I'm talking about a muscle injury. Kleyns one. Coming back from time out and he suffers what would appear to be a serious muscle injury. Eventually you need to look further than bad luck.

Well maybe if his previous injury was a muscle injury you might have a point.

But it wasn't, it an eye injury. And he had surgery to clear out a niggly knee injury during that time.

Not sure you can put that on the S&C team.

That injury update is probably the worst scenarios you could expect for Casey & Abrahams. The timings of Murray's is terrible now that Casey is gone

I was just questioning it in terms of managing his workload on a return from a long lay off. He doesn't suffer many muscle injuries that I can recall.

The continuous injuries at the club isn't normal. The absolute absurdly long return times also is not normal. Anyone calling it bad luck at this point is wrong imo.

You'd hope having the lads in from the irfu recently will put competent practices in place.

Sometimes it's just really bad luck. Stormers have had similar these last two seasons.

Maybe someone will take their chance and break into the first squad.

I would read it as absolutely good news for Casey. Worst case would be ligament damage.

In the very short term, Ulster are absolutely haunted with injuries as well.

3 to 6 months for Casey depending on severity bit that is far more positive then a ACL INJURY

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,755 ✭✭✭50HX

Johnny may had something similar iirc, best of a bad situation for us

At least PFP is back & hopefully Murray not too far behind

Isn’t Liam Coombes just back from injury-terrible luck for the lad.

When you’re injured that much you must be weighing up retiring or Munster may have to make a difficult call on him and a few other injury prone lads.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,912 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

TBH he shouldn't have gotten his contract extension (and neither should Cian Hurley). It's a sign of the malaise behind the scenes. He's never fit and it's no surprise that he's injured again.

yeah was thinking the same, few lads time might be coming to an end

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,804 ✭✭✭snotboogie

Unfortunately the position where most players look to be coming to an end is the front row with; Archer, Ryan, Kilcoyne, Salanoa, Buckley and McSweeney. Outside of the front row I'd imagine only Hurley, Daly, Coombes and Gibbons are in trouble.

Some early Christmas cheer, Ben Whitehouse is the ref for Friday night.

Mossy Lawlor is the latest member of the coaching team to extent his contract for 2 years.

If & it's still an if, they wait til end of season to appoint Mike P has head coach then it's a farce...give it to him now if that's the case & move on.

We need an out & out DOR as well imo

Kidney would be suited to that I feel,

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,912 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

As Head of Rugby Operations, Costello is already the defacto DOR.

And if Prendy does get the gig, they won't wait until the end of the season to appoint him. However while he's admitted that he has his name in the hat he may not be the guy MR and the IRFU are after.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,755 ✭✭✭50HX

It's looking like he will get it with Leamy& himself signing on & now Lawlor

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,620 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Would kidney be suited to it and is going back to him really a good option. What good has he done in recent times to suggest he would be any good in the role?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,755 ✭✭✭50HX

He's munster through & through & has a large bank of experience which would garner alot of respect from players & staff

I think he'd be a good liason between captains of teams & their coaches

Maybe it's the nostalgia in me😁 (maybe he wouldn't be a good choice then)

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,912 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

Being Munster through and through is not a qualification. As I already said, Costello is already DOR in all but title.

I was responding to a posters query on why I thought he would be suitable to the role.

I am aware that being munster through & through is not a qualification

Is really necessary to state the obvious?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,795 ✭✭✭RichieRich_89

There's only one man for the job - Stuart Lancaster. Or Donnacha Ryan maybe. He's probably around the stage where he should get a head coach gig if that's something he's interested in.

If it's not Prendergast, that is. It's looking as if Costello will have a DOR-type role but won't actually be senior to the head coach. Maybe 'head of rugby operations' or something.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,912 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

Costello is already Head of Rugby Operations and has been since 2023.

Not sure Munster need another novice head coach learning his trade on the job.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,704 ✭✭✭✭mahoney_j

we need a strong coach and a reinforcements across the pack and a utility back who can give decent cover to Crowley ….boys out east can get what they want in an already strong squad ….not going back on old ground but if Irfu had Irish interest front and centre Barett ,salami /sneyman would of better served Irish rugby and Leinster rugby in future by going to one of other 3 provinces who are considerably weaker than Leinster

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,636 ✭✭✭theVersatile

Donnacha would be an excellent forwards coach replacement for Kyri (especially given ROG has said before that he has "a PhD in lineouts"), but I don't see him being appointed head coach

Not sure I see him being forwards coach either given how long he's committed with LaR, but family circumstances could push him maybe if himself and the missus want to move home.

I'm not sure how Barrett/Slimani/Snyman going to Munster would serve Leinster rugby better. Munster made their choices with their NIQ signings. They chose Kleyn over Snyman and signed Abrahams and Nankivell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 487 ✭✭sleepyman

The most critical area at the moment has to be the front row.If Archer,Killer and John Ryan are given another year I'd really worry.the IRfU dictat about NIQ props will really hinder us.

We just need some parity at scrum time.

Does anyone know what ceiling some of the props have in the Academy?I worry they won't be up to it and just threading water. There was alot of it in the early days of the academy but thankfully the quality seems to have improved.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,704 ✭✭✭✭mahoney_j

not just Munster they should of been let join any of other 3 provinces who have real needs for quality ….Leinster to there credit have a super conveyor of young Irish talent in there academy who would serve Leinster and irelands future better by playing more games ….signing above 3 is a pure luxury and you’d make a strong argument they are not needed there …..the way we’re heading in this country we will have one competitive province ….irfu allowing Leinster sign to sign top level players into such a strong squad already dosnt serve Irish rugby well

I think the problem is in the schools and clubs coming through. My son is 15, 6ft, has always either been a second row or back row as he came up through the ages, now he's playing junior rugby in school and his school are trying to get him to try out as a prop because there are some taller kids who can play 2nd row or back row. I know 6ft isnt tall for a prop but he's never played prop and doesnt have the build for it, but no young fellas want to play prop anymore and we are seeing that with thats coming through. As a result he's not getting game time and starting to lose interest, but I'd worry about him scrummaging at prop having never done it and they are not coached properly from what I can see. The IRFU and the provinces need to start getting players back out to clubs to put on coaching clinics, try to identify the next props and make the role important again, all youngsters are seeing is JVDF, Doris, O'Mahony, Beirne being lauded, and then the likes of Furlong, Loughman injured and battered and bruised. Even hooker seems like a more attractive option for players..
