There's nothing new in any of that? Russia has been clear that NATO membership for Ukraine is a non-starter. And Russia has been clear that Zelensky's constitutional position after his term in office expired is at best dubious. Ukraine has a law against negotiations, whereas Russia has never refused negotiations.

Negotiations have to be realistic. Its estimated that roughly a million Ukrainian soldiers are dead or seriously wounded, with half of that being suffered in 2024 alone. By comparison, Mediazona's independent count can find 75K dead Russian soldiers. The implied ratio of casualties does align with the regular exchanges of dead bodies between Russia and Ukraine. From May to Dec there was several exchanges. Russia handed over 2,790 Ukrainian dead and Ukraine returned 331 Russians. The exchanges have gotten more and more lopsided as the year went on. At the most recent on Dec 20th, 508 Ukrainian dead were exchanged for 42 Russian dead.

The only reason the "friends of Ukraine" are even entertaining negotiations - blasphemy before now - is because even in the cope bubble its ever so slowly dawning that Ukraine is losing. So they want to have a Minsk III style agreement - short truce, re-arm and re-organise Ukraine, induct it into NATO and then launch a new offensive. Russia has no reason to agree to any of that. They're winning, so they can achieve their goals on the battlefield if necessary.

Negotiations are viable, but NATO needs to stop with the silly ideas of "freezing the conflict", "Ukraine in NATO", "security guarantees for Ukraine", "peackeepers in Ukraine", etc, etc. Its not just a waste of time, it is a waste of peoples lives.

But that only underscores the point: maintaining current levels of support is like the bare minimum to keep Ukraine viable, even with that they've been gradually losing ground for months.

Avatar is saying that Ukraine & Europe together alone can not only maintain the current stalemate but

As mentioned earlier the Kursk debacle seems to be getting picked up on finally by Western media. French media outlet LCI interviewed a soldier in the region who gives the current reality of the situation.

Highly unlikely the order will be given to evacuate the region when the time comes.

A million Ukrainian soldiers dead? Along with the air force being destroyed 3 times over?

Russia has been clear that NATO membership for Ukraine is a non-starter.

It's always been a non starter, since at least 2014 and after that not a chance. By NATO's own rules they can't even put forward a nation engaged in conflict within its borders. And unlike Russia they're a) far more likely to actually follow their own rules and b) need the full consensus of their members. So the NATO angle is Kremlin scutter from the start. Though they did end up doubling NATO's borders with Russia. Slow handclap.

And Russia has been clear that Zelensky's constitutional position after his term in office expired is at best dubious.

The constitution of another state is frankly none of their business.

Negotiations have to be realistic. Its estimated that roughly a million Ukrainian soldiers are dead or seriously wounded, with half of that being suffered in 2024 alone. By comparison, Mediazona's independent count can find 75K dead Russian soldiers.

Actually estimates(non Kremlin) run to roughly about half a million casualties on both sides, but with far far greater civilian deaths and injuries on the Ukrainian side. Wonder why that is…

Well duuhh. Russia is very slowly taking ground, so where do you think most Russian dead end up? I'll give you a wee hint; it's not on the Ukrainian side of the lines, is it? So of course Russia will have more bodies to hand over. When Germany blitzkrieged across France in 1940, on which side of the lines were the majority of dead Germans to be found? This is pretty basic stuff here. Indeed, outside of Kremlin scutter circles spinning bollocks to the easily swayed the fact the Ukrainians have any Russian dead to hand back is interesting in of itself.

Russia has no reason to agree to any of that. They're winning, so they can achieve their goals on the battlefield if necessary.

I'd be willing to bet the farm that if we swapped out Israel for Russia you'd have a very different take on this indeed.

Capable yes, but they won't do it. The future of Ukraine will continue to be in the hands of the US. Whatever Trump proposes to stop the fighting, Europe will be passive or some politicians will make speeches against the plan but then do nothing.

At minimum you are forgetting about Ukraine. Surrender is not an option. Surrender means children being raped, murdered, kidnapped. Men killed, women raped. Everything worth half a Ruble being stolen. Do you think countries bordering Ukraine (first they came for Ukraine…) are going to let 21st century Nazis run amok.

I can see Trump being okay with Nazis, but not European powers.

For the avoidance of doubt Nazis are bad.

Highest number of casualties by far reported today in the Kursk region.

Reported by the Russian Ministry of Defence. Well they're trustworthy… 😂

If we had gone by pronouncements of the same Russian Ministry of Defence, you'd be happily sipping lattes posting this stuff from Kiev. Two years ago.

Do you have the reported russian losses from that news source? (for comparison)

'Reported' by the Russian Ministry of Defense.

I'd get a more accurate account if I asked the dog.

"from the report of the Russian Ministry of Defence"

    Seriously?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,121 ✭✭✭jackboy

Are these the same European powers that were perfectly happy with letting Russia take all of Ukraine at the start of the war. They only stepped in with help after Ukraine put up an impressive defense and the Russian military turned out to be a joke.

Ukraine cannot trust Europe, Zelensky knows this well.

That’s a good point. But, extrapolate. Everyone NOW knows Russia are a rag tag bunch of Bozos… they can and WILL be driven from Ukraine and most likely collapse into separate Republics.

Probably isn't, or at least I'd wait until the wider picture comes along TV. There's plenty of scutter on both sides to go around. Nature of war an' that.

    Spoiler Alert!!

Santa Claus was on Flight J2-8243.

"SOBR fighters dressed Leonid Yakubovich in a "unloading vest" during the show "Field of Miracles" In the New Year's edition of the show "Field of Miracles", which aired today on "Channel One", Victoria Astakhova, lieutenant colonel of the Moscow department of the Russian Guard, took part. Before the start of the game, she presented the host of the program Leonid Yakubovich with gifts: a flag of the Russian Guard and a photo album. The props were brought into the studio by two SOBR fighters. The episode of "Field of Miracles" joined the pre-holiday mood set by the video that appeared today, in which Santa Claus is shot down by Russian air defense systems."

They write this sh1t themselves. The Kremlin has also warned the world's media against saying it was Russia that shot the plane down. Like the weird kid in the corner threatening fire and brimstone. Need saving from themselves. Can't be trusted with scissors.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,571 ✭✭✭✭Say my name

Azerbaijan who own the airline wants an international investigation into the downing of the plane. But Russia and Kazahkstan want a regional organisation that is headed by Russia to solely investigate.

Moscow has urged calm and it's foreign minister said it would be wrong to come to the conclusion that it was shot down by russian forces.

I would also point out for others that the unusually round numbers tend to be a holdover of the communist system where certain targets need to be met so numbers are reported upwards "correctly" so that the reportees don't find themselves in the gulag (today this would be defenestration or in the Korean brigades).

When you see jellyfish regurgitate such numbers, without evidence as always, you can summarily dismiss their viewpoints.

The numbers are useful to know what russia would like them to be (one can see Kursk is their priority) but little else in an objective reality.

Looks like more nonsense. Not only are the Russian's burning the faces off the Koreans, they are now making it as difficult as possible by killing the wounded but all the ones they do eventually capture end up dying straight after. How inconvenient

Looks like CNN will be waiting a while for this exclusive interview.
