Cold commute yesterday and today. But have to say I’m loving it. Looks like another cold one tomorrow with some light rain in the early afternoon. Still beats driving in heavy traffic!

Delightful day on the bike. Sun, no wind or rain.

Evening! i cycled to work at about 7:30am this morning... as I approached town the frost cover increased and it was a little sketchy in parts.. the back wheel lost grip at one point..

beautiful, crisp morning but definitely a bit sketchy.. how did u guys find it?

i was out walking a while ago and a couple of patches of pavement were verrry slippy....

It might clean the bike after the muck collected on my way to work!

Made it home with no rain and a tailwind for a good bit of the way as I passed long queues of non-moving traffic - one of those nice commutes 👍

Crosswind for me, which is still infinitely better than a headwind

wicked headwind this evening but it dried the road up at least. first commute today in a while after Ive had some hip and quad strains and really enjoyed it.

    Hi,

I hope you all had a nice Christmas...

I am getting the bike ready for a commute tomorrow ..

Obviously we are in a cold snap, so frost, possible ice, sleet / snow are all possible....

My commute is along the coast by Raheny & Clontarf and up to Sandyford...

How are you guys feeling about commuting tomorrow?

Main roads will be gritted but housing estates will be dodgy.

Gritted roads are of limited value to cyclists. It only takes one patch of ice at the point where you're cornering or braking and you're screwed basically.

I think you can judge it by your local conditions. as your whole journey is along the coast, quite likely that there won't be ice.

Commute away. We can't shut down the entire country for a few inches of snow. Madness.

you'll be commuting on your bike tomorrow, so?

I am going to see how it looks at about 7am ... often walking around outside will give u an idea..

Yeah I commuted in on a bike this morning, about 7km in north Dublin city. You'd need to be very careful and be fully clued in to the road ahead. The roads were gritted but because of all the rain there were some icy areas. In all honesty probably not the smartest move but with schools back this morning that makes driving pretty much not an option.

I came in by bike last Thursday, Friday and this morning. It hasn't been too bad in honesty a few icy patches but just took it very slow. Getting out of the estate was the worst part, main roads and along the canal were fine.

Coming over the lock bridges in Hanover quay was interesting to say the least.

Did 15km myself from the northside over to the southside, roads seemed absolutely fine until I got to RTE, bit of ice on the cycle track around did.

Was at 08:30am mind you, so a lot of what you were seeing might have melted by then.

Lads/ladies ... I am glad you got to work safely... I drove this morning & was tempted to cycle..

but another thing I have noticed in the last couple of years is, that if it is cold, frosty and even with patches of ice.. i dont enjoy the cycle as much, as i am constantly on my guard for black ice or losing traction.. for me it takes the enjoyment out of cycling...

the heated seats and being able to listen to a podcast, while driving, was nice, & the traffic wasnt too bad... but driving to work in heavy traffic, for me, is demoralising!

Seems that icy conditions are forecast until Thursday?

Cycled the last few days but hate going through the Phoenix Park when it's frosty as the OPW never grit/salt and it can be lethal. Took a bad spill a couple of years ago at the Park Gate St roundabout when it wasn't even that frosty, was like an ice rink.

The alternatives of Chapelizord or Navan Road/Blackhorse Avenue however are horrible but safer in the frost so will try that tomorrow. Was fairly nervous going through this morning (06:30) as large puddles to the side of the cycle track were frozen over and areas looked glossy. This evening there was a biting wind (bhí nimhe sa gaoithe) and while I usually avoid those cursed raised ramps for the Dublin Bus stops there was a constant line of speeding cars passing the first one so ventured over it and felt the front tyre loose traction.

I don't want to jinx my commute home this evening but my 13km commute this morning was chilly but absolutely fine.
Strangely for this weather, I felt I had overdressed

Yes and much higher higher looking than that, probably 30cm or thereabouts. Ridiculous and dangerous things with 3 each side of Chesterfield avenue for a bus that's present probably 3% of the day but the obstacles are 100%. Couldn't understand why they didn't have the bus pull to the existing kerb and into the cycle lane where cyclists could overtake the bus if present like what's currently in place with the hop on hop off tour buses that go through the park and have separate bus stops.

Ah yes. Those ramps can be icy when the adjacent asphalt isn't, for the same reasons that bridges can be icy when the road either side isn't: Why do bridges ice before the rest of the highway? | HowStuffWorks

You'd think the people who design this stuff would have thought of that.

I said as much on here a couple of years ago (can't find the thread now) and was told that the ramps weren't metal.

    Spoiler alert: they're metal.

Considering cycling from D24 into the city centre tomorrow. First time on a bike since before Christmas!

Anyone spun through Templogue, Terenure, Rathgar, Rathmines over the past few days? How was it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,065 ✭✭✭Arequipa

    I am considering commuting tomorrow . ..

if I go . .. the plan is to leave earlier & to take it easy particularly when going around corners...

looks like no rain..so there should be no additional icy stretches

I managed to hit the deck this morning walking, before I even got to the end of my drive (about 10 feet), so think I’ll give the bike a miss tomorrow….
