Watched it because its you know Star Trek except it isn't Star Trek

Really felt like a double episode opener to a series and had the aura of Rebel Moon about it, and the stupid coded transmission text - wtf, was that supposed to be episode titles and they just dumped a lot of footage to make it into a movie

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,565 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

I think I could like it a lot more if it didn't have generic cyborg man and tiny alien in golum man.

watched it there. Absolute dog ****. One of the worst things I’ve ever seen.

That's saying something coming from a person who looks like they have a Michael Bay Transformers avatar 🤣

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 5,400 Mod ✭✭✭✭Optimus Prime

How dare you sir! Haha , Michael Bay films are not Transformers films. I’m a G1 Transformers man all the way. I believe that avatar is from the comics. That’s Snakeyes from GiJoe sitting on primes shoulder.

My god, they are like the worst type of knock off sh1te you'd see being flogged off on Moore Street when there is a Taylor Swift or Rihanna concert or something in town. Can practically see Da-knockoff buying a load of t-shirts for 2.50 in Penny's and Ma-knockoff and the kids ironing on the dodgy homemade transfers.

That's essentially it. These are just AI generated images which will be reproduced to have any number of film or whatever names attached.

If some sap or misfortune buys one it's a win if not it costs nothing to the supplier. Sometimes they are also just clickbait links.

Oh absolutely but you wouldn't expect it from official merch. It looks like the very definition of Temu or Ali-Express (unless I missed a point and it was just Cookie-based advertising instead of official merch)

Anyway, I LOVED S1 of SNW. Thought it was the best season 1 of any trek (Although you could argue that their Disco episodes could be considered S1). Season 1 knocked it out of the park. Season 2 less so but still great. And looking forward to season 3.

    But

If a forced break after the reception of this movie and the general "meh" attitude of the academy series requires a break for a couple of years to replan/reevaluate? Then I can live with that. A breather is not always a bad thing or sign of lack of interest. Give us one more season of SNW. Then break for 3-4 years and come out with something totally unrelated to Disco or Picard series it's anything else.

I will suffer the loss of Lower Decks and SNW if we could get away from the rest of the current generic dross.

LD and SNW work because the people involved see these shows as Trek and not product and it is glaringly obvious. The rest? Make a CW series.

But. If you sacrifice the the superb LD and SNW for sh1te then....

Love SNW but boy do I miss the days where you would have 20+ episodes year, now you get 10 episodes every year or two

Need a new show advancing in to the future with some new tech but not stupidly out there like Discovery became and give us 15 episodes at least, don't even care if there's filler episode to keep costs down if its still a good story

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,604 ✭✭✭Rawr

It was a very different TV environment, and I do miss the 20+ episode seasons it used to produce. The main problem is how many consume a TV show these days. With transmission Television you had to fill a programming block to get your advert revenue. That was built around the high broadcast season of TV channels, thus needing those 20+ episodes. You also had a much leaner production. Fairly often TNG-era Trek episodes were being shot only a couple of months ahead of first broadcast. With a handful of exceptions for block-buster episodes, they hadn’t the luxury to rewrite or reshoot too much. They had to get efficient and efficiency led to longer seasons.

But the streaming world is very different. There’s no advert block to fill, and depending on budget there doesn’t seem to be much stigma in reshooting stuff. They’re not being pushed by other factors to make 20+ episodes, and so they happily wallow in the new norm of only 10.

This routinely annoys the hell out of me when I find a new show I like these days (Silo for example; f*cking brilliant) but know that I’ll only get 2-3 months of new stuff before I have to wait a whole year…or longer…for new episodes.

Sadly I must confirm that the screenshot was from an advert email I got from the officially licensed Star Trek Shop.

It’s something to behold the kind of slapdash Temu-esque (as you allude to) style of the merch they make on that shop. Like, here’s their Voyager celebration series that came out last week:

    IMG_0686.jpeg

Wouldn’t you like a glass can for your coffee? (Why not a copy of Janeway’s mug FFS?) How about a t-shint with Seven in the costume thar caused the actress to faint a couple of times?

