It's nowhere near as good as the original but not terrible either. A solid three star film. As typical with epic films these days, it could have done with another round or two in the editing suite. I found myself much more interested in Pascal's character compared to Mescal's.

I'm in the minority that I actually enjoyed the film. Might have helped that I went in with low expectations, as I am a big fan of the first Gladiator film. I found it well paced, I didn't get bored at all and the 2+ hours flew by quickly. Some of the effects looked a bit "weird" (for lack of a better word) and scenes like the one with the sharks could have been omitted without causing any issues with the flow (and save a good 15-20 minutes off the film running time).

I agree that Denzel Washington seemed to have the most fun with his role and probably had the only role with some substance in it. I don't think Paul Mescal has the gravitas (not just yet anyway) to carry a film like this, but saying he is a bad actor overall is short sighted and/or people haven't seen Aftersun. Mescal is a great actor, but better suited in films focused on character development and Gladiator II isn't that.

I found it to be usual Ridley Scott where there's an hour missing. Some good stuff in there especially the ending, but the heft just wasn't there.

Christopher Nolan has named Gladiator 2 as his favourite film of 2024, calling the historical epic “jaw-dropping” and “masterful”.

Hmm, I was going to ignore the film but now that Nolan says this I may watch it over Christmas.

Jaysus. Directors union there. Its ok. Just about worth a watch. Maybe he means your jaw will drop seeing sharks in the colloseum.

"The quadratic entanglement of the pathos of the franchise is made manifest here through Scott's genius, his continuance to keep the monetary efficacy of past creations flowing into the coffers of the people who have run out of ideas" - Christy Nolan

I was thinking the same. There's definitely been an element of directors spoofing with praise for other directors in recent years due to what cinemas faced after the pandemic.

Nothing about the plot or characters then.

    Me thinks that's selective quoting.

Finally got around to watching this last night. Christ Almighty what a steaming pile of poo.

It seems Ridley Scott is now being allowed to make movies purely on the basis of his reputation.

I couldn't see any other director in the world being allowed by a major studio to put something like that on a screen.

Poor poor film…very unengaging with so many beats from the original...found it boring, don't see the love for Mescal. Rest of the cast wasted with only Denzel allowed to camp it up

watched it last night and thought it was really poor.

Olive Stone said this movie was 'empty calories'. Sums it up perfectly

Dont mind Mescal doing a English accent but it seems too posh for his status in life.

    Its Denzel's film.

Saw this movie last night. what a disappointment.

who comes up with the 2 emperors that act like that.

what a turkey of a movie.

between this, the last few alien movies, napoleon, the last duel… i think it's time to hang it up Ridley.. respect and all that.

I wouldn't call it a turkey and I expect Scott will release a bigger cut down the line which will make it better.

I think as soon as the Cgi dogs appeared 10 minutes in that looked like something from a horror video game, he immediately lost a huge chunk of the audiences respect and it then became instantly something inferior to the first. Its was super lazy and lame, as was the scene with the ships coming ashore. I just dont think people want to see video game graphics in whats supposed to be a serious movie. It wasnt a sci-fi or fantasy movie where that sort of thing is expected or the imagination gives leeway for it, its about ancient Rome, so combining that tech was a very bad move IMO and ruined it, other criticisms aside.

I can't say I've ever been happy to see a poor film at the cinema knowing that I will have to wait to watch the "good" version.

It's a turkey, plain and simple.

Given the extended cut of Gladiator is a few deleted scenes haphazardly edited in, ruining the pace of the film in the process, I wouldn’t hold out much hope that any kind of alternate or director’s cut would transform this.

Denzel Washington was the only saving grace of the movie. His character had an understood character motivation and intelligence to put his plan into action. Mescal did fine but his character was mostly just reacting to events. Pascal's talent was totally wasted in this movie.

Started watching it lastnight. Turned it off after an hour. Its basically the same story as the first one.

A lad in his 80's should be nowhere near making movies like this. He has messed up enough in the last few years.

Constant turds of movie being churned out by hollywood. Actors and directors are stealing a living.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,480 ✭✭✭jj880

The Directors cut could be better if they cut the 2 emperors out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,882 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

But that was historically accurate. There being two emperors not how they were depicted on screen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,480 ✭✭✭jj880

    Not sure I follow.

I just meant they're a pair of annoying doses.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,882 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

They are real historical figures. I don't think a film set in Rome in that period could nhave the emperors excluded from the story nor an important part of it.

Saw it yesterday. Don't think it's as bad as others are saying but I have to say it wasn't great. If you are thinking of going id say save your cash and wait till it comes out on tv

There was a few emperors of Rome who were bizarre in the extreme. They may seem very weird but read about Caligula and Nero and their ‘antics’, and these two will then seem pretty mild.

Haven’t seem this and probably never will, but curious to know whether they managed to slip GAA shorts into the storyline?
