Had a doorman hesitate about asking me for ID last weekend, when I'm over twice the drinking age.

I suspect he has vision problems!

You're only as old as the woman you feel….

I’m 45 and, without blowing my own trumpet, I always get compliments on how young I look. I usually keep my head and face clean shaven. I lather up the top and sides of the head with shaving foam and shave it in the shower with a 5 blade razor. I take care of the missed spots in the mirror afterwards. If I’m lazy and go a few days without shaving my face and hair then you can see the auld salt and pepper colour coming through in my hair and stubble, and the lightness on top of my head.

Was bringing my mother to a hospital appointment a couple of years ago. When she was called in from the waiting room the nurse asked her if she wanted to bring her husband in with her.

Once, when collecting my son from school one of his classmates asked me "are you Johnny's grandad?".

    Yeah, I look older.

Will be 50 next year but have been told on numerous occasions that i would pass for early forties. I feel every bit of 49 though - eyesight and hearing not what it was 10 years ago. Hair starting to grey at the temples also, more pains and stiffness in the old joints and feeling a lot more lethargic. Difficult to manage weight also due to slowing metabolism. It catches up on us all eventually…..

nail on the head. I've deffo slowed the last 18 months. Now 46, I can only manage one game of soccer per week. Used to be playing 2 or 3 games a week - but the knees and legs are going.

Almost 45, often told I look mid 30s.

Never smoked, been veggie for over 20 yrs, moderate drinker, mostly beers. Decent genes I guess. My Da in his 80s and no balding.

No kids and for the most part a relatively stress free attitude.

The no kids thing definitely plays a huge part. My mates with kids all look ancient.

    That's called "letting yourself go".

Contract signed, locked in. No further effort required. Coast until it's too late to reverse

There are alot of factors that contribute to someone looking younger e.g weight, sleep, stress, diet, smoker, drinker, genes. Work life balance, commuting times all lead to stress and less time for exercise.

It's also the lack of sleep and stress. Crazy how much those two things can age you.

Just after I turned 50 (10 years ago!) I was in Woodies buying a tin of paint that cost €30. When I went to pay, the teenager at the till asked for €27.
“It says €30 on the label,” I said.
“Yes,” said she, “but we have 10% off for pensioners!”

    “Thanks very much,” said I.

love all the comments here. It’s refreshing to hear many of us are fresh faced for our ages. There’s a nice positive vibe from people replying which is good.
like a few before me here I’ve been finding stray greys in the last few years but no sign of it taking over the crop yet. No receding hairline either.
took me years to have any significant stubble if I didn’t shave and now if I don’t it’s where most of my grey hairs lye.
Never a smoker and couldn’t call my drinking drinking but the middle age slowdown is evident but I suppose to look at if I’m standing still I don’t look my age.

I was chatting to a woman recently, hadn't met her before, friend of a friend. I said something like 'I presume you're around late 50s like myself?'. She stared open-mouthed and said 'I'm FORTY TWO'.

If I grow the beard and hair a bit then I look at least my age with the grey etc. But when I am clean shaven and hair cut to the root i look younger. Been of slim build helps. And not wearing cardigans with leather patches on the elbows.

A man who lifts weights, eats reasonably well, stays slim and has most of his hair should look younger than his age; Fat bald heads and fat bellies age men badly - however when you are 70 or 80, having a fat face may make you look younger due to smoothing out wrinkles.

    There's also this.

So aim for 700 w*nks per year.

I'm 50 and bald but people think I'm 10 years younger.

I'll take that at this stage in the game.

I’m early 50’s, but I feel young. Look maybe my age or a bit younger as I keep very fit and am careful to keep weight off. I have my head clean shaven so my baldness is somewhat hidden. However I’ve grown a beard for the winter and it’s completely white - that makes me look old!

I was watching an episode of Last of the Summer Wine yesterday from the late 70’s, I was shocked to see that the old codgers in the episode were the same age I am now, but they looked much older. I think people in general look younger for longer now when compared to the 70’s / 80’s. Same watching Top of the Pops from 1981 this evening, and the audience even though they’re probably teenagers looked like they were in their 30’s.

I'm in my 40s and have very few fine wrinkles - my skin does look younger (genes and staying in the shade/wearing factor 30). Loads of white hairs - but I've been getting those since I was 18. Not necessarily a sign of ageing (and people's sight can deteriorate at very young ages). My own sight is still strong.

But you can't deny ageing - I don't have the same physical energy, need a rigid sleep routine - any irregularity in sleep makes me feel jet-lagged (whether going to bed too late, waking up too late, not going to bed/getting up at the same time all the time - none of these made a difference when I was younger) and drinking is limited because hangovers become frightful. Also I have more stiffness and achiness in the joints. And your metabolism slows down. God if I ate and drank what I used to I'd be a heifer. But these are all messages to look after yourself now, and that helps.

I'm 49. Don't drink or smoke and keeps me fresh enough.

Near my mid-30s and look younger than my parents did at the same age. I'm not exactly healthy, drink as much as they did and my diet is way worse. Only difference that I know of is that they smoked most of their life. Although my brother smokes and looks good for his age so I can't make sense of it. My grandparents aged better again. Anyone else have a similar experience of poor aging for those born late 1950s?

I agree lots of healthy advice here. The one I struggle most with it a good sleep routine. I sleep less than recommended but it’s like a power sleep I wonder if I could get myself up to 8 hours a night would I be better for it. Other side is that my creativity is sparked during the times I’m awake and that’s an important part of me. When im older I’ll make a mature choice on that one.

It's easier to look younger than you are, especially for a female, if done right, with modern techniques.

But fcuk me, you just know Andrea Corr is natural. How? How can she still be so youthful and beautiful at her age

When she was called the worlds most beautiful woman, it was no understatement. She's still stunning!

As a nation we've never been number one in anything on the world stage. The only exception was being home to the worlds most beautiful woman, that being Andrea Corr!

And the annoying thing is, people will look her up again, and say she's good looking but nothing special. She's not photogenic in that way. You have to go back to one of the Corrs music videos and see her in action.

She's the only person I could ever describe at breathtaking in her day! Out of this world stunning!

I am 35 (almost 36). I look older for sure. Grey/White hair and starting to get bald. Not to mention my belly looks like mama dog expecting puppies and bad posture. IT job is killing me slowly.

Regularly get told I'm looking great, 10 years + younger, not aging at all or "it's younger you're getting".

Even by people that don't know me that well.

Everytime I go away thinking are these people going blind or what.

I'm 52 and when I look in the mirror the etchings on my face from the sands of time are blatantly obvious to me.

    It baffles me.

It happened just a few days ago even.

Went into a shop that I rarely go to and the person behind the counter was someone I hadn't seen in about 6/7 years.

She said "You look great" and we had a few words before I asked for what I needed.

They didn't have it and she said 'I'm so sorry you had a wasted journey for nothing.

I replied it wasn't wasted at all as I got to bump into to her again.

She said aw that's so lovely of you to say that.

    She did look great btw.

The killing bit is trying to pay back a compliment that sounds sincere but the person is looking shook as fook 😬
