I did find it was pretty forgiving if you had to course correct fairly early in a race, you could catch up pretty easily(and it was cool to drift around the corner and straight back into the mix) but it was more annoying than good. Getting screwed late in the race was maddening, getting stuck up the mountains meant it took ages to go and get to a new event, and really driving up to a map icon and pressing a button to start an event didn’t really add that much. You could restart an event quickly but they really didn’t make clear how you go about it.

Some quality of life updates would have gone a long way. Fast travel to events, a clearer direction system and a bit more variance in random events only found by driving would have made a big difference.

There was generally a lot of rubberbanding in the Burnout games, especially because of how they'd do a slow-mo crash animation and how long it'd take to get back up to speed. They probably extended that to Paradise too where you may have missed a turn.

It's why an online Burnout would be really tough to get right; after one crash you'd end up so far behind the rest that it'd be near impossible to catch back up.

Is getting the urge to reinstall and start over Skyrim every 6 months but not actually doing it a medical condition?

Ha ha ... I was looking at my backlog and was thinking "I'd rather play Skyrim". Great feeling of immersion in that game and just beautiful music. It's a very laid back, atmospheric and relaxing game. The only other game that comes close for me is Breath of the wild. Witcher 3 etc just feel like work.

Can you replay boss fights "immediately" or must you replay a load of stuff to get back to them ? That's one thing I appreciated in the recent Prince of Persia game, you could replay the boss fight immediately.

It has Souls-style checkpoints but they’re usually right beside the boss arena.

It has clicked for me in a way PoP didn’t - the combat is exponentially more satisfying in Nine Sols IMO, though PoP is definitely more of a Metroidvania / exploration game. I just thought the combat in PoP got in the way of the exploration too often. Whereas the purer combat focus here suits me better. I think plenty will feel the opposite though.

That's good. I hate having to replay for ages to get another shot at a boss. Definitely will add to the wish list.

BTW what platform are you playing it on and what frame rate ?

I’m playing on PC / Steam Deck - an easy 144fps on the former, and a stable 60 on the latter - though it’s definitely a game that benefits from a very high refresh rate.

A friend is playing on Switch and has said it’s a bit framey at times, which actually impacts gameplay given the precision required.

I really need to get past that first boss as I can feel it's going to brill once I do it.

I do have Nine Sols in my backlog, metroidvania + Sekiro sounds right up my street, but got a little burned out on metroidvanias last year having gone through a few of them.

Thinking JRPG next, have 2 in the backlog I’m thinking of that I’ve never gone through, either FFXII or Xenoblade Chronicles 3.

Can't go wrong with either. The zodiac edition of FF12 improves it massively but it is a game you should do all the side quests and hunts in, makes it a lot more fun as you'll be under levelled and have no fun if you mainline the story.

Sekiro is hard. Really hard IMO.

I had to give up on it, it was just frustrating me too much. Things like enemies moving in unnatural ways to avoid hits etc were rage inducing .😕

I absolutely loved Sekiro. It’s possibly my favourite FromSoftware game - that parry mechanic with the aggressiveness of Bloodborne was a fantastic challenge. It’s definitely hard, especially because you have no option but to learn its central mechanic, but there was a fight for me when it sort of clicked and became as much a rhythm game as anything else. And mikiri countering is essential, there was one enemy type doing my absolute head in until I realised I could mikiri counter one of their attacks which made the whole thing much easier.I'd absolutely love a sequel.

Sekiro is incredibly hard... until it isn't. Once the combat clicks with you (and it can take several hours and usually up to one particular gate-check boss fight), the combat nearly becomes the least difficult part of the game.

The first few hours of the game is like wax on, wax off, or painting the fence. But when you're up against Mr.Miyagi, you realise what you've been learning and how to really apply it.

It's my favourite combat system of all time. No faffing around with builds, no keeping up a combo meter, no pressing a button to slow time... just a good ol' clash of steel.

Nine Sols is on my hitlist for the next few months. Just need to decide whether to go Steamdeck or PS5, then hopefully I'll get to it in the next month or two.

