Nervy stuff but great results in the end

massive win, home advantage is nice, no idea where the games will be played though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,321 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

Far from perfect but we got the result, was happy with the work rate to keep Cardiff out at the end even with the game won.

    Thats a good result.

Probably should have been more comfortable but wanted 5 and got 5. Yet again bundee showed up really well and I don't want to see piers play anywhere but 13 in the future, he's got so much about him there.

Chance of a number of big ticket home games coming up now which is just the boost the team and club needed.

All that mattered was the win and the bonus point. Guaranteed home games which hopefully bring us to the final.

    The mystery tour continues.

Bundee has often been called out for being ineffectual for Connacht vis a vis Ireland, but he was great tonight and I feel that he has made a vital contribution this season. It's obvious he gives a ****. Great to see.

Didn't catch the name of the Welsh guy on commentary is but he's very good.

Actually seems to enjoy rugby which is a rarity for rugby commentators who often seem to hate what they're watching based on how they speak about it.

Ok so bottom place qualifier from the challenge cup in the next round.

I've a fear that that could be the Lions :(

Other options looking like maybe Scarlet or even Cardiff or Perpignan again

Super performance from the 23 tonight.

Minuses : Giving access to our 22 with poor discipline. Going wide too quickly. A few wobbly passes from Ben M.

Pluses : Great line speed in D. Great hands in attack. Varying point of attack. No drop off when bench came on.

Connacht will win challenge Cup this year. Where's yer man posting on this saying he give 100/1 on connacht to win it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,365 ✭✭✭SqueakyKneecap

Great result even if there was plenty of mistakes. A home draw is massive.

Interested to see what they do with the R16 (& hopefully QF + SF) venue wise, you figure you're leaving money on the table if you leave them in the Sportsground, but the other side of that is you have the team playing in a venue that's new to them too.

I'm here and still not offering odds. Still think we are not good enough to win it though. Despite a decent win in Wales.

Agree 💯. He has been called out before for not putting in big performances but I genuinely think that he gives it everything any time he plays for us and drives big performances from those around him. Wouldn't be too critical of Iaone either - I think he gives us a bit of a spark at 10 that we have been lacking - every 10 is going to make mistakes from time to time.We appear to have decent depth in most positions at the moment and we should have a great chance in the Challenge Cup with a home quarter and, if we win, a home semi. 💪

How do seedings work in the Challenge Cup for teams coming down from the Champions Cup?

Could we find ourselves against Bath or Bulls in the last 16?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 332 ✭✭Strand1970

I am guessing those clubs coming from the CC go into 3rd position. Otherwise it would be unfair for the number 1 spot TO play potentially a stronger team from the CC

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 338 ✭✭AccidentallyOnside

Yes, they come down seeded 9 and down, so in the very possible event that they win away against the 8th place team we could be looking at one of those teams coming to Galway. Presuming we win our last 16 clash.

That really annoys me about the current formats it's stupid that teams from the same pools who already played can meet again in the 1st knockout round.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 997 ✭✭✭Ciaran

I agree but it happened in the old format too. I think Biarritz finished as top seeds one year, played Northampton who finished second in the same group in the quarters and lost.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,683 ✭✭✭testtech05

Fair enough it did but I feel like it happens a lot more in the new format. Maybe just recency bias

Bit of a stinker to see top of the Premiership, Bath, fall into the Challenge Cup after today. Very likely favourites to win it now if they take it any way seriously.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 332 ✭✭Strand1970

I can honestly see the next cup game in Castlebar. Full house potentially an extra 300 - 400k for connacht to get a top world class no10. I know I am dreaming but connacht need every penny

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 997 ✭✭✭Ciaran

It does alright, Leinster played two teams from our group again last year. Having a last 16 round gives more chances for it to happen too I suppose.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 29,890 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

Nah, you're right it happens a lot more now. Just a function of how the groups work.

It was rare enough, though had some notable events in the "old" Euro cup where teams that lost in the H2H came back and won in the QF.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,365 ✭✭✭SqueakyKneecap

If it's Cardiff I doubt we'd have it in Castlebar tbh. However if we won that I could definitely see it happening. Mayo play the week before a CCQF so it'd be available.

Who will be at 12 next match (vs Glasgow)? No Aki, Forde. Possible POC, Hawkshaw or J.Devine…

And Wilkins should not select Oliver at all matches of Challenge cup from now because he is too risky especially knock-out competitions.
