I was behind someone like that one time and it wasn't even a new car they had the indicator on for more then 10k. From one town to the next in the west so not like the two towns were close to each other.

Lol that's what they want you to believe, moving up, moving on to PCP ! 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,398 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

Yeah but many don't even have it to buy these new cars on PCP……..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,398 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

I'd love to get into government and one of the things I'd do is ban the year on the reg of a car and make car dealers show the amount of tax that is paid to the government and show the cost of the car without tax.

Carbon tax scrapped on all energy and excise halved on all liquid fuels.

    Next, I'd ban PCP.

I'd charge all cars over 1500 Kg 1000 a year motor tax and all cars over 1800 Kg 2000 a year.

All parking fees would triple for SUV.

VRT go to 60% on all cars from 1800 Kg and more, more than 1500 mm wide a further 500 a year tax.

Reduce taxes on small lighter cars and cars with small lower powered engines.

I'd charge 10,000 on each new EV for battery disposal at EOL factored into new cost of car.

    " is that many "

If you want to give something a rest, stop telling me what I should say and think and do and telling me what to do in general, please for 2025 make it your mission to just put me on your ignore list on boards.

You've no idea what money people have or don't have. Stop pretending you do.

Outside of my own household I haven't a clue who is wealthy and who isn't and either do you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,798 ✭✭✭carsfan2

why post on a thread about new cars on a motors forum when you appear to dislike and disapprove of people spending money as they deem appropriate to their own circumstances?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,398 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

Lol the stats show themselves, most cars bought with PCP , the rest bank loan, HP, Credit union, not that many bought with cash.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,398 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

Their own circumstances are debt and more debt, that's reality , go look at the statistics at how cars are funded in Ireland.

Who cares? I just bought a 52k car on a 4 year 0% HP, its about 1100 a month. Why would I buy that in cash? I might have access to that cash, I might not, but I'm not paying it upfront at a rate lower than even the most paltry bank deposit rate.

I put a 500 holding deposit on it but not putting a penny more upfront. I'd need my head examined if I did.

It's over 1800kg so I should be paying 2000 in tax. I suppose it's an SUV so triple parking for me. I should be paying 60% vrt but luckily it was 7% I think and I even got grants against that.

And it would be liable for a 10000 fee for your battery recycling.

Your posts come across as very bitter.

I'll post a pic when I get it. And the 251 enyaq for 58000 euro which I signed off of finance for a work colleague on Friday. Should be here next week. Again, 0% 4 year HP.

True… But the wealthy drive Lambo's , Ferrari, McClaren etc… Not the 99.99% of new irish car registrations…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,817 ✭✭✭✭banie01

Something that is painfully obvious, but, never occurred to me until the Mrs said it yesterday...

Surely there will be a whole tribe of Gen X folk who will feel a compulsion to upgrade to a new motor in July! What with it being 252 😉

1000s of us suddenly trading in and looking for Atlantic Longwave 252 window stickers and car merch 😁

    S

Scrap the year on the car and large motor tax increases for all of the current lower rates. Electric goes up to say E300 minimum. Petrol E500, Diesel E800. They do this in the netherlands, if you want to drive a filthy polluting diesel, and your aim is to save money because you do big mileage, fine, but youre going to pay for it on the front end, i.e motor tax…

I would tax motoring more and ringfence it, for public transport and related infrastructure, we are like a second world country here in that regard…

Oh and new cars only get 2 years without an nct, four is comedy… Does it take four years for their brakes and tyres to be inspected, I would have thought that would depend on their driving style and mileage, thats another racket, to flog more new cars and support the Irish motoring "industry" Lol…

Not in Ireland they don't. I knew one guy with a Ferrari, he owned a few pubs in my town. Youd see it parked outside them from time to time.

Bought it when he was about 65 and couldn't get in and out of it. Died shortly after.

I know people I imagine are wealthier than him and wouldn't be seen dead in any of them. I wouldn't buy any of them with lotto money to be honest.

Do you know them personally? Another bitter poster because people getting new cars

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,557 ✭✭✭✭Idbatterim

I obviously dont know them and perhaps they did buy it in cash… I do know, some of my mates, are getting new cars on PCP as usually the Mrs wants a newer car, they arent on bad money, but have fcuk all left at the end of the month… Everyone's circumstance is different, but I will hand it to the finance companies and dealerships, PCP is one great racket….

You are right in going for the 0% finance over outright cash too…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,398 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

Yeah I hear ye, look I did the pcp thing myself for long enough so I am not criticising anyone who makes the same mistakes I did but it would be good if people could learn from them instead.

I had all the same reasons to justify PCP but in the end the unjustifiable spending on cars to get from A to B just can't be justified.

You can't deny the size and weight of cars is gone ridiculous ? this trend of bigger and bigger needs to be reversed, we all know it. We can't keep choking up the streets with larger and larger cars, it just can't continue. You probably think your EV is going to save the earth even if it is big and heavy ? come on ffs.

There's no way in hell the tax payer should be subsidising 40-60k + cars.

Leave it for now, thread derailed. I hope to see a nice 251 on my commute tomorrow morning. I haven't seen one yet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 428 ✭✭pale rider

saw my first one today, a Porsche !

Plenty of money in the country and certainly some is going into new cars, I have a car on order and am a cash buyer, I found any talk of finance meant I was paying the full retail sticker price with no negotiation.

PCP is the real "never never" lol, because at year 3 when reality is coming back about the balloon they realise ah **** it, I'll just go again with minimal deposit much the same monthly payments for another 3 years, it is mad, I did it long enough.

I have been mortgage free since age 37 and while I do have a fair bit of disposable income, we are heavily saving for the Boys collage and their deposit for their first house, f1ck cars because having kids made me realise that there's a lot more important things to spend money on than myself an the way the world is now the Boys will need all the support they can get long into the future.

lol those were the days, F1ck Dee Forbes for destroying 252 Khz , she was hell bent on destroying the transmitter and mast and in reality it was partly that corrupt B1tch who was loosing RTE millions not 252 Khz ! Good to see the back of her and ryan.

You have your priorities straight anyway no point in being tied down to a car payment every month. Well done paying off the mortgage and looking out for your kids future not many would do that.

To be fair, Ireland depends heavily on the motor car due to the failure of the Government for decades to provide proper public transport.

I wouldn't increase the tax based on the fuel source but I would increase it based on the size and weight of the vehicles, the size of the cars people are driving now are nuts and also the sheer weight which is bound to have a negative effect on fuel economy.

The Government talk about reducing emissions but the reality is the ICE industry alone is worth about 6 Billion a year to the Tax man. The government solution to reducing emissions is to increase tax on energy ? no this is just a way to increase revenue and it's by adding the year to the reg and the 1/2 to the reg that has promoted even more car sales which increases tax revenue.

I'm not sure on the NCT, I see a lot of people with bald tyres so this should be inspected more I think.

Mobile phone detection is a joke

Now we have more and more digital infotainment systems to distract drivers and digital instrument clusters with endless menus and customisations available while driving. The whole thing is gone mad.

I really don't think we should be subsidising cars costing 40K + though, this means the lower income folk have to subsidise the people capable of buying more expensive electric cars, this is wrong.
