I think grey squirrels are declining rapidly. I'm not sure if its due to inbreeding or pinemartins or both.

yeah, i was thinking that the map is probably out of date. the resurgence of the pine marten is what is usually credited with the change in fortune.

the first two of those i checked appear to be bunkum (the arizona and colorado ones). at a hit rate of two out of two, i'm disregarding the rest.

e.g. arizona; why would they ban reversing in specific conditions if there was a general ban on reversing?

Arizona tends to do most things a bit (ahem) "differently" - the heat drives them nuts.

There's also definitely red squirrels in Donegal now, in the areas marked as none.

Map created by reddit user ConvilliousThe map above shows the 25 biggest private ranches in Texas.

The biggest is King Ranch at 825,000 acres or 3,338 km2 (1,289 sq miles).

This is more then double the size of London or 3 times larger than all 6 of Europe’s micro states combined.

On the subject of huge ranches...

Anna Creek cattle station in South Australia is considered to be the world's largest farm, occupying an incredible 23,677 square kilometres (equivalent to 5.1 million acres), larger than Northern Ireland (14,000 sq km) and almost the size of Belgium (30,000 sq km).

Map of its location in Australia - and a comparison of its size (in red) with the biggest ranches in Texas, which Anna Creek dwarfs.

What are the main reasons why lake Superior has no major city on its shore, unlike other great lakes

the land isn't suitable for agriculture is the obvious answer, but that lake is huge, so, not sure.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 13,537 Mod ✭✭✭✭JupiterKid

The reason that there is no major city on the shores of Lake Superior compared to the other great lakes are manifold - the main one being that Superior is the most northerly and westerly - and therefore the winters on the lake are punishingly cold.

Also, Lake Superior traverses the Canadian Shield which is very rocky and is characterised by very thin soils so not suitable for most agriculture. The northern shore of the lake in particular also has many high cliffs and is not ideal in any way for the location of a large city.

But the main reason is that it's simply too damn cold in winter compared to the other lakes. Lake Huron doesn't have a major settlement on its shores either, for similar reasons to Lake Superior.

Never quite understood , why modern turkey , doesn't ,recognise that it was a genocide, blame it squarely on the former Ottoman empire ,the Sultan of the time , his ministers , the CUP party( who were in power ,and seemed to have been pretty much genocidal bastards , having a good go at Turkish Greeks , Syrians and the Kurds )

But they were a government of a different time and a different regime , and partly a different age ..

It may still be a crime in Turkey to even mention or refer to the Armenian Genocide.

Turkey has a serious problem with a very violent and macho culture amongst its men, with rape, domestic violence and femicide rates being very high compared to Western countries.

Rape within marriage is common in Turkey, particularly in the poorer and less developed east of the country.

Not surprising that they deny the Armenian genocide - too much blinkered hot-headedness and "pride" in acknowledging their historical crimes.
