I'm enjoying the new feature of when I first visit the site or click on the boards.ie near top left of screen I get shown about midway through trending discussions.

Definitely where I want to start each visit to Boards. Thanks again Vanilla.

(Chrome on Android if anyone gives a flying fúck)

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Dismissing it doesn't seem to remove it from Trending Discussions, even after multiple refreshes:

Same for me on mobile - click a quoted post notification and it brings you to a random page in the thread way back from where your post was quoted - between that and having to use the desktop version on mobile to actually access my notifications it’s beyond useless at this stage

Is uploading images now broke too? All I get is a user:"xxxxxxxxxx.jpg" box where an image should be.

Maybe the size of the file is too big? Could you try taking a screenshot of the photo, cropping that, and try and post the screenshot? It'd be much smaller and may (may, mind you, not will) just work.

This is for logs/guides I always post here, and nothing is different at all about my workflow. I tried it there with a screenshot anyway, same result. Desktop, chrome, W11, all fully updated.

^^ I'm not seeing any embedded pics from other users either, so it's not an uploading issue. It appears to be working fine on mobile (both data AND wifi), so not a connectivity issue. Can anyone else replicate/confirm on desktop?

Getting the below now when posting thread links on other threads. Link still posts but the same pop up box on the bottom left as the X issue.

Vanilla\Formatting\Formats\TextFormat::ensureRaw(): Return value must be of type string, array returned

And your notification brought me back to Nov2021 on this thread 😂 You have to laugh, or you'd cry .

( Interesting that it's moved forward from Oct 2021 🤔)

Sorted now, there's something after happening recently with us.v-cdn.net where it's being flagged for phishing, and as such, blocked. I've added the address there to my exclusions list, and all's well now.

I am unable to see any photos that people upload ?

Are you using a VPN? I get SSL errors sometimes with a VPN.

Wake me up when it's all over.

No i am not using a vpn but issue now seems to have been fixed , no pop up warnings and images load on other threads as back to normal again whatever it was.

Earlier it was mad and not changed anything and seems okay now.

    Cheers if someone fixed it

    Three things:

    1. I started a thread 15 months ago about the insertion point disappearing when typing a post. This is still happening today.
    2. Sometimes when I click into a post that is directly linked, it will bring me to a random page in that thread, miles away from where the post is……e.g. This post is post 1289 on page 26 of the thread but when I click the link it brings me to post 748 on page 15.
    3. Sometimes, a link to a specific post loads (e.g. latest unread post in a thread) and you scroll down through the thread. Suddenly, it will jump back up to the post that loaded first and you have to scroll back down to where you had read up to. It will sometimes do it multiple times, I think the record is 5 or 6 times.

Agree with all of this completely

When reading the site now I have to wait for jumping to settle , and check the beginning of each sentence to ensure the first words are not split and correct if they are .

The page continues to jump then once it settles it won't let you scroll past the initial post it lands on for a while .

Also when refreshing the page it lands either on a page many miles back as in this thread and commented on before , or if you have looked at a recent notification it will keep going back to that .

On a game thread last night it kept happening even when the conversation had moved on a few pages . It made it very difficult for all concerned to keep the flow going .

The jumbled up words at the beginning of sentence has been brushed off by Vanilla it seems as posters writing before page is fully loaded . This may be true but if the page keeps loading for a number of minutes after it should then that is the issue ,not the poster .

I think we have been patient waiting for answers to problems that are ongoing a long long time .

Can you ask Vanilla to address these problems @Boards.ie: Mike ?

Hello all and a very happy new year to you!

I am in constant contact with Vanilla on all of the sites issues including the ones mentioned above. I speak with the support team practically everyday. As much as I wish that I could, I cannot tell Vanilla what to act on and when to do it. They work on an order of priority and relevance to work they are already moving forward with. They have multiple update release issues every year. We are just one of hundreds of larger platforms that they deal with. So frustrating and all as it may be, believe me I am as fed up with this as all of you are, that is the situation we are in. A lot of these issues are not just bugs, they are development issues or new development requests. With Vanilla you have to throw your development suggestion out there and hope it gains some traction to be considered and released on site.

I push the issues that I see or that I am made aware of onto a ticket and add new or relevant information to the tickets that are created when I can. This helps to speed up their work or narrow down on an issue. That is unfortunately as far as my powers extend. I asked Santa for a magic wand for Christmas but no luck unfortunately.

I joined here a little over 2 years ago and I am still taking one step forward and two steps back with site improvement and development. Having said all that I love logging on to this platform. It is uniquely Irish and if you dive down under the hotter topics that create all of the friction there is some wonderful and insightful reading to be found here. There are people who use Boards as one of their very few social outlets and people who want to help others with advice or helpful information. There is still a fantastic sense of community and a proud user base, some of whom have been here for over 20 years. Vanilla is what it is and Vanilla is what we have so I will continue to do my best to push for improvements and keep people coming back here while I can.

    Happy Monday everyone!

Thanks for the reply Mike .

I totally understand and think most posting here understand that it isn't your fault and you can only so much so hope my post did not come across as criticism directed at you.

Vanilla has been a disaster for Boards .ie

Unfortunately it's getting very difficult to.post as in the example I gave above of a free fast flowing over and back like the Christmas game , but we still managed 😂

People still posting here ARE persevering through an awful lot of glitches though and much as I love Boards and the community spirit here , we are losing some really good interesting posters who find other sites faster and less problematic.

Hope you had a good holiday and welcome back 😉

Happy New Year to you too 👍

I clicked on the notification that said "Golden girl mentioned you in just bugs…." just now and it brought me to page 15 of this thread which is from 2021.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,838 ✭✭✭✭Goldengirl

And yours brought me to page 16 😂 I have moved up a page since a few days ago !

Thanks for the update Mike which is understandable and I appreciate you are as much at the mercy of Vanilla as the rest of us.as

At the outset let me state that I am a complete numpty when it comes to technology. One of the more recent issued here is the fact that people are being taken to a page of a thread from hundreds of posts and several years back in time when they click on a link to a new post. That in my view is something that should never happen as it is the most basic function of a forum and it should be a very simple fix. Yet here we are being taken for a ride again by Vanilla. It's like the tail wagging the dog. They appear to call the shots instead of the employer.

If we can't get such a basic function right what hope is there for resolving more complex issues?

Happy New Year to everyone on Boards.

Thanks for the frank update, transparency has also been sorely missing of late and a bit of honesty from the higher-ups goes a long way, something that has also been slipping in recent years (I know, I know, no griping!).

With Vanilla you have to throw your development suggestion out there and hope it gains some traction to be considered and released on site.

Sounds like something that should have been flagged before they decided to make the move. It has honestly been nothing short of a disaster, I'd say the numbers visiting the site have dropped off a cliff compared to, say, 5-6 years ago. It's sad to see for those of us around since the 90s/early 00s.

Fair play to you (and everyone else) behind the scenes who keep the hamsters running in their cages so we can give out about everything!

Happy new year to you and yours, Mike.

An inline formatting menu will show up when you select text. Hit tab to get into that menu.