No? Tell you what, how about First Contact? Everyone loves First Contact!

    IMG_0687.jpeg

There. The first names of some people. All your favourite characters! “Will”, “Zefram”….. “Comm Badge!”

My very laboured point is that Star Trek merch is in as sorry a state as Section 31: An endeavour with the Star Trek name slapped on it, but not having the foggiest of what to actually do with it.

Read some of the reviews. Won't be watching this turd. What does Kurtzman have to do to get fired?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,565 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

It's his bosses need firing and they probably will be when the takeover is complete. Paramount+ has been mostly a disaster.

Kurtzmann is locked in until at least 2026 and because it's his production company who hold all the physical and digital designs it will be much cheaper to extend that deal. So don't hold your breath.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 397 ✭✭eadrom

chuck him out and he can take those fugly designs with him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,565 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

That's not the point. Reusing assets is cheaper which is why we saw stupid stuff like Discovery shuttles in Picard.

If the new owners want quick returns they will just stick with Kurtzmann. And why wouldn't they when you have fans praising SNW which is the only currently running show.

now that I’ve calmed down a wee bit…

I will admit to not watching it all. The Vulcan accent though. Why?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,687 ✭✭✭Acosta

What's he going to do with all the sets if he can't make Star Trek with them? Sounds like there could be a deal done there.

"And why wouldn't they when you have fans praising SNW which is the only currently running show."

What do you mean currently running? Season 2 ended ages ago and we are still awaiting season 3. Anyone know what the story with Prodigy is? Is it finished now or what?

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Prodigy is finished as is Lower Decks and Discovery. Academy is yet to start.

So ya SNW is the only one currently live.

Speaking of Prodigy is funny that in the middle of all the desperate salivating over Michelle Yeoh Paramount had and ignored the potential of a massive rising star in Ella Purnell. Will probably never get her back for Prodigy now.

Thank. Yes I looked it up after. Forget they had cancelled it. Such a pity.

Yes a big miss by Paramount there such a pity.

    I tried... I genuinely tried.

I got past the p1ss-poor exposition dump from Jamie Lee Curtis ("and that was in another dimension" or something. Just phrased so inelegantly and poorly)

I got past the Zach Snyder slo-mo and additional character exposition dump.

I got past the cheap-ass Galadrial knock-off slooow speak from the Terran at the start.

Past the Michael Sheen-from-Tron guy. Past the stupidly over-stylised and inefficient layout of the club (imagine the walk from one arm end to another? That's the closest you'd get to a Trek from this garbage).

Got past the initial flirting/conversation between Yeoh and the S31 guy (his volume seemed much lower than hers). And past the character introductions.

Then I got to MEET the rest of the team. Started off bad but, again, try! And I got to the robo-vulcan accent and initial argument and nope. Nope nope NOPE could not stomach another second

    Absolutely awful.

For god's sake, I watched ALL of discovery. Even enjoyed first couple of seasons to various degrees.

But this... THIS was simply unwatchable for me. Everyone involved should be embarrassed

Got about 45 mins into it in two sittings. The Vulcan is really into "you couldn't make this **** up even though they just did" territory. I dislike him less than the Juggernaut dude though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,172 ✭✭✭✭Stark

Was watching the scene at the start with Georgiou murdering her family and all I could think of was Tilly reminiscing about "what a bad-ass".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,565 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Juggernaut dude just makes no sense for what we have seen in Star Trek. There is just absolutely no need for all that bulky tech.

i'm going for a few pint this evening, home around 9 or 10. Bottle of whiskey by my side, I might try and get through this before bed.

save yourself the inevitable hangover. Don’t.

That weird tiny bird thing piloting the Vulcan robot reminds me of that carbon monoxide and canary.

Well watched the lot. Doesn't get any better in the second half. At least it's something to shut up the sanctimonious "All Trek is good Trek" doses.
