September 2023.

The figure had been 69% in the three months beforehand.

The quarterly survey was taken in the weeks following the revelations that secret payments totalling €345,000 had been made to presenter Ryan Tubridy over six years but went unreported by RTÉ.

I know some posters here still believe he'll be back in Montrose by the end of the year, but……

RTÉ’s annual report claimed that 52% of the public had trust in the broadcaster, but this was based on averaging out the figures over the course of the year, which hid the impact of the severe drop in support.

    https://www.thejournal.ie/rte-public-trust-6601541-Jan2025/

Tubridy being brought back in would also bring back attention to whole RTE backhanders. Also it has to noted that RTE's disinterest in the storm damage in Connaught is best described as Cromwellian as they seem more interested in the 46a bus route ending.

The Donald is pointing in today's diary article. Keeping up the NK Trademark.

I thought it was his disguise from when he was raiding the RTE coffers

I wouldn’t say it will be in 2025, but I do think Operation #RehabRyan is furiously working the corridors of power behind closed doors - all we get to see are the public puff pieces.

He’s doing himself no favours by not returning the €150,000 though. That €150,000 costs him significantly more than that each year he’s in exile. If only someone would point this out to him…..

I think many have forgotten the 150k tbh.

I still think they might soft launch a TV doc with Ryan at the very least doing the voice over, could even be something for Virgin Media TV, rather an indo production for RTÉ, but either way NK just has to suggest it to a producer, something small that's been funded by the CnaM under their Sound & Vision Scheme.

I don't get Tubs being this Political guru that he's now touting, I know he's said this before but even on his perusal of the papers every morning did anyone think he was a Political Anorak? He's to afraid to say boo to anyone or to give an opinion.

Your either going to be Conan O'Brien, able to avoid politics as much as possible and have something funny to say, or your John Bowman, able to bring up what a politician said 4 years ago contradicting what they are saying today.

Ah it’s all part of the act and manufactured brand.
    Tubridy V1 - The ToyMan

    Tubridy V2 - The BookMan

    Tubridy V2.5 - The PoliticsMan

V2.5 is supposed to add to the intellectual image he’s trying to portray in V2, as is the case with another version - The HistoryMan. The problem with all of these is that he never displays any actual competency or knowledge in any of these (dis)guises.

As usual with Tubridy there’s no effort or work put into developing and proving these personas are real and not manufactured. The ToyMan was a name he/Noel created on the back of a once a year LLS special after all. Once a year! He might as well have called himself The ValentinesMan or The CountryMusicMan. The Politicsman falls on the first level of scrutiny when he claimed Biden was US President twice! How can anyone who claims to love American politics like he does not know this?

The BookMan is as much a figment of his imagination as some of his claims at the Oireachtas Committee hearing. Anyone who reads one tenth as much as he claims to do would have a much broader vocabulary than he displays in the written form, and verbally.

The HistoryMan? Anyone can say they have an interest in or love something. What evidence do we have here save for his words - the words of a man known to - and I’ll be kind here - exaggerate.

The Conman would be the most appropriate monicker for him, and that’s not just in reference to the €150,000. His whole career has been one long con.

As an aside, I watched an episode of “Douglas is Cancelled” last night. There’s a line in it where “the talent” is given some advice, namely:

“When you’re out there in public, you should be balanced, boring and bland. You should be aspiring to net zero cognitive content.”

It’s advice Mr. Tubridy should have been given a long, long time ago; though one could argue the zero cognitive content part has been achieved at times.

You forgot his ‘Young Fogey’ phase.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,266 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

I had mostly banished it from my memory but he’s still trying to live that lie too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 573 ✭✭✭Jim Herring

It could be argued that there should also be a ‘The Expat’ phase while ‘finding his feet’ in London, all the celebs he name checked etc.

Someone once wrote a book about Steven Seagal, chronicling the ‘eras’ of his career:

    We need one on Tubridy.

