Immigration and Ireland - MEGATHREAD *Mod Note Added 14/08/25*

@Necro are we allowed discuss statistics regarding immigration in other countries especially if said data is not collected here or released here?

Are we allowed discuss policy and law changes we'd like implemented in Ireland or the EU?

I welcome this new direction for the immigration thread, the other one had become very constrained in recent times.

I also look forward to the posts and discussion about the wider implications of the current high immigration into this country which is putting huge stresses on already under pressure services.

Interesting article popped up on twitter. As usual it's probably the tip of the iceberg but fair play to the Indian authorities for tackling these crooks.

I have a question about EU immigrants (not non-EU immigrants, bogus AS or refugees).

My question is about EU immigrants who stay beyond three months, and can't support themselves.

We know the following:

(1) a fairly large amount of the homeless are EU immigrants, 22% is the recent figure for adults

(2) in terms of homeless families, the largest homeless hub for families is the Houben hub

(3) EU citizens can come here for three months, but after that there are conditions, see below:

You can enter Ireland and stay here for up to 3 months (6 months if you are looking for a job) without restriction. If you plan to stay more than 3 months, you must either:

• Be enrolled as a student or vocational trainee or
• Be a family member of an EEA or Swiss citizen in one of the previous categories.

(4) I am reminded of the Jozef Puskas case, where he was not working, and lived in a 5-bedroom house in Mucklagh, outside Tullamore

My questions are:

1. Does the State actively remove EU citizens who don't meet the above criteria? (I doubt it, but would like to know more)

2. If not, should we remove EU citizens who don't meet the above criteria?

3. I feel we could reduce the homeless numbers by removing the German and Romanian families from Ireland, mentioned in the above article, and any other EU families who can't support themselves.

Our controls when it comes to documentation etc upon entering the country are nowhere near stringent enough

All you have to do is have a brother or other family member who is working here and that means you are a family member of an EEA citizen in one of the previous categories and you can swan around to your heart's content.

I also get the impression it's not enforced by any real means. In my local area there would be a few homeless from Poland and other eastern countries where they speak Russian to eachother.

I would say on the balance of the EU we get less homeless relocating here then France, Italy, Spain etc because of the weather. When I was at the euros in France I met a fair few polish homeless.

I would say though considering our precarious financial situation we should be selfish and look to deport anyone we're entitled to from other EU countries. But yeah don't hold your breath when you see how deportations are handled here.

With migrant crime rates rising in Germany ,Sweden and the UK to take 3 examples ,one has to wonder is Ireland any different? Prison population of migrants does not appear to be any different.I wonder are non committal crimes or those of asylum seekers overrepresented .There are no stats for these too sensitive to produce I suppose. Ireland is less vocal on the matter.

Maybe until we have the migrant level of Sweden something will change , a population of 10 million 2 million are born abroad.

I disagree. The mods have just opened this debate up for discussion which was difficult in the previous thread.

It has been reported many times by the likes of Courts News that Judges knock a bit off foreigners prison sentences.

The Judges justify it by stating that the foreigner will have a harder time in an Irish prison.

However, maybe there is some study out there that looks at a massive sample?

George Soros has invested before. I'm sure there's a list you can find online. I remember hearing years ago how some American philanthropist was secret putting huge amounts into Irish universities and when he died he'd left a fund to continue donating. Anyone know his name? I think he had Irish routes.
