My screen keeps jumping up and down when I click on a thread?

Any time I click on a thread the screen just keeps bouncing back and forward. It's both on the mobile and desktop site. Sometimes it will bring me back days on a thread. I commented on a thread to day and when I came back It sent me back to the 19th of November.

An old and as yet unsolved bug with Vanilla, just like so many other issues it has.

It has got hugely worse in the last few days

Also, notifications open the right thread but often up to 6 years ago, in terms of the posts it displays

Same here but, despite it's apparently being an old bug, yesterday was the 1st time I can recall encountering it.

On android 14 and Chrome 131.0.6778.135

I see it only rarely, and it comes and goes without any obvious logic. For the example thread above I can't reproduce it.

I'm having the same jumping screen problem on some threads. I thought it was due to a bad internet connection, but that has been resolved and the jumping still happens. I now suspect it is connected to ads.

That was my first instinct too, but I run with uBlock Origin and still experience it, albeit rarely.

    Me too.

This thread however is behaving impeccably.

Is the issue just with threads that have many pages ?

    Could be that.

Also this thread doesnt have images, twitter links etc

Have been experiencing the same issue, thought it was due to those large ads that take up a large portion of the screen (mobile)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,375 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

The ad is trying to overlap the comment textbox on mobile for me. I drafted a post here and when I returned to the thread it was bouncing up and down.

There is a screen focus conflict / competing commands.

Same issue for me but only if there have been an amount of posts since my last visit. If I try a thread with one unread post it's fine

I'm having the same but no ads (use opera browser)

There's a theory on the bugs thread that it is to do with rendering quoted posts \ replies.

If it is happening to people without ads then it adds plausibility to that theory.

Same problem here - the screen keeps jumping when logged in to boards.ie on Android phone. Am using DuckDuckGo browser.

The other problem is that clicking on the link which should bring you to the most recent post in a thread, instead lands on some random page of the thread, but maybe months or years ago.

Seriously the site is basically unusable now for me. It's getting worse day by day. Will it ever be fixed? I like popping in and out in the evenings but I can't do that the way the site is now.

Multiple platforms, multiple browsers - Chrome, Brave, Android phone, Windows 10, Windows 11, … And even if old bug, never noticed before and it's bad in the last few days. Happens on all threads but most threads I look at have images in them from time to time.

I have tried scrolling down using 2 fingers with limited success. Also trying to scroll quickly to the bottom of the page first and then returning to the post it was returning to like an elastic band.

    Seemed to settle then.

Almost bad enough to call in the Musk DOGE department.

I've tried that too, now I've figured out if I can manage to keep my finger on a post for a few seconds to hold it in place, then the page stops jumping around.

Not a great solution but it works for me.

I'm getting it on one thread. Keeps going back to middle of the thread.

Jumping around used to be solved by an ad blocker, but that breaks other things.

I do not have any of these problems on any other forums.. Boards has it for years.

I know epileptic folks that have issues with bouncy displays. Maybe Boards needs a health warning now? /s

Me too, it was driving me absolutely demented during the recent werewolf game. Trying to follow on my mobile and couldn't get to any of the important posts.

Problem getting worse for me. Started with one thread. Now it's multiple threads..

This bouncy bug is starting to drive me insane….

It'll never be fixed. Powers that be to busy clamping down on any contrary opinions. Cant be bothered fixing essential functionality though. It'll be the hill this site dies on.

Reddit so much better at the moment and thats saying something.

It is worse on the mobile especially with fast moving large threads

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,494 ✭✭✭Pauliedragon

About 1% of the population have epilepsy and about 5% of people with epilepsy have issues with bouncy displays. It works out about 2000 people in Ireland have it. It's a pretty small mumber.

    It's still annoying as fcuk.

    And I don't have epilepsy.
