Hi all.Hope this is right place to ask.Got the 2 gig fiber installed by Digiweb and it came with zytel router.I said I would do a speed test with cat 6 lan cable directly from router to Apple TV 4K and the speed maxed out at 940mbts.Now I know that Apple TV can only do 1000mbps but surely it should be hitting 1000?

The reason I ask the question is when I noticed this and phoned Digiweb they said that I hadn’t been switched from 1 gig to two and the would turn it on that day but I’m still not maxing out anyone than 940 which is the same speed as I was getting on my 1 gig connection.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

940 Mbps is probably about right for a 1Gb network card - it is likely limited by the hardware within the Apple TV device itself

A 1gig LAN port will be unlikely to max at 1gb because of various overheads. I wouldn't expect it to max out tbh.

If you only have a 1gb port why do you want 2gb net connection can I ask??

Better question why do you want to pay ridiculous money for a speed hardly any device can make use of.. OP unless you’ve got a seriously big household and you’ve been buffering a lot on the gigabit you’re honestly chucking money down the drain.

Thanks that’s what I was thinking it was to do with hardware. Thanks that’s all I needed to know

I see your point but it only cost me an extra 5 euros to upgrade a month. Was using the 1 gig with Fritz box modem and I was experiencing lots of buffering.I have loads of devices in the house and 7 people/4 teenagers constantly using plex/Playstations and iptv. Now when I walk in the door I can actually taste the internet🤣Only joking but the new connection seems to be more solid.

Out of interest boz - what's the model of the Zyxel router Digiweb supplied?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,233 ✭✭✭heavydawson

Yeah, the 2gb offer with Digiweb is quite good TBH relative to their other offers. I upgraded my connection recently. I'm upgrading the home wifi to wifi 7 (Asus Wifi 7 Mesh) now (from Asus-based Wifi 6 mesh). Highly unnecessary but sure what tech isn't! So I'll be looking for new homes for my 2xRT-AX86Us and GT-AX6000 if anyone interested!

There's something else wrong if what you've listed is flooding a 1gb connection. It's not the fibre - more likely if everything is over wifi that's much more likely to be the cause. Try and get some stuff on LAN (ie, cable) connection.

    hi it’s Zyxel EX5601-T0.

Did you go with Digiweb as well?

the other lan connection I have is on a Nvidia shield tv and that is maxed out at 920 to 940 as well.I have done this test in morning with no WiFi load and still get that speed but as others said it’s probably just hard ware limitations.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,659 ✭✭✭Raichų

OP you’re not going to see 2gbps without a device that has a 10gbps lan (I don’t believe they make in increments so it’s gigabit lan or 10gig lan)

If you have a reasonably modern laptop or PC it may have 10gig lan.

Fully aware of this but I thought max out at 1g.I new with hard ware I was always going to be restricted to 1.The whole confusion was the spanner in the works that Digiweb put there with a week after get 2 gig connection that I still hadn’t been switched over to the 2 g connection when I questioned it.

what you’re expecting is the limit to cap out but that just won’t happen. It’s like your car; it might say on the Speedo 240km/h; but you’re never going to get to that speed. Besides that about 50-60 extra megabits on top of 900 odd won’t make any difference to you.

If you want to verify you’re receiving a 2 gigabit downstream login to the router and it should show the downstream.

2.5Gbe is becoming quite common now and supported on the higher end consumer gear.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 96 ✭✭knobtasticus

Lots of Ethernet NICs will auto-negotiate at 1/2.5/5/10gbps. Highly unlikely OP would have a laptop with 10gb but possible to have a 2.5gb port.

@bozharry1 - pleasantly surprised that router has at least one 2.5Gb ethernet port so be sure to use that one if you want to speed test through another device with a 2.5Gb+ port. You can pick up a USB3/2.5Gb ethernet adaptor on Amazon for €25. Failing that, any modern phone with at least WiFi6 support will verify that you’re at least getting more than 1gb from Digiweb. TCP overhead will mean the max you get out of 1Gb will be ~940mbps and out of 2Gb, ~1890mbps.

    Thanks will try that.

most I’m getting WiFi is bout 750 with Apple TV that supports WiFi 6 and yes I have lan connected to 2.5.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,659 ✭✭✭Raichų

yeah what I mean is you don’t have

1GB lan, 2GB, 3GB and so on. It’s generally, as you said and I will correct myself (forgot about 2.5gb😂)

    Gigabit, 2.5gb, 10gb.

OP, like I said, the only verifiable way to make sure you have a downstream of 2000mbps is login to your router and check the bitstream/downstream. You can run speed tests til you’re blue in the face it doesn’t matter what they say.

When you run a Speedtest you’re connecting to a server to do so, depending on where that server is (and their own capacity) you may show as having a slower speed than you are actually receiving down the line.

I don’t know for certain how to login to the router you have, but it likely tells you in the manual or on the digiweb site. You can do this on your phone or laptop

I just upgraded the home network to WiFi 7 today. I have a 2gb Digiweb connection. The wired results were as expected, but the wireless results (with a OnePlus 11 5g) were better than expected

    Screenshot_2024-12-30-23-25-21-61_79d0ff8f9752a3fc32487e6d62330a6a.jpg

It basically got the exact same result as wired over WiFi. Really impressive stuff.

For those interested router was an Asus GT-Be98

Went into settings on router and checked everywhere for downstream with no success. Will check for online manual

    Jesus that router is pricey.

This is the new Digiweb Zyxel gateway:
    https://www.zyxel.com/service-provider/global/en/products/ethernet-cpe/ethernet-gateways/ex3600-t0

, based on how it's described here:

    https://digiweb.ie/digiweb-latest-news/zyxel-dual-band-ax6000/?highlight=modem

It looks like there are multiple variants, so it would help if you could find a serial/model number on the device itself:

I got a reduced price on it from Amazon.de, but yes, they're pricey. I've had very good experiences with Asus generally over two generations of Wifi, so I don't mind paying a premium. I won't be upgrading it again until Wifi 8 circa 2028, so spread the cost over 3 years for something you literally use constantly, and I don't think it's bad value. It's like not skimping on the tyres (consequences of skimping vary wildly however :-D )
