Powerful EM interference Dun Laoghaire

Any time I'm driving past the town hall, along Crofton Road to the West Harbour (towards Monkstown), there is no 3G/4G signal, any bluetooth connection between phone and car drops and only restores past the turn for the harbour.

Happens in any car I drive, from oul bangers to brand new ones. If you listen to the AM radio there's something roaring a sawtooth type wave.

What could be the cause of this?

Could there be a signal from the irish lights building there on the right? Is it talking to the ships and or bouys maybe?

Could it be anything caused by the Dart? You're driving parallel to the line there.

it goes away at the junction to go down to the harbour, but thereafter, you're driving alongside the railline but there is no interference

begins at the town hall, ends exactly at the lights. like clockwork.

interferes with MBUX, Audi MMI, Porsche carplay, those poxy little bluetooth transmitter things for your phone

Interesting that the interference is being noted at a coastal location.

Back in the early days of legal Phantom FM operating from North Wall Quay in the Docklands, we had our broadband service delivered over an RF link and it used to fail at random times for a couple of days. We suspected local interference and contacted Comreg to investigate.

One of the theories being investigated was that it was a ship visiting the port occasionally that was operating something on the same frequency range. Despite checking Dublin port activity logs, we/they never got to the bottom of it, but it eventually stopped …. or we moved to a cable service, can't remember which happened first.

In this case, I would suspect the parallel DART high voltage line. Being a nerd living in North Wicklow, I often go for walks around Greystones while listening to the marine, aircraft and amateur bands on a hand held scanner - walking parallel and close to the Dart line causes the scanner to stop at multiple frequencies for various types of noise. So much so, that scanning is not possible within a short proximity of the line.

the AM (MW) interference is I'd expect unrelated, considering the vast differences in frequency between that (around 1MHz) and 3G/4G bands.

Unlikely anything would be done to resolve AM/MW interference , unless perhaps amateur radio operators complain it is effecting nearby ham bands (80m, 160m) and make noise through the IRTS . It (AM band interference) likely is radiated by the overhead wires.

There is a tower very near there beside DART line with some mobile operators as well as DART use:

It is/was not beyond possibility there is a flaw with mobile infastructure , but if there was surely it would be fixed rapidly. Is it still happening?

Irish lights maybe? Report it Comreg, let them investigate with their new fancy equipment.

On a related note, I had a power cut a few days ago. It was great, the RFI noise floor greatly reduced. I had a battery radio on 198Khz. As the lights came on all the switch mode power supply noise also restarted, that was the end of my listening.

more specifically a Bluetooth issue so.

Bluetooth uses 2.4-2.5 GHz . Maybe the interference is from very leaky microwave ovens !
