Yep and you can pre cool in the summer if you know it's been sitting in the sun.

A colleague getting his first ev next week I told him that's the feature he will love the most.

Ahh very good. Won't have to worry about the summer too much if the last few are anything to go on.

I’d be putting the other one in the garden 😳

Not a chance... The g30 will get abused over the next few years by the wife and family and the e46 will be minded and still be worth a few quid.

I’d apply for planning to widen the vehicular entrance and out the 2 in the garden 😂

I know a guy that can sort your planning 😉😬👍

Haha that's in the pipeline for April hopefully so should be sorted.

get your planning in now, it takes about 4 months before you can start the works.

You may also need to apply to Dublin City Council for vehicular dishing. Basically if you want to reduce the big kerb on the footpath down to a small kerb as your driveway will now be wider.

That’s done after the planning is granted SK no point doing that now.

    Hey lads,
I’m looking at a 530e/181 to buy from Japan. Should I have any concerns? Basically, I want to do this to gain experience with car importing since I’ve never done it before. The car currently has 55k km on the clock and would cost me roughly €22k to ship it to Ireland, including all taxes, VRT, etc. That is the price of the cheapest 530e on donedeal currently with the millage way higher.

I calculated the VRT, and I’m a bit shocked that it’s only €2,600. However, I’m not getting too excited, as the boys at Revenue might add some extras... I went through this thread, and it seems that for the next 50k km, I shouldn’t worry too much about decreasing battery life. I’m assuming it has already lost about 10% of its battery life, so I guess within the next 50k km, it might lose another 20% or so. This would give me about three years of use, as I drive approximately 15-20k km per year.

Has anyone imported a Japanese 530e themselves? I also read that it will need the charging port replaced—any idea what the cost of that might be?

Why would you import a €20k+ car to gain experience? If you want to gain experience you should import a cheap car.

And instead of importing all the way from Japan, you might get a better deal by negotiating hard with a private seller here

Also remember you will have zero warranty on the battery/drivetrain whereas an Irish/UK car would still have warranty

For what its worth, I’ve imported a 330e and a 530 Active Hybrid from Japan. Still waiting for them to sell but will definitely make several thousand in profit between them. But I got them both cheap from auction.

My mate buys Jap imports locally from private sellers and often gets them cheaper than I do importing them

I need to change my old car; it's been quite a while now. Since I have to do that, I thought, why not upgrade and buy a Japanese import as well? I would like to do the paper work myself, so I am up for a little challange. 😂

Would you mind PM me what you have for sale? What website do you use for bidding?

€2600 sounds low. Have you allowed for customs etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7 croppeq96

I should of expressed myself better €2600 is just the VRT itself

I didn't import mine but i am the first owner of it over here. 182 with 56k on it have had it 5 months now and love it. The charging plug is not a big deal mines a third party and it works just fine.

You will also need to get it converted to European maps ect there's a company on Dublin that will do that for you. I still haven't done mine as I am using apple car play but I will get it all done this year.

Just get the highest spec one you can get. Kg you're going to all the bother of doing it yourself the better the spec the more value it will hold. They are head and shoulders above most Irish cars for extras.

Yeah, I have been on a lookout for car purchase for a year already, and I’m overwhelmed by the number of baseline options available on the Irish market. Have you gotten a quote for the EU maps installation for your 530e?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,157 ✭✭✭jayo44

In around 400 to change everything over. It's not just the maps that have to be changed the connected drive features don't work either it can't connect to the network and to you won't be able use the mobile app.

Register on bmw.jp, that should work, another way I am not 100% on is to

try change the country in the app/car

type 1 charger or a type 2 to type 1 cable is what you need, don't worry about the socket on the car,

I would compare like for like, when I got my 3 series a few years ago for 18k vrt etc. included, I checked done deal for the same and they were 28k, funny thing was they were also Japanese imports.

Battery degradation is not a problem,

The car does about 20 to 30 km on electric and about 40 mpg on petrol, 15000km suggests to me that you have longer commutes than 20/30 km, work place charging might be required.

The Vrt calculation is fairly accurate in my experience, they wont go after extras on a 7 year old car.

As for warranty, I would keep any savings you made for repairs, if it breaks down your covered if not then happy days,

Aim for something with a little higher km, 80 to 100k km and a few dents and scratches will bring the price down,

Japan has kinda the same system as the UK car registrations, so the next few months more cars will be bought and sold, more choices at auction and cheaper prices.

Your 5 series is going to cost you around 13k and that is the extent of your gamble, the rest is paid here and is safe.

Looks like i'll be driving one of these as a company car for a while- I've never had a plug in hybrid so would be grateful if someone could point out the basics- can i plug it in and charge it at home? If so what kind of range does it get on a charge

Range will depend on what year it is and battery capacity. Also will depend on what time of year it is 🥶🥶🥶

assuming its a 0-3 year old model, you’ll get from ~30km in winter to ~40km in summer on battery alone. You can plug in the ‘granny’ charger on a normal socket and charge fully in about 5 hours. Or half that or less time on home EV charger. If driving around town or in stop start the battery being charged makes for an extra smooth and snappy drive away from lights etc. of course you don’t actually have to charge the battery, but the petrol tank is relatively small so it’s a good habit to be in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,483 ✭✭✭✭road_high

that’s great- it’s the newer model alright I think I read somewhere it can do up to 100km in on a charge but am dubious about that of course. I don’t have a charging port at home as I never had electric plug in before so if I can charge from a normal socket that will do me for the time being. It’ll have to be an extension lead out the window!
Sounds like a great way of saving on fuel for the short runs around town like going to the gym or shops

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,483 ✭✭✭✭road_high

Is there a fuel gauge for the electric battery and the petrol tank? Can you switch between the two modes or does the car just automatically do that and switches on we to the petrol engine once that runs out? I assume it also some kind of mild hybrid system drawing energy from the motion and braking?

  • Subscribers Posts: 17,117 ✭✭✭✭copacetic

ah sorry, if it’s the very latest model brand new you will get significantly more range, as you say 90-100km. This is enough range to consider a charger as this will take more like 9-12 hours to fully charge the bigger battery. You get a battery gauge and a fuel gauge and you can switch between modes with a button, but generally people just leave it to decide for itself in hybrid mode

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,483 ✭✭✭✭road_high

Yes I’ll see how I go on with it. How much is a home charger to fit roughly? How much would it be to charge at one of those chargers you see around the place? Do you get a card or app or something to do that? Sorry I’m very clueless about all this but willing to trial and error. But it sounds like a good way to go and it’s in the lower tax band of course too

Charging in public is more or less same price as petrol, not enough of a saving to bother even if there is any. I never once charged PHEV at public charger when I had one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,483 ✭✭✭✭road_high

I suppose so. Did you have a proper home charger or did you charge in a standard plug?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,912 ✭✭✭Buddy Bubs

3 pin plug when I had the 530e.

I have a proper EV charger now though, 7kwh at home and access to 11kwh ones in work.

Thank you. Any idea how long and how much that cost per charge with the 3 pin at home?
