Yeah, that's a staple of FromSoftware games; even the most basic b*tch random grunt can get a few good hits in and stunlock you to death. Everything is a threat and everything can kill you, especially if you start to get overconfident.

Lady Butterfly is a real challenge. Not quite on the level at the boss at the top of the pagoda we're all talking about, but she's definitely super tricky. Hell I got stuck on the boss outside her place (Juzo the Drunkard) for ages and even he was bad enough, especially trying to take out all the grunts around him first every damn time.

There are few easy bosses or areas in the game anyway, it all more depends on how you're meshing with the combat system when you're there. The main thing when it comes to bosses is just keeping the pressure on them as much as possible, and aiming to break their posture meter rather than slowly whittling down their health. Give them too much time or space and they punish you for it. Again it's what I love about that combat system in the game, you have to be every bit as relentless as the boss.

One thing I’d say about Lady Butterfly though is she’s one of the few bosses where targeting their health is the better option - as far as I remember she’s far too mobile and her posture recovers quickly.

Posture recovers quicker the more health someone has so it's usually a case of doing enough damage so that you can out eh... PPS (posture per second) them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 36,711 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Yeah that's the thing about having to be relentless with the bosses and stay on top of them; in taking down their posture you'll get a few hits in which takes off some health, which then affects their posture rate. Lady Butterfly is definitely very mobile, but a shuriken when she goes up top can bring her down quickly and let you get back on her with a few hits.

So yeah I was probably wrong in saying to focus on their posture meter rather than health, as both are linked, but you're really taking down their health just to build their posture meter as quickly as possible, because if you're just focusing on getting a few quick hits in and chipping down their health gradually you're going to give the boss too much of a gap to punish you.

Anyone played Sekiro on Steamdeck or know how it'd compare to console? All this talk is giving me the hankering for another playthrough

    Kind of laughed at this.

    Turns out it's true....

Why the hell would you do this!

Yes that drunk guy took me forever to get past, I think that's why I got so frustrated. I literally took about 20 attempts to kill that guy, hours of time and then you have lady butterfly almost immediately after!

He was a boss you couldn't sneak up on and do one of the execute moves on to take off one of his lives. Painful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 36,711 ✭✭✭✭Penn

You could, but you pretty much had to take out all the goons, then hide and de-aggro him. He'd return to his original position and without the goons there you could then sneak up on him.

That said, even knowing that, I think it took me more than 20 tries. He very nearly had me quitting the game altogether, especially with the delay and tracking of some of his slower moves. I remember complaining here that he reached his sword back to do a downward swipe, and I had enough time to dodge around him three times, yet he was still able to spin around 270degrees on the heel of his back foot and still hit me. But that goes back to what we're saying about the combat not clicking early in the game. Dodging attacks is far less effective than standing there and deflecting it. It took me a while to get used to that.

  • Administrators Posts: 55,771 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

Ah yea but taking out all the goons then de-aggroing is also a slow process. 😁

I might go back to it and try again, tho that will probably be a struggle as I don't remember anything about the combat now.

You’ll actually be surprised about how much muscle memory you still have when you go back to it. I would recommend starting again though to get back into it, but I would nearly guarantee you’ll finish off the bosses you’ve already done much quicker this time.

Resident Evil 4 came out 20 years ago... Jan 11th 2005. Most other X came out x years ago don't make me feel old. This one does... I'm old.

You can 100% sneak up on Juzu and get a death blow on him.

Sneak around the left of the arena and you can stealth kill all the normal enemies. Back off between each one and you won't argo the rest. Once they are all dead you can sprint out on Juzu and death blow him. Then use your firecracker to interrupt his attacks. He's very easy once you get that down.

2005 was only 4 years ago right? ....right????😭

The guys at the door feel a bit janky. Like you'd expect not to be able to deathblow them. I thought it was impossible until I read here people were doing it.

Played through a boss in Nine Sols last night (Lady Ethereal for anyone who has played it) which is my favourite boss in any game for quite some time. Just that deeply satisfying mix of being able to learn all the attacks, but the stakes, speed and rhythm escalating in interesting ways throughout the fight. It even uses one of my least favourite boss tropes (fakeout clones) in a super rewarding way.

    What a game.

