Are doorstep traders becoming a serious problem?

not talking about salespeople who work for actual companies. I mean the fella coming to offer gutter cleaning or driveway power washing or roof repairs etc- what’s with the uptick in this lately?

Last summer for example I must have had 5 a day knocking it’s crazy. I also found as time passed the pressure they put got worse as well, mind I was never one to cave to pressure.

I also see while out working a lot of people have signs up that if these people come knocking they’ll contact the gardai, but is there even any point? Are the Garda responding to them knocking around?

Considering getting one but not sure if it’s worth bothering with- the type of individual most likely to be knocking probably can’t read anyway!

Yeah, I've experienced the hilarity of these lads calling to the door too. A firm no usually does the trick.

I have seen them take less assertive neighbours for a ride though. Pair of them set up ladders outside a house across the street, knocked on the door and bamboozled the lad that answered the door. Ran up the ladders, pulled some muck out of the bucket he had and fired it on the ground. Back down and demanded €50 for the cleaning or €250 for replacement.

    Cowboys Ted.

funny too- they’ve always done some work for the neighbours but I’ve never seen them working in the area.

that said I know one neighbour who paid €300 to power wash the driveway; granted by the end of the job it was like brand new- but the promise of “no weeds for at least 2 years” lasted about 2 weeks.

No great surprise as washing the driveway does not solve a weed problem

Or just don’t answer the door

I don’t engage with any unsolicited callers who are either presenting under the guise of offering to do work or collecting for charity…

Life is way too scammy nowadays. Go online, read reviews, engage over phone and or email and form your own impression….don’t allow yourself to be doorstepped.

“ I’m not interested, thank you..” close door, zero dialogue, no opportunity for debate or potential persuasion….

I get them calling every few weeks, it's my own fault though as I occasionally engage certain ones for hedge trimming. Once per year max and I'd never let a cold caller go near the roof.

This started with my parents (same house). Once you engage them once, they will keep coming back. They'll try to convince you that the job they did 6 months ago will need to be done again and if you agree, they'll be back 3 months after that and so on. And naturally they'll do you a good deal because they're "in the area".

A few years ago my elderly mother was plagued with particularly dodgy individuals and I did go to the Gardai about it. I showed them various flyers with fake addresses and claims to be "fully insured" and having waste collection permits. No interest from the Gardai and actually I got an insinuation that I was racist for informing them. Driving around in Transit vans targetting the elderly for cold calls and doing shoddy work for extortionate pricing is not a crime. Anyhow, I reported them anonymously to Revenue giving scans of flyers and van reg numbers etc. Probably didn't do a scrap of good however the calling seemed to reduce after that.

Threaten to set the dags on them. *

*There is a risk they will come back to steal the dags.

I find asking them for a landline phone number gets rid of them.

Gave some spin about chemical treatments etc. turned out his master plan was salt & sand.

I had one of these lads try to intimidate me into paying him €50 for cleaning my gutters "when I was out". Said my friend and neighbour next door told him to go ahead and do mine when he was doing hers, and to call back for the few bob, that I'd be glad to get them done.

    A couple of facts.

    (a) I haven't spoken to my neighbour next door in over ten years.

    (b) I have Ring cameras covering every inch of my property.

    (c) My daughter was home and would have noticed!

So, I told him where to go. When he tried to insist, I told him about the cameras and asked him to explain why, if he had done all this work on my gutters, nothing was captured on my cameras? (He said he went over the roof to do the back ones).

He started stuttering and I told him to leave, and that this conversation was also on camera with audio also recorded. He left, saying he didn't know what was wrong with my effing cameras, he did the work, blah blah blah.

The salespeople who work for actual companies are just as bad as the dodgy traders and those chuggers. All are a f**king nuisance.

They are pests! Had some around on Friday, UK registered van. I didn't answer the door as I was working and wasn't expecting anyone. They come around a few times a year, different guys every time.

    I've had them lads too.

Price starts at 150 euro. Then they'll give a special price of 100 euro, then knock on the door 20 mins later, "we're doing your neighbours drive, the equipment is out, do you a deal for 80 euro?"

    Yah no.

Couple of years ago heard some banging early one morning that sounded like it was coming from the roof
Went out the front door to see a ladder propped up against the house (cottage) and some old fella and young fella on the roof "cleaning" it. Told them to get the f*ck off the roof - said they were just helping out cleaning roofs (lotta of old folk live on the street so I knew what they were about)
Prompt call to the garda - about 15 mins later they were carted off, ladder padlocked to a fence, ladder still there there the next day. Apart from that its fairly constant through summer with gutter cleaning etc

We'd just be a firm No, thanks.

However my father would keep door to door trades people, insurance, etc talking for ages. I believe our house is black listed.

I have put up a small sign by the door bell asking that we not be disturbed by any cold calling etc. Seems to be working so far.

    Howrya boss.

Nothing good is ever offered door to door.

It's almost comical how their sales pitch evolves with time and to suit the situation. The latest one for garden maintenance is using Ash Dieback to scare people. I had one "fully insured tree surgeon with 25 years' experience" advise me to take out an Ash tree on my property as it had the disease and was dangerous. Well actually it's a Sycamore tree.

Imagine being an elderly person who is living independently and happily at home but has the very early signs of cognitive impairment that affects their judgement. These callers can spot that better than any doctor.

When my mother was living independently and subjected to constant cold calling (she was sensible enough to usually say No) I mentioned this to a few people. Unbelievably, one stupid bint suggested that my mother should go into a nursing home because of this.

I have one of those too. It doesn't seem to put them off.

Impressive that the business card or flyer has a long list of potential service and not one name.

There does not seem to be any reliable website for traders .

The only good service offered by a knock on your door is takeaway delivery.

There's been a crackdown by the courts on fraudulent injury claims especially slips and trips.

Those who were very prevalent in this area have realised a major income stream is gone, hence a bigger push in driveways and roofing.

Ive found there are less and less calling the last few years maybe since covid?

Maybe its because ive tried to keep my own gutters cleared as best i can its a balls to do if you are not comfortable on ladders etc!
