    I was looking at a car on line for 26000 and thinking of changing mine if they have a half decent trade in.

    Mine is a 211 Renault Captur Diesel 30000Km excellent condition just passed NCT

    I saw they had the exact model as mine with more miles for 21500.

    I know they have to make money on trade ins but they offered €15000 for mine.

    Is this the going price?

    What should I look for to sell privately?

    Theres dealers selling 2023 models for €21k and €22k. I don’t see why anyone would pay much more than €15k for yours considering its 2 years old and a private sale. By all means try negotiate a better deal with the dealer tho

    You cannot really compare what a dealer offers you for your trade in versus what they are asking for the same car on their forecourt.

    Cost to trade up is the important figure you should be looking at. Shop around and find other dealers selling similar cars to the one your interested in and see how much they want from you to trade up. Cost to trade up can vary a bit from dealer to dealer.

    I saw that and I'd be very weary of buying it. 2 owners? 5500 miles?

    Also mines diesel

    The dealer is selling this one same spec as mine but more milage

    So how much do you think your car is worth then? And what do you think is a reasonable profit margin for the dealer to make?

    Do you think 40% is reasonable?

    I'm not being smart but you seem very knowledgeable about cars and I just came for advice on what I should be looking for.

    I certainly expect the dealer to make money off mine but 6500 on a car they paid 15000 for with very little to be done on it seems a bit much.

    It was serviced and had a NCT last week

    So from your perspective they are going to make €6500 from your trade in.

    First of all, it probably won’t even sell for the full asking price. So you may as well take €1000 for discounts. That leaves €5500

    Then there is a €1050 VAT bill. That leaves €4450.

    Then you probably have at least €450 in prep costs. I know you say it passed NCT but it may need other work such as minor servicing, a full detailed valet & polish, maybe some cosmetic bodywork etc. So that leaves €4000

    Then they probably have to pay the salesman another €400 or so in commission? That leaves something closer to €3500.

    And from the €3500 they have pay their staff, overheads, rent, electricity, corporation tax etc etc.

    And not to mention it seems like you haven’t even tried negotiating. They will probably give you more for your car if you negotiate. So it could be more like €2500 to €3000 profit if you push them.

    So yeah, I think it’s reasonable enough, but like I said, by all means you should try negotiate further.

    The dealership will have overheads of a few hundred thousand to cover for a small enough dealership rising into the millions for a large dealer.

    Premises costs such as rent, rates, light, heat, maintenance

    Staff Wages, other staffing costs such as uniforms maybe, training

    Bank fees, accountant fees, legal fees, marketing expenses, tax bills

    They have to paid out of the profit per car which as you'll have seen above, is about half of the 6000 in your particular case.

    You still might be able to close the gap a little bit though but forget about getting anywhere near what they'll retail it for.

    There are many prices for the same car, for example:

    1- Main dealer price (most expensive)
    2- Dealer price (Expensive)
    3- Dodgy dealer (Okish)
    4- Private sale
    5- Trade in
    6- "Cash for cars" cowboys or facebook lowballers

    I recently sold a car privately. To find the best price, I tracked advertisements for similar cars on Donedeal. After observing the market for a few weeks, I was able to determine the right price. It turned out to be considerably higher than the previous offers and trade-in valuations. While I received cash offers of 13-14k and trade-in valuations of 15-15.5k, I sold it privately for 17k in just two days. Of course, if I had more time and patience, I could have gotten 17.5k.


    The funny thing is, there is a guy who is selling a car for a similar price and his ad is there for over 40 days. He is flexible to sell for a cheaper price, but his ad sucks… If you sell it privately, I would suggest not only to take great photos from all sides, dashboard, etc… But also, a complete and decent description.

    I guess the target price for this car should be between 16.5 to 18K. I had better results in Facebook than donedeal, FYI.

    I am sorry, but that seems like an excuse for a dealer to price gouge away.

    Car Sales men imo do **** all these days. They have very little knowledge of their product, no follow-up, no interactions… its like you are doing them a favour by buying 'their' car…

    OP, I would sell privately, but price it to sell.
