Applying for a role internally - how do I tell my boss?

    I’m a Planner for a Construction Company.

    Hate it. There a year now and honestly it’s just not for me. But I get on well with my colleagues and generally like the company I work for.


    I’ve been looking at moving elsewhere but a role came up within the company that looks really appealing.

    It’s a Project Manager Training Programme, but it’s essentially for training up site supervisors and Engineers. I work closely with the Project Managers but I’m under no illusion. I know severely under qualified for the role.

    Few things in my favour; I get on well with my boss and the senior leadership team. The recruitment is for a less sought after region and generally they don’t post these positions - you just get the nod so that suggests to me they’re struggling to get people

    I won’t be staying at what so I feel I may as well stick my neck out.

    How the hell do I tell my boss? I think he knows I’m frustrated but that’s about it. I just sent him a message yesterday about having a chat tomorrow. He’s not in the office but said I could ring or wait till Monday to chat in person.

    If I’d any hope of getting it I think I’d need senior backing.

    Any suggestions?

    I'm not in construction, so pls bear with me: a lot of project management is about planning, and you're not enjoying planning now. Are you sure this would be the best career path for you, or you're seeing it as an escape route because your chances look alright this time?

    Had you considered project management in the past? What would it take for you to get up to speed? I'd be looking up LinkedIn to see who did a similar role to you in the past, what are they doing now and what did they learn/do to help them get there. You have a good rapport with colleagues and planning is still a good transferrable skill.

    I'd frame it as: I saw this ad, I'm interested. I think it is a great opportunity to grow my career in the organisation, and I'd like to ask your advice about the role and course? Others may disagree with me here, but I wouldn't go in saying I hate my job and I'm not happy (even if that's true), because that's going to colour things for him, no matter how your application goes.

    Are you an engineer yourself? When you say under qualified… would you be a non engineer training up engineers?


    If an engineer you should have a good shot considering.

    If you’re genuinely interested in the new job, then you don’t have to justify an application to your manager or anybody else.

    If you’re using it as a means to escape from your current job, you might as well just leave the company altogether.
