Ah i dont have much faith in precipitation/ depth charts. They struggle to get the precipitation right never mind the depth this far out. Could happen for you squarecircles. Hope we all get something other than cold rain!

Never promise snow in Ireland until you see it falling from the sky

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 248 ✭✭Ros4Sam24

Dark clouds moving into north ros now, will see if it’s cold rain or wintry

It would be incorrect to say the models are as good as yesterday, they are not! Gfs, ukmo and Icon all move the border for snow much further North!! What was meant to play out over North Cork is now playing out over Athlone.

AArpege and harmonie is further South. Have I confidence in these, NO

Looks similar to November in terms of how far north the front goes…when it clears South we might get the scraps.

Does seem to be heading in the direction of a washout instead of a whiteout. Borderline event but I guess it could swing back in our favour

As Someone said yesterday, the only way was downgrades from yesterday's charts. West Dublin here praying for a snowfest (for the kids of course 😉)

Interesting looking UKMO for the week ahead with further encroaching lows. The weekend's system is not as far north for Ireland either although it's lights out for southern and eastern england in the main.

The timing of this event is perfect (whatever happens) in that it takes the edge off returning to work after Xmas. The crisp blue sky days will be nice and snow will be a bonus.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Lp wouldn't want to be going much further north anyway that's for sure but knowing our luck.…......hope the models aren't pissing down our backs and telling us it will be snowing.

Long time watcher 1st time poster. The models at the moment are they suggesting any snow for the tallaght area can anyone tell me ? Maybe be too early to ask but just a query on what the models are showing now. Love the snow and live for this type of weather 😀

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 353 ✭✭ThaitaniumM

If the ECM disagrees with the rest of the models and keeps it south...then game still on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,547 ✭✭✭munsterlegend

That would be a big 'If'. I don't expect it to be too much different to the GFS. No matter what the models say the weather will do what it wants anyway. Some places on this island will see snow Saturday and Sunday.

Keep an eye on the higher resolution models from here on in. They produce a much clearer and accurate picture of these type of events as they draw nearer. Models like the Arome, Aperge, etc

I think I’ve given up on cork getting anything now! Aperge is what we need down here. I might get something as I’m in north cork but we shall see

Uk met office paints a very messy picture for Ireland I'm afraid. Rain to heavy wet snow on Saturday before going back to rain through Saturday night due to milder mix and mostly rain on sunday due to added warm Irish Sea factor as the winds turn North easterly as the system exits. Plenty of low temperatures thereafter.

I tend to agree with the more pessimistic assessments. Its far more likely to be a significant upland event, marginal in the hours of darkness elsewhere and will be completely dependent, overall, on the stall line for that LP.

Alan O'Reilly is putting it very well in his latest update, by referencing the certainty that whatever precipitation falls - and we will all see something - its going to freeze rock hard and not thaw for about 5 days, which in a lot of ways is worse than snowfall, for infrastructure and road safety.

Anywhere it does snow, its going to be wet and thick, and when that freezes on transmission lines and trees, it is going to being some of them down.

So, irrespective of snow or no; stock up on extra food and some 5L waters, have plenty of solid fuel and oil in, check on the elderly, check the coolant anti-freeze in the car and replace your washer bottle contents with undiluted screenwash. Get your animals corralled and feed stations brimmed, including insulating drip tanks with fodder and straw if necessary.

And good luck with the return to school on Monday!

    Met Éireann

“At the moment, it’s looking like there could be some significant accumulations in some counties.....Where exactly those counties will be that get the significant accumulations is tough to call at the moment, but it’s looking like it’ll be most likely the midlands and northwest.”

just reading the first couple of pages here. What a potential bust this could all be for a lot of the people here. Literally 2 days ago we were looking at countrywide snow and now it’s seriously marginal. Our climate is a WUM!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 353 ✭✭ThaitaniumM

Ireland has its own sort of fermi paradox. Perfectly positioned to be absolutely marginal all the time. The Earth couldn't just shift us a bit more northerly could it 😁

Don't rule out a more elongated low just yet. We had New Year's Day Storm modelled 48-72 hours out just last weekend.

Latest WRF 5km show a good bit of snow initially then as the warm sector moves up it turns to rain, except in North Midlands,Connaught, Ulster.

I agree with this and think it's the most likely outcome. Some places will be pasted with snow and others will be listening to drip drip.

What would an elongated low bring to the table? M