My eldest's favourite FromSoft game also and he's still waiting on DLC for it nevermind a sequel. 🙂 I'd pick Bloodborne over it but yeah, Sekiro is brilliant and brutal (until you get the hang of the parry and counters). This new Nightreign game seems to have some combat elements from Sekiro in it too I think, will be interesting to see Fextralife's take on it.

It’s why I love it, once you get the hang of what you’re doing, the game does an exceptional job of testing that ability in a variety of different fights. And the absolute focus on one mechanic made the last boss the most memorable one for me in all the From games - everything you’ve learned put to the absolute limit over one gruelling encounter.

Man, I couldn’t nearly go and start it all over again!

Sekiro takes the longest to click. You'll be frustrated all the way up to the fight at the top of the pagoda and thinking the game is janky and unfair but that's because you are playing it all wrong.

And then you get to the boss and he will absolutely stomp you for a day or two straight. But if you stick with it you'll slowly learn how to parry properly and realize the parry window is actually quite large. And you'll eventually beat him and it's like being able to see the matrix "I know how to parry". And at that stage the game is just magnificent. Way better than bloodborne imo with its wishy washy parry mechanic, dodgy framerate and being too easy once you beat vicar Amelia.

Nine Sols is similar. First major boss is a skill check but vital to teach you how to play. Once you get it, it’s sublime.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 36,713 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Not only that, but compared to other FromSoftware games where you have a bunch of different builds and so boss fights can be easy or hard depending on whether your build suits it or not, all the bosses in Sekiro are designed purely for this combat system. Sure, you have a few tools at your disposal to give you a bit of an edge, but for the most part all the bosses, whether they be guy with sword or giant ape who throws his poo at you, are all designed for that one combat style.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,792 ✭✭✭McFly85

It’s easy before you beat Amelia if you do everything else you can do beforehand, first time I did that fight I was hilariously over levelled. The Old Hunters was the best challenge after then.

I actually like the parry mechanic though, and I think it’s hindered a bit by the crappy frame rate. A 120FPS patch would do wonders for it(I’ve been wanting a 60fps patch for so long but we’re well past that now!)

Actually yeah the Old Hunters DLC is a massive jump in difficulty and a nice challenge other than Orphan of Kos who can go **** themselves. Toughest From boss until the Elden Ring DLC. I didn't realize you could go to the Hag area before Amelia so was a little under levelled but it was a great fight so it wasn't annoying.

The parry mechanic in Bloodborne would be fine if not for one my bigger issues with the game; too many bosses being large beasts. Parrying is so ineffective and difficult against most bosses and enemies that it makes it kind of useless in most of the game. Whereas some of the more humanoid bosses and enemies (Gascoigne, Logarius, Lady Maria, Gehrmann, OoK, other hunters), parrying works incredibly well.

Shuhei Yoshida actually said in an interview yesterday that he thinks the reason nothing has been done with Bloodborne is that it's so precious to Miyazaki that he doesn't want anyone else to do it, but he's also so busy that he can't really get it done, so Sony have never really pushed him on it either.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,128 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

He is probably right. The Bluepoint remake of Demon's Souls murdered the original game artistically and From are still a very small company so can only really focus on one or two projects and a remaster of a relatively new game won't sell as well as a new project.

I got as far as some butterfly woman boss and I had to give up after about the 50th attempt to beat her!

I am looking forward to giving Sniper Elite Resistance a go at the end of the month. My enemies will have their balls blown off.

Who are you Butters. Did you not watch the South Park episode. You never shoot somebody in the balls.

    She was optional.

But also not as hard as the boss at the top of the pagoda.

  • Administrators Posts: 55,771 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

DOn't think I got as far as that other boss you mention.

Yea she was optional but not gonna lie, even the random grunts in the game were killing me regularly! 😂

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,128 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I beat her before I met that boss. He is another level of insanity. And I think everyone has trouble with the grunts before her. On the other hand when you go back there in New Game plus and have your true Ronin skills it's insane how easy you find it.

That boss on the Pagoda is the major skill check and I think it took one or two days for me to best him. And lots of swearing which helps.
