    Ok, bit of a story...

My son has autism and the associated very narrow interest range, practically nothing. He recently mentioned sampling. I thought great and told him to look up what is needed and I will get it for him. He didn't, just left it. His therapist advised that if we were prepared to take a financial gamble we could get the equipment, put it in front of him and see if he will engage with it. No problem with that.

So what would I need to get? And what basically is sampling?

Just reading what I posted I'm not looking for sampling equipment for or more suited to a person with autism, just your everyday gear that anyone would use.

Out of nowhere he came back to me and said he wants FL Studio. Anyone any experience of this? A number of versions cost approx €100 - 500. Of course he wants the most expensive.

Would anyone advise on which version to buy? Any tips generally for someone who doesn't know what they are doing (me)?

    Hi,

Sorry you got no traction with your posts. I'm only seeing it now. I tried FL studio about 25 years ago. I'm sure it's changed quite a bit since then but the core functionality would be the same I'd imagine.

I personally diched it for Propperlerheads Reason. For me FL was a little to loop based. I know it's in the name but I found it a tad restrictive and I didn't flow very well with it.

I find Reason to be more sample friendly. Especially since I upgraded to 13. They have implemented a lot more functionality in the transport bar and track editor.

Whatever DAW you land on, I'd strongly encourage you son to watch a bunch of YouTube videos to get going with it. These newer DAWs have a lot going on in them and it can be a steep learning curve at the beginning.

I hope it works out for him. Let us know how it goes.
