BMD records question

    Perhaps a very basic question.

I am trying to fully understand the BMD scans that are available on irishgenealogy.ie. Am I correct in understanding that they are transcripts for central records in Dublin of original records that were kept locally? And the Roots website is the only source of transcripts of the local records?

I have a record of my grandmothers wedding. Everything lined up with what my father knew except the grooms name is in the Grooms father’s box as opposed to the actual father’s name. This could be a copying error? Or maybe he wasn’t present

Also if I order a certificate of this what am I getting? The same record that is online or is their an actual civil cert (as opposed to a line in a record book).

I see there are research copies and also actual copies for certificates.ie. What’s the difference

In addition is it possible there is a church cert from the day? Perhaps it’s outside pure genealogy but I like the idea of a record that perhaps those present on the day signed to share with family. Such a record might be nice to frame and might encourage them to get a little involved in helping. I thing people like to see something real as opposed to dates and lines on a computer.

(Is there a way of only searching the genealogy sub forum and not all of boards?)

Also I don’t like making new treads for every q. I wonder is it worth having just one tread for basic chat and q?

It could be a copying error, it could have ben an error by the priest or whoever filled in the details.

There is quite likely to be a church record of the marriage, though many churches do not respond to requests for certs as they are severely understaffed. Worth a try though, possibly with a donation.

I don't believe there is any concept of local versus central copies. The GRO is in Roscommon these days.

The father not being present would not stop him being recorded - dead fathers are recorded. Errors do occur, including at the actual time of the initial event - could have been written down wrong from day 1.

If you order a cert, you get a print out of the scan from the central records, which is what's online. Research cert is not valid for use for other documentary purposes, official cert is - the content is the same. You get the line from the registers you see online, printed on a nice heavy weight, green page.

The church probably has a record of the wedding and can provide you with a new issue cert from that details, expect to pay or be asked for a donation to the parish. They nearly - but not always - have the fathers names recorded; some have incredible levels of detail - dates and locations of baptism, communion, confirmation all sometimes turn up.

Thank you. Ah okay i wasn’t sure if there was some sort of different cert from the day. I don’t think I need to go ordering a cert so given what is online.

I’ll have to think about contacting the church. Might wait until I know if there is anything else I would like to ask them for and be very selective.

Yes I could definitely see how an error could be made as names are written in a couple of places. In my case though names repeat so often it could be a grandfather also. Although it sounds like they recorded the father regardless of him being there.

Where the father is named on Irish marriage records they don't generally take account of whether he is present or not - rather he is named because the form requires him to be so named.

While there's no problem starting threads for each new query you have there is also an off topic thread if you'd prefer.

To search the Genealogy forum, first do a general search and then type and select the word Genealogy in the Category box and press Filter and that should return only results from this forum.

Just to add what others have said: a copy cert from the church will be created now from the register so you won't see something the actual participants signed.