Don't forget the 'Be Kind' man and Swiftie phases!

The Forgotten Man phase is probably most apt considering there hasn't been any public campaign to bring him back. Conor McGregor probably got more support after he was found guilty from his incel followers than the Toyman.

Oh hello….i have a trip to the Far East in a few weeks and no matter what class I fly I simply cannot sleep whilst airborne. I usually spend this time reading or watching a movie, but perhaps I could start a draft of such a work. I shall keep you posted.

This was raised on another thread but it’s an interesting idea for a new thread - one dedicated to the wider NK Family and the publicity they generate (largely in-house it seems), and their promotion of various wares. ”NK Talent and Freebie Watch” might be a good title?

For some reason our default internet home page and search engine are both Microsoft at work (and we’re not allowed to change this), and every day I’m bombarded with NK Mafia puff pieces in the news sections. This morning alone I saw headlines (note: just the headlines, I didn’t click in to read any of them) about Tubridy’s London Diary, a story about Garrihy’s home renovations (which I assume is essentially a list of all the suppliers who gave her freebies), and then a Dermot Bannon ”Room To Improve leaves viewers in tears” headline - for the second week in a row no less. Beneath the Bannon piece there’s a piece dated the 25th talking about how this weeks episode of Room To Improve will be “moving”.

This was just this morning, and crucially, I wasn’t even looking for anything NK-related. I wonder how much of this top goss about our fave celebs and superstar talent (and what products they’re promoting) we’re missing out on out on across other platforms? I think a single thread dedicated to this would be insightful, akin to the Tubridy Freebie List from his time in RTÉ.

    Any thoughts are most welcome.

@Peter Dragon I often wonder how well those news stories do, I largely think these local stars are to help these type of publications seem Irish. I wonder how the tabloid market in Britain started out in the initial years. The problem here is we don't like to have bad news stories about people.

I am not sure how British paper spin presenters leaving positions only to have them return.

I'm sure the NK agency isn't the only one that spruiks their assets shamelessly. Half of the Irish Independent is essentially advertising masquerading as news. All those home improvement shows that RTE present as documentaries are probably sponsored by building and materials providers and mortgage lenders.

The absolute vacuum of service during the largest disaster in our history shows the Dublin Broadcasting Corporation thinks it's duty is to advertisers and not the nation.

    Oh the excitement Ryan!!

So, looking at the Instagram profiles mentioned in the photo, we have:

Vivienne Nagle, Managing Director FM104 & Q102. Her LinkedIn tells me:

"Recognised for my strategic thinking, ability to deliver clear consumer insights, develop creative campaigns that stand out & engage with the consumer that are executed across all platforms.

Experienced social media and digital marketing specialist, developing award winning campaigns.

Most importantly I'm recognised as being passionate & capable of delivering."

Delivering Tubridy can't be a highlight.

Then we have Louise Samuelson who is the photographer and who, on googling, seems to take lots of photos of swimsuit models and other similar remarkable subject matters, so Tubs fits in right there.

And then Kathryn Thomas, who starts a new morning show in February with Q102, leading up to Tubs' show at 1pm (presumably still from the UK mostly).

What could all this mean? Tubs and Kathryn gushing about how great it is to "work" with each other? Q102 bragging about it's top stars?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,345 ✭✭✭RoTelly

@podgeandrodge I wouldn't be surprised if every morning at 9:30 Kathryn and Ryan have a little hand over chat every morning.

    R: London calling! London calling!

K: good morning Ryan, how are you?

R: top o the morning to you Kathryn here from London. Funny story, I was on the tube this morning reading standing up and a guy took my photo and I didn’t know anything about it until I saw it on Instagram.

K: no way! I was driving into work in my Peugeot 408 and I was just thinking to myself how economic it is to drive - as it’s free!

R: how are you for WillowWarm briquettes or books?

K: I’ll trade you some Lidl vouchers for some briquettes…..wait, what? We’re on air…
