I was looking to buy a cheap self contained (ie screw into outside wall not wired) cctv camera. Either with SD card storage or wifi to harddrive/cloud. Importantly I would like continuous recording not triggered recording with alerts as I have no front garden and don't want an alert everytime someone walks by with their dog! Definitely don't need a spotlight or 2 way speaker. Dont even need/want an app. Main purpose is to identify vandals. Any suggestions.

I got a Ring camera and solar charger for my back garden - if you keep an eye on the website they frequently do 50% deals, and bundles of products.

Works a treat, I'm delighted with it.

ETA - this is the one I got

they have this battery one as well

+1 for the Ring doorbell - I’ve a combo battery/mains door camera bell - but they do outside camera-only too - you can set the “trigger” area so outside of that it won’t activate so all the dog walkers in the world can pass by and it won’t be captured.
What you will want is to capture AND store the resultant footage - a few quid a month sorts this - and the app is very useful and easy to use. You want to good hdmi high quality camera in color - don’t skimp on it if this is important to you - grainy images will be worthless to you - also consider how good the camera is at nighttime - will you need an outside light to maximise quality?

I have 3 x Amazon Blink wireless cameras which work off the Wifi - only start recording upon activation of motion sensor. You can use batteries or connect them to mains (which i have). Easy install and no monthly subscription.

Hikvision DS-2CV2Q21FD-IW or similar models from Hikvision’s consumer-friendly range.

    Here's why:

Supports continuous recording to an SD card (up to 256GB).
Wi-Fi-enabled for optional storage to a local NVR or cloud.
Weatherproof design for outdoor use (IP65 or higher).

You can stick inside your window sill, and control it 360° via phone, no screws, no wires
