A long day of shocking weather in Dublin for the most part. Agree with others, definitely the worst day here in a while as it's felt like the rain has gone on forever! Oh well, got to capture me second snow this extended winter season so far albeit having to go the mountains as usual - before all the snow tourist chaos I add. Waiting for lying snow in Donaghmede since January 2021 now.

Fourth image is a composite of an image that was mostly destroyed by snowflakes falling and getting on my lens trying to take it at the Hellfire Club so I thought I'd have a little fun with it and make it look christmassy - only 2 weeks late. Even a bit of "yellow snow" funnily enough. Some random drone shots to show the snow line too this morning by Gunny Hill road and Montpelier Hill.

The northeasterly winds were perfect for Balbriggan Lighthouse to get hit by some big waves which I went to later in the evening but I could not feel my hands at all. I was soaked to say the least.

Delighted for all who got epic snow, it's something to treasure as we miss out so often when the hope is there. An abysmal 36 hours here in Dublin, among the worst I can ever recall. The thought of blue skies and sunshine feels like some parallel universe that might exist.

I want nothing more than dry weather now but will be back on the hype train by the time the next weather event lies in wait!

For now I am Dreaming of Sun and then irish sea streamers from a beautiful easterly!

Enjoy the snow those of you that have it

Tuesday night onwards seems to be when the lowest temperatures will be.

I'd love to believe the GFS regarding tomorrow, but I am not convinced. As for how cold it will get and when I am going for -11 or 12 over snowfields somewhere in Tipperary or Kilkenny on Wednesday night. At an official station it will be less, say - 9 or 10. Too low you say...

The difference is that in Quebec the weather is constantly Baltic..from December to May sometimes...I lived there for 18 months…one of the coldest and most populated provinces in Canada....a French speaking paradise with severe winters unlike Europe where snow now is very unusual at sea level even in inland Europe.

Many places in Northern Germany for example haven't seen a flake of snow for years..

Is that where you learnt all your cracking 'snow' jokes?

true, any mention of what the roads are like mallow to cork

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,434 ✭✭✭Cork2021

Which of the models won out this time? Snow for Cork again tomorrow night?

They weren't great earlier but probably need to check in morning really depending if it did actually freeze or not. It will be treated of course.

No real lying snow in Tullamore so headed to Kinnitty then on to the Slieve Bloom Mountains and came home through very heavy snow in Lough Boora.

Status Orange for all of Offaly was ridiculous, 5pm Saturday to 8pm Sunday, so just finishing as I type this. I live in the West of the county and all we got was some rain and sleet, mostly light, no power cuts, no disruption of any kind.

You've had your fun and your snow. Enough is enough. I've several feet of it in my place and I want it gone. 😁

An awful long time to leave the kids out in fairness. The roads would get taken in quicker.

My Celbridge "snow" event. I took readings of dry and wet-bulb temperatures using a sling psychometer and recorded the weather type.

It didn't start snowing until wbt got down to 1.0 °C (very wet snow), switching back to sleet again at 1.0 °C and now rain at 1.7 °C.

Experienced an Ice Storm in Oregon early 2004. It rained all night ( usual for the PNW in January) and I was surprised to wake up to constant thuds. Nearly 2 inches of solid ice were bringing huge tree limbs down.

You literally could not walk out the door for 3 days. As the outdoor steps down the 3 floors to the carpark were coated in ice an inch thick even though they were semi sheltered.

Any chance those showers tomorrow might push further inland?

I am because I want snow ❄️ tomorrow night and it's looking interesting, yellow to possible orange warning could be in store. We shall see

Have to drive Cork to Dublin in the morning. I assume once I can get onto dual carriageway and then the M8 it will all be gritted and ok to drive on? Getting out of my estate on a hill is my first challenge mind. All depends on whether it freezes or not tonight. Roads driven on are pure slush at this stage

Happy for those down south that got snow but pity anyone have to cope with that much snow and disruption with no power for a few days.

Wasn't expecting any lying snow here but thought there would be some snow falling today but apart from some wet snow last night for an hour or so it's been all rain with only an odd snowflake mixed in, south cavan.

Also as others have said earlier in the thread make sure put out plenty of food for the birds during this cold spell as they're hungrier than ever.

separately, in terms of the event, delighted we got snow and it was enough to build a snowman and go sledging (just). But tbh, once it did start to snow around 1.30pm, I did think it would snow longer - all the models suggested as much. Being greedy I know but we really only had periodic flakes from 3.15 onwards. Very few models suggested that. There was no shortage of precipitation when it was falling as rain!

Awful conditions in the midlands really. A few inches of snow on the ground this morning and then it snowed pretty heavily all day on top of it. Main roads full of compacted snow. Plenty of cars getting stuck on the hills - people had to take turns to push each other up. And cars not aware of the situation ahead not being able to stop in time and hitting others. Trees down on roads and power gone. Power due back in the next hour.

Most people not travelling due to the weather warnings, thankfully.

Hopefully it all thaws a bit tomorrow.

Phantom precipitation over the south. Not a drop falling

The M8 will be gritted alright but I imagine it will be a slow drive given the conditions in the midlands.
