So 18.1 is due out to the public next Monday the 28th.

RC was seeded to the beta users last night.

Apple Intelligence can be activated in Europe, but the route to do it, cancels all subscriptions in the EU, and i don't fancy keeping the phone without AppleCare monthly.

Any good links to what’s needed to get it working and a full list of all the downsides?

When you have 18.1 installed, change you language to US english, then go to the app store and change your region to United States, bingo, all done.

Looks like I need to cancel my Apple One subscription and probably any others first. Is there any issues signing back up to these again with the US account?

You'll be charged in dollars for them, i'd imagine.

I pay monthly for AppleCare, so i really don't want to miss that.

Unfortunately no Apple Intelligence for the EU as yet🤔

Turns out this is only for iPhone and iPad.

With 15.1 on the Mac. It's available now. I have joined the waiting list. You still need to change the language. But English Ireland will be added for 18.2 in December. Coming to EU iPhone and iPad in April.

Enabled it there on Mac OS 15.1. Both System language and Siri language need to be set to en_US (though as EGB mentioned above, en_IE will be available next month).

The "waiting list" took less than 10 minutes. "Waiting list" makes it sound like there's an element of exclusivity to it, but I assume it's just a number of background configurations on Apple's side that takes some time to do.

Siri is still stupid. Ask it how to poach an egg, and and it still returns a list of website results, rather than just telling you how to do it. The ChatGPT integration isn't coming until December.

I went to the Wikipedia page for Quantum Mechanics and did the Summarise (sorry, I'm in en_US now, so it should be Summarize) function. It gave me a short paragraph detailing the article at a very high level in natural language. It wasn't particularly useful, as it used technical jargon that wasn't explained. I know, it was a harsh example :-).

I tried the Smart Reply in Mail. But I keep getting "Writing Tools Not Available. Please try a longer selection", so I'm not sure what that's about. I also tried the Summarise function on an email thread, and it did a good job of putting the salient points into a short paragraph.

All in all, I wouldn't bother going though any hoops to get this working on iOS/iPad OS at the moment. Wait until all the tools are available natively for us in April.

A couple of other things I've noticed. When I changed Siri to en_US on my Mac, it automatically changed on my iPhone too (without notifying me). When I changed the iPhone setting back to en_IE, it changed it immediately on my Mac, and Apple Intelligence was disabled. So it seems that the setting is linked on all devices that use the same Apple ID.

On the Smart Reply, I was using it wrong. It won't just write a reply for you. You have to write the reply yourself, then you can click on "Friendly", "Professional" or "Concise", and it will rewrite the reply in the choses style. For instance "Friendly" replaced Regards, with Cheers.

Siri has a bit of contextual awareness now. I asked it "How far is Paris from Dublin?", and it told me. Then I asked "And what's the time there?" - and it gave me the time in Paris (which is what I was asking without being specific).

@Gregor Samsa is the iPhone mirroring working on your Mac with the AI or is that still something we need to wait on🤔. Thanks for the previous posts by the way😀👍🏻

Thanks for reminding me - I had planned to check that this morning but forgot. Unfortunately it's still saying "iPhone Mirroring is not available in your country or region."

The iPhone Mirroring is separate to Apple Intelligence. Apple's concern there is that if they release iPhone mirroring here they will have to open the APIs up to competition from Android and whatever else.

It's all about ensuring the walled garden is impenetrable.

I was in the states this week on holiday, updated my iPad and 16PM to 18.1 and activated Apple Intelligence there, the new Siri animation is great, makes it look like a whole new thing, which I like.

The Clean-up in the photo’s app is a game changer, and I’d imagine it will only get better as the updates come, we were taking pictures all around Orlando, and removing people from pics, great stuff, no more having to wait around for people to walk past the shot you wanna take, just snap it, and remove them later.

So to my surprise, as soon as the plane landed and the phone picked up signal, Apple Intelligence stopped working, which is a bit sickening.

Hopefully, on the 2nd December, we will al have access to AI and IOS 18.2 also🤞

    With a bit of luck

That’s because Apple are having a big sulk because the CJEU ruled against them on the Apple tax issue. 😀

So the clean up of the photos is also AI and currently not available in the EU, is that correct?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 797 ✭✭✭breeno

Does the region/language/Siri change to USA trick work to get AI in Europe?

If so does it impact the phone or subscriptions etc in any way?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 3,827 Mod ✭✭✭✭eeloe

correct, not available in the EU until Apple Intelligence is available.

I currently have my region and language set to english US, but no joy, the only thing I have remaining to do is change my iCloud region to the US and that might work, but it’s going to cancel my monthly AppleCare+ subscription, and I’m not willing to cancel that.

Instead of changing my icloud region to the US, and losing my subs.

I created a new Apple ID, based in the states, and signed out for media and purchases with my old account, and logged in there with the new account and everything is now working.

    Very handy.

I tried this method last night but the AI stuff on the photo edit didn’t appear for me.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 3,827 Mod ✭✭✭✭eeloe

Do you have your region set to US and your siri language set to US english?

    They are two important steps.

  • Moderators, Regional South East Moderators Posts: 9,095 Mod ✭✭✭✭Aquos76

I’ll switch again there now and try again

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 3,827 Mod ✭✭✭✭eeloe

  • Moderators, Regional South East Moderators Posts: 9,095 Mod ✭✭✭✭Aquos76

yes, exactly as you said, once I changed Siri over to US then it worked, thanks for that

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 3,827 Mod ✭✭✭✭eeloe

    Enjoy.

The 'clean up' option that's now in photo's really is a game changer! :)

  • Moderators, Regional South East Moderators Posts: 9,095 Mod ✭✭✭✭Aquos76

Doesn’t look like the clean up option is available to Ire in 18.2 either. I installed the public beta last night using my original Apple ID and the clean up option is not in photo editing option for me

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 3,827 Mod ✭✭✭✭eeloe

Yes a few weeks ago, ireland was mentioned with English(Ireland) being in the list of available languages.

There has been no mention of it since the last two betas. such a shame for everyone in Europe not being able to get this software, i use AI daily, and the photo clean up multiple times a day.
