selling US shares held on Computershare

I have some old Smurfit and CRH shares, which after they've changed their listings are held on computershare. What is the easiest way to sell these?

My Computershare account does not have a sales option, when I put in to sell it tells me that "sales are not allowed on this account holding"

If I open an account with degiro or whoever can I sell them through that? What do I need, a share cert number or something?

    Thanks dx

I have been trying the US numbers for computershare but cannot get a person on the phone. Very frustrating. The thread linked above didn't have any solutions, just highlighting the issues.

Was an hour and half on phone to Computershare in Kentucky three weeks ago followed up with a letter got nowhere.

Have spent six hours today trying to sort Computershare online.

Cannot get into accounts which they are saying I have.

Hope someone will us know how to deal with them.

In particular how to sell the shares and not having to deal with them.

I can feel your pain, an absolute nightmare to deal with, and that is putting it mildly. Their big thing about transferring your shares to a broker is the MEDALLION GUARANTEE STAMP, they recommend a number of providers of this MGS, all UK based and all charging significant amounts as well as a whole load of palaver around AML (understandably).

However there is a solution, or at least there was for me (after months of toing and froing with them), and the solution turned out to be pretty simple in the end. I have an account with Charles Schwab (should be relatively easy to set one up and to the best of my knowledge they accept new Irish clients), so I simply completed Computershare's 'Stock Transfer Request Form' (without the MGS) and sent it to Charles Schwab, together with the 'Transfer Your Account to Schwab' form, and Charles Schwab looked after the rest of it (including I'm assuming providing Computershare with their infamous MGS), the transfer was completed in around 2 weeks iirc, to a huge sigh of relief from me. One important thing was that the Account Name had to be the same in both Accounts (Computershare and Schwab).

That was my experience, hope it works our for you guys/gals and anybody else suffering at the hands of Computershare.

Edit: It is possible that Davy and Goodbody can provide the MGS if you have an account with them, I had a look at opening an account with them at the time and disposing of my shares that way but their account maintenance and trading fees were quite high so I didn't do any more about it. There are no account maintenance or trading fees with Schwab

Hi, I was in the same boat last summer and got it sorted relativity easily. You need to open an account with Davy stockbrokers in Dublin, lodge your paper shares with them and they will give you a form from computershare to fill in and sign. Davy's will look after the rest, the total cost to this was around 400 euro, this included Davy's quarterly fee and all other related fees. Davy's were very easy to deal with and very helpful. Best of luck

400 euro is a serious wedge to handle the transfer/sale of your own shares, Charles Schwab did it for free
