Swapped back in the saddle I swapped out two days ago.

At least it gave me the opportunity to properly clean and regreased the saddle clamp, a job I declined to do when taking this saddle off in the first place.

Rear wheel needed truing, nothing too bad, block just touching on one side, twiddled with a spoke key then gave up. Contacted Joe Daly’s yesterday to book it in. Brought up late this morning, ready about three o’clock this afternoon. Fantastic service! ‘man Dave!

Switched out the 42cm bars for carbon 38cm. Was able to reuse the bar tape also.

What's the logic with narrower bars.. aero gains?

I have 38cm on mine, not a small guy, just find it more comfortable. I am looking at narrower, potentially 36cm. I just feel like I am MTBing when I jump on a bike with 44cm. I suppose it is technically an aero gain but I would say it is marginal for someone like me. Old school measurements, I should be on 44cm but I just don't feel comfortable.

I also prefer it for racing, feels safer squeezing through gaps, just an opinion though, the bars are shielded by my body mass and arms.

Decided to show the commuter a bit of love a, 12 year old btwin triban 500. New chain, hopefully caught the cassette in time, but have a spare cassette anyway. New 25mm back gatorskin and brake pads all round. stripped and cleaned the rear derailleur jockey wheels while i was at it. Wimped out last week commuting in the ice, so first commute of 2025 tomorrow

Checking the size of the lower headset bearing so my mechanic could order one for me. It seems like it's a more pressing issue than I first thought 😄

Installed latex tubes. Ride quality is better and I got a few PRs on segments I've done dozens of times, and got 9th overall on one segment.

Was in a hurry to install the new headset bearings in the bike, so naturally I spent 25 minutes trying to figure out what was wrong, after not taking the time initially to notice I was putting the top bearing in upsidedown 😭

Never trust the work that went before you, especially if it's your own...

What brand did you go for and where did you get them. Was thinking about trying these also.

Combined a lunchtime spin with picking up new brake blocks for the classroom bike and grabbing a coffee (and nearly getting run over, but that's for a different thread)

New block installed on the Cadex, we'll see if they need fettling on the next spin.

Swapped out the 105 50-34 for a GRX 46-30. Even got the 105 FD working fine with the setup, only had yo adjust the high screw.

One minor issue im having now is when the bike is 40 and small chain ring, the chain jumps off the lower jockey wheel. Dunno if its from not removing additional links to accommodate the change or if the jockey wheel is worn out. Wasn't occurring before anyway

i'd have assumed that chain length issues would happen at the extremes of gearing - big to big or little to little, but not necessarily little to big?

if it was chain length related, that issue should be happening at other gear combos too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 131 ✭✭Bluejohn1

I have an older ultrega chain which was a link or two shorter. Threw it on and it seems to have resolved the issue. Didn't count the links for either chain, but I remember the ultrega one being sized for a 50-34 11-34, so maybe 113/114 links.

As @magicbastarder said, if I tried jumping from lowest gear to the big ring on the ultrega chain the whole groupset would freeze up(with the 50-34). The newer chain only had one link or none removed.

The star ratchets of the DTSwiss freehub needed regreasing, and having picked up a tube of Special Grease, I started in at it this evening.

While I was doing it, though, I decided to do the other bits that needed doing, so chain and cassette off and into the ultrasonic cleaner, rear derailleur off, stripped and cleaned.

But now I've run out of time to do the actual job, so it'll have to wait till tomorrow.

New rear derailleur on the youngest fella's bike.

Gave the new derailleur hanger alignment tool a go, but I think it needs a new hanger too

Still waiting on a set of tyres from bike inn, supposed to be here yesterday, now there's no delivery date given

It is, but it might be easier to replace the hanger

Not sure if this counts but I have had a pair of Oakleys for over 10 years and last year the lenses coating stated to peel/flak badly and the sleeves plastic was very sticky. Priced some new ones and nearly 200 euro so new lenses and sleeves purchased for around 50€ and good as new. Tested this evening and really should have replaced the parts years ago when the first signs of wear showed, while the lenses are a different brand I can't get over how clear they are to see view!

Not my bike, a friend's bike.

Asked me to give it a service...

New drive chain on the commuter, it has a lot of miles done and worn to bits, chain had snapped twice before the overhaul. New chainring, chain, cassette and jockey wheels:

The state of the new vs old chainring

Replaced a set of crank arms and pedals for the first time because I'm an idiot and didn't properly tighten the originals on the new bike…one bent out and popped off after about 40km, the other was bent most of the way there when I checked, both had destroyed the threads. 🤦

Had great plans to swap out BB, chainrings, jockey wheels and shift cables last night. Much to my dismay as I removed the cranks I found my Rose CRX actually had a press-fit BB rather than the threaded BB I was so sure it had for some reason. Other bits done and new BB and tools ordered so hopefully finish the job next week. Old BB bearings on the drive side are totally knackered and wobble about freely so long overdue. In retrospect, nabbing my Strava June Gran Fondo in the hills last Saturday was probably not the smarted move.

A question for the gurus here on shimano jockey wheels. They're marked as tension and guide, with direction arrows for mounting, and I made sure to install them approriately having read some descriptions of their functions. However, I can't for the life of me see the difference between them. They're the same size, width and tooth count from what I can see, and also appear entirely unidirectional. Can anyone enlighten me on the difference between them? Back pedalling in some gear combos locks the chain on the derailleur cage, but I suspect that could be because the manky BB is doing bad things to the chain line.

Also considering whether I should swap out the rear mech which has had 10 years of good service with no shortage of muck and gravel. Currently an 11 speed Ultegra 6800 which isn't too easy to come by. From what I'm reading Ultegra 8000 is a compatible replacement, anyone try this and have any issues?

The upper jockey wheel (guide) has bearings which allow play side to side. The lower one (tension) doesn't. Tension wheels with some group sets have teeth offset a bit.

Old press fit BB removed and nw one installed over lunch today. Also swapped out the old 6800 rear mech with a new 8000 series. A few more minor jobs still to do but bike up and running again which is great.

I've come to understand the loathing out there for press-fit bottom bracets, a serious amount of hammering to get the old one and a bit sketchy lining the shell up on the two sides installing the new one. Not loving that the BB is plastic either, though the old one did last well to be fair. Will definitely be sticking to threaded BBs on any future bikes.
