    Hi all,

Thinking about buying one of these cars after previously owing a 2015 Hyundai i40 that broke my heart with issues.

There are 64,000km on the Megane.

Thanks in advance for any insight on the reliability of the car

The 1.5 Ltr DCi engine is quite reliable when maintained regularly and that is very low mileage for a diesel.

The main issues with Renaults is electrical gremlins as they age.

I believe this was true about the electrics in the early 00's models but I read in another forum a lot of these have been sorted in new models but you are never guaranteed I suppose.

I'm a fan of small Renaults and have two classics in the garage but we also have a 2016 Clio as a runabout, I'm fortunate that I have a garage and pit as I've had to do a nice bit of work to it over the last two years. Clock spring failed, two electric window switches failed, the actuator for the fuel cap failed, boot latch failed, three pig tail harnesses let in water and failed, wiper stalk failed, LCD screen on dash failed, plastic parts on the clutch slave cylinder cracked twice. Parts can be expensive and design choices by the Renault engineers are often poor making repairs more difficult. You can often source non OEM or breaker parts quite reasonably.

There is a reason that I use a Toyota as my daily.

The 2018 model is the Mégane 4 which is a big upgrade on the 3 in terms of design, equipment levels and styling

The engine is the same as before. I have a fifteen year old Fluence which is identical mechanically to the Mégane and all the electrics still work perfectly. The Kadjar is the model with electrical glitches, particularly the speedo display.

Running an 18 for two years have had no issues with it, engine is grand for what it is imo you could go a lot worse than a Megane.

Have driven audi vws Toyota before they all had niggles can't fault the megane and was cheap as well

I have owned 5 Renault megane coupes over the years from new and have never had any issues with them. In fact we are currently selling our 2015 one with similarly low mileage at the moment https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/renault-megane-coupe-gt-line-1-5-diesel-car/38417281

To be fair, a 2010 Fluence is not mechanically identical to a Mk4 Megane even if both have a 1.5 DCi. Crucial difference is the Fluence does not have a particulate filter.

The Mk3 Megane/Fluence, especially those without a DPF is indeed a very reliable car. They are not prone to "electrical problems" that pub experts like to waffle about. However I can't comment on the Mk4 - I don't even know anyone who owns one.

I have had multiple Renault's over the years with this engine and as already said, once serviced with correct oil and on time, they are bullet proof, I had a 2018 Mk4 Renault Grand Coupe for 2 years with that engine, and now have a Renault Kadjar with same engine, no issues with either and would recommend them both.

Generally pretty reliable car all round. Clutch pedels going to floor and some pipes on the engine blocking up with soot are the most common problems I've seen. I would make sure the timing belt has been done or will be done if you buy it

To be fair the electrics on my fathers mk3 Megane got completely fried

I have no experience with Renault because they are French and I usually do not buy French cars, but I see many high mileage cars with the 1.5 DCi engine. I believe the Dacia Duster and Renault Fluence also use this engine. How well does this engine age? And what about the gearbox?

For the electric issues is important to know what is the average repair cost of them… No one want to risk a 3k repair bill, but I would risk a 200 euro bill if I like the car.

Neighbour has a 2019 Megane estate. She loves it to bits. Huge car, a lot of kit and in her case, bullet proof reliable.

I have a 18 megane automatic 1.5D, 80km on the clock. When I test drove it the radio didn't work but that was fixed before I picked it up, it did have me worrying I was buying a lemon though. Apart from servicing I haven't had to do anything to it until now. Timing belt is due now as it's 6 years old so definitely make sure that's done or accounted for in the price. Renault are looking for €650 to do it. Haven't shopped around yet though.

Just had mine serviced & shocked that it cost 400 for the service only. They had told me on the phone it would be 3 & then when I dropped it in said it was a minor service even though I asked for the price for a full service. The garage i usually go to had closed down but I'll be looking elsewhere from now.

Had a 2008 and 2011 1.5dci, both engines were bulletproof, smooth and fugal. Wish the rest of those cars were the same, hopefully things have improved.
