Cost to replace TRV

I've to sort a plumber to replace a TRV valve, it looks to be leaking at the pin. Called the plumber already but forgot to ask a price. He said he'd drain the whole system, approximately how much am I looking at paying?

No need to fully drain the system. Drop the pressure, turn off the other side of the rad, quickly swap valve, job done. This assumes that the radiator tail is ok, if the tail needs changing the rad might need to be drained.

Yeah, had read myself that there's generally no need to drain but I can only go by what he said. Either way, any idea on costs? It has to be done, I'm just trying to figure out an approximate cost so I don't fall over if it ends up being €600 to fix a slight leak in a spare room! 😂

If it's a job you don't feel comfortable DIY'ing? I'd expect to pay the call out fee, whatever his min labour charge is, probably 1hr and €15 for TRV.

If you give it a go yourself? €15

Ah, generally I'd give things a go but not a fan of messing with anything water related, unless I have to.

Most TRV pins have a gland nut. Tighten that nut 1/8 turn or so, it should stop the leak.

Ok, there was a bit more play in it, went another 1/4 turn and it's seem to have done the trick!

I'll leave the TRV top off and keep an eye on it over the next few hours. Thanks everyone!

Just check that the pin can still be depressed (it can take a fair bit of effort to push it in normally).

it might be best to fit the new tail into the radiator that comes with the TRV as that one looks like it might be leaking or has leaked in the past.

Got this sorted today, €100. Got a handyman from the local newspaper, was out to me within 24 hours and took him about 30 minutes, didn't need to drain the whole system.
