'The establishment' has a real meaning: the professions, to academia, the education system, the judiciary, the mainstream media, the civil service, the arts and religious bodies.

Almost without exception, other than his personal appointees within the US, these institutions across the West are populated by people who are opposed to Trump, or at least won't support him in public.

The establishment doesn't change because of a single election. It took a cultural revolution to flip it. I don't see any sign of it flipping back, but who knows?

Jaysus, ye're at the cultural revolution phase already? Things are escalating quicker than I thought.

You've still not explained how academia has impacted your life more than the transfer of wealth to Trump's backers

I didn't say it did or did not, randomuser02125. You just asked me that question apropos of nothing.

That is so wide as to cover anybody you want. Is a student teacher considered part of the establishment? Surely the military has to be included in that? And the political parties as well. And what about little league coaches? Are rich people included, or only certain rich people?

Obviously the supreme court. And the founding fathers are surely the very essence of the estabhlishment

What about corporations? Surely they are part of it. And big land owner farmers?

As I said, like woke it can include, and exclude anyone that you want. But always those you don't like.

Never heard of a cold case? One which is still open, but not being actively pursued due to the lack of any likely positive outcome unless new information comes to light? The cop gets reassigned to do something more productive in the meantime.

That doesn't excuse the any errors of the past made due to a lack of accountability, but from a pragmatic aspect from this day forward, it makes sense.

MAGA nonsense. If you think some professor of entomology in some university that nobody has ever heard of wields more power than Musk or Zuckerberg then your definition is objectively wrong.

Be honest, "Establishment" just means people who disagree with Trump, racism, and white supremacy.

If you think that Trump, who separated kids on purpose in order to deter immigrants and appeal to his xenophobic base, is shutting down the department set up to repair the damage on economical grounds, I've got a bridge to sell you.

America is not a conservative society. FDR won 4 terms on a platform that people like Sanders and AOC now run. Vast majority of American voters want cheaper education, access to universal heathcare, better public transport/infrastructure, cheaper housing, higher wages, better job protection. Hell the majority of Republican voters believe in gun control of some form.

What is conservative are the special interest groups who buy the elections every cycle. The Kochs, Adelson family, Heritage Foundation, NRA, Evangelical White Christians groups etc, they want none of those things and make it their business to stop them ever being implemented

It is. Only an infinitesmal minority want real change. Outside that demographic, it's not even discussed. In some ways, it has more in common with the Most Serene Republic of Venice than it does with a European democracy. Power is concentrated in the hands of the rich and powerful, welfare is minimal and oversight on corporations borders on non-existent in some respects.

FDR won 4 terms but the last one was in the forties. That's 80 years ago. Not a great comparison. Between then and now, we've seen ballooning inequality, a collapse in purchasing power, the exponential growth of a ravenous military-industrial complex and the concentration and consolidation of the nation's media, wealth and resources in a tiny amount of hands.

Americans, particularly those in the rustbelt and red states have been voting for oblivion for decades. Now, that oblivion is a reality. In the greatest country in the world, healthcare expenses are the leading cause of bankruptcy and nobody questions it. Ditto for school shootings. The system is perfect so it is never criticised, even in popular culture. The only American shows I've ever seen criticise the status quo are Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and Malcolm in the Middle.

Americans might want better living conditions but it's meaningless unless they take action which they won't. Concessions like universal suffrage, sick days and annual leave weren't gifts from the establishment. They were prizes which were fought for and won. We have a National Health Service here in the UK because returning servicemen and the war generation tossed out Churchill's Conservatives after the war for real change from Clement Attlee's Labour party.

At the very least they could get informed but they'd much rather issue death threats to librarians because books that might explain puberty exist.

I'm reminded of one of my favourite jokes. What's the difference between the US and a yoghurt? Give it 250 years and a yoghurt will develop a culture.

Nail on the proverbial head there. I totally agree. Its what they do to distract while they go about their power and wealth grabs.

    Not economical. Manpower.

The current lead headline on CNN is only the start, even from what I've seen from my own little foxhole. This isn't "build the wall" like last term with processes and lag time. He's going after the migration issue with most everything he can throw at it right now, and it's not going to be cheap. I don't think he gives a hoot about economical issues relating to it, or other long-term ramifications.

Im surprised the MAGA supporters haven't mentioned that since Trump took office there have been zero reported cases of immigrants eating cats and dogs in Springfield!

308 illegal immigrants arrested yesterday in the US. According to Trump, 21 million entered the last 3 years, so they need to be deporting 19,000 a day, just to get back to the time Trump was in power. I do hope some reporters start using the figures trump lies about to call him out. Be like COVID figures, call him out that he's 19k a day short.

"Look! A biological male in women's sports! Rah!"

Said against a backdrop of rising global temperatures, rising inequality and nuclear sabre rattling.

Yeah, a fella in a womans race!

Riley Gaines can tell you all about that in one of many YouTube videos. Thing is once she got going with her interviews she raised a massive swell of support for Trump, endorsing him and his campaign to stop men who identify as women & girls (in female sports), her support snowballed and the US public got on board, Trump was onto a winner, then the "Harris is for they/them" advert came out, and the rest is history….

I noticed in the headlines on RTE Re- "The Bishop v Trump" it focuses on the immigrants and LGBTQ part of the Budde sermon. But it does not comment on the one where she said "Profiting from social media". I thought that was a line that would cut even closer to the bone?

So when is Trump going to go after the gangs and the cartels? I am hoping sooner rather than later. We all know how that ended for JFK and JFK was doing it less out there than Trump will do. Trump has to avoid every attempt on his life they only need 1 good shot and its lights out Trump.

As pointed out above, he pardoned the guy who established Silk Road, a guy who facilitated the sale of millions of dollars of illegal drugs.

So is he not going to go after them then?

That's another lie in his promises and another failed promise if does not.

One of the EOs he signed on Day 1 declared them to be terrorist organizations, and instructs the agencies to come up with specific designations and a plan accordingly within two weeks. It's worth noting that a terrorist designation brings up the possibility of using miltary force in other jurisdictions, with or without their advance knowledge.

Yes I knew that. I doubt the cartels or gangs are happy about that. It only takes one to shoot Trump. We can but hope.

Mod - going forward can you all please keep the discussion civil and avoid offensive and derogatory language? You can express your point and opinion of people without that. Thank you.

A Jan 6 woman refused the pardon as she said it was a riot and was involved in hurting police officers and causing damage. She said she deserved prison.

See, brought one war to an end already.

"The UN Secretary General has praised the contribution of US President Donald Trump for "robust diplomacy" in helping to bring about the Gaza ceasefire."

I just loved this Guardian headline:

    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jan/22/trump-threatens-putin-with-taxes-tariffs-and-sanctions-over-ukraine-war

Given that thanks to sanctions, Russia exports SFA to the US, they must be sh*tting themselves at this Trump threat. Goes to show you what an utter f*cking moron he is: mods, those are the words of Rex Tillerson, Trump's former Secretary of State

Did you miss him lifting sanctions on far right groups in the West Bank? Or him appointing multiple people who outright don't believe in a Palestinian people? I'd say over the next few years you'll see a Trump that is happy to back Netanyahu.

I see Biden pardoned the officer who shot the rioter who was trying to gain access to the inner chamber.

    Very wise.

But extremely sad for America at the same time.