Marvel Rivals is calling to me like the Green Goblin calls to Norman Osborn. That Overwatch feedback loop is like crack but like crack, it isn't really good for you. I won't install it…..I cant….I mustn't.

Well another weekend of playing this game. And I actually became fond of Giza. There were plenty of secrets and different ways to plan routes into each area. I even found the Nazi army uniform by chance.

I was leaving an area and noticed you could climb into a building and the uniform was there to be taking.

Came in very handy as there are a lot of Nazi's around the place. I also got stuck twice by Nazi's walking up to a doorway and never leaving it was annoying. In the end I just walloped them with an object and the way was clear again. Bit annoying how they do not move when you walk into them even just enough for you to slip by.

Eventually finished spiderman two. Good game, middle bit turned into a bit of a collectathons but holy moly was that final fight tedious just went on and on same stuff over and over.

Series really has nowhere to go gameplay wise anymore yet looks like insomniac will flog this horse at least one more time, hopefully this time it's actually released as a DLC not full cash grab morales was.

Was looking at Kingdom Come 2 previews and saw this great vid of Worth A Buy following an NPC to get back the money she won off him at a dice game. Not a quest, just waiting, watching and following. For anyone not going to watch, he played an NPC at a dice game but kept losing and figured she had trick dice (don't know how he came to that conclusion) but anyway. Waited for night time, followed her home, snuck in and robbed her, found trick dice and also took her clothes. Next day, went back to play her and she arrived in her nightdress, only a few coins to play and couldn't believe she lost. Very clever mechanics.

I was looking through the Xbox game store and there is an Electrician Simulator. Got a shock when I saw it.

I played it and I was sorry I did as I connect the live to the neutral and neutral to the live and blew up my Xbox.

Playing Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. It's really good and finally, a game where I can consistently parry. It's quite simple in this but still satisfying.

One of my favourites from last year. Nothing revolutionary but does everything really well and has everything you would want from a metroidvania. If you enjoy this, particularly the challenging platform sections, I would highly recommend the 2 Ori games.

Started Nine Sols last night. Haven't gotten too far, still trying to get used to the combat. My initial gripe is that visually, it can be hard to see the indicators of enemy attacks because of the white swipe your own attack leaves, so parries can feel off. Also not a huge fan of the move where if you parry, you can hold R1 and it puts the marker on them which takes a huge chunk off their health. I both keep forgetting to hold R1, or if there's more than one enemy it leaves you immobile and vulnerable.

They're not issues as such, just taking a bit of getting used to. But like I said, I'm still very early in the game and I'm sure I had similar (if not bigger) gripes with Sekiro when I'd started it.

The R1 thing takes some getting used to but it does click and it differentiates itself from being too derivative of sekiro.

Going through the backlog and started Armoured Core 6 again. Bounced off it when it came out originally, only played a couple of hours before sinking time into BG3.

Really enjoying it now, though and on Chapter 3. Definitely the first chapter boss that hooked me, that familiar souls boss design but entirely new at the same time. Total chaos on screen but manageable.

Haven’t a clue about mech design though, I’m sort of changing bits without really thinking about it! I have gotten to boss type enemies to find my build is entirely useless against them and have had to rebuild and start the level again, thankfully the levels are short!

Just on the final boss now (holy SH*T) and the 'R1' Talisman attack is very much the game's secret sauce. Perhaps not immediately obvious with bog standard regular enemies (though it's very useful for many of them), but rest assured in bosses it is essential. Not exaggerating when I say all I did in some bosses was parry and talisman attack. There's some upgrades too that allow you to use it how you like - IMO the one that gives you full control over the explosion timing is one of the game's most invaluable tools.

For me the game has probably the single best and most satisfying parry in all of gaming, alongside only Sekiro. The utility is endless, and the timing window just right (as in rewarding but risky). Stuff like PoP's parrying feels pretty unsatisfying to me, but the Nine Sols one is so much fun - especially when it throws in a few variations on the standard version. It becomes almost like an intense, zen-like rhythm game at its best.

You're playing the game correctly. AC is about tinkering with your mech and tailoring it to each mission.

Yeah the R1 Talisman attack feels very risk/reward, I just need to get better at recognising the risk (didn't realise other enemies can attack you while you're doing it).
