Literally had one of my mirrors stuck this morning and door seal frozen, first time ever.

To avoid rubber seals being frozen, apply Gummi Pflege to them and keep your mirrors unfolded if you can.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 807 ✭✭✭jayo44

Ohh thanks for that. Was gonna try rub some silicone sealer on them later.

I turned off the auto folding mirrors on mine yesterday after it thawed out.

The gears are usually plastic so won't take much to do damage if they're stuck, or maybe that's just a Ford thing.

Winter wheels and tyres will be going on at the weekend until I service it in March as well

yeah, same here with mirrors, better safe than sorry! (Last thing I need now is a motor gone on a mirror or whatever and a 300 euro bill)

will turn on auto fold again when weather gets warmer.

I've become reaquainted this week with the joy of frameless windows/doors and icy mornings. Have to completely defrost the top of the car and around it before I can open the door.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 807 ✭✭✭jayo44

Haha yep my e46 was a disaster this morning the windows froze solid to the seal ha.. the g30 funnily enough was OK.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,622 ✭✭✭✭Vicxas

My G30 door handles get stuck and if you try and force it will leave the locking machanism stuck open. Nightmare on cold mornings

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 807 ✭✭✭jayo44

They really weren't built for the cold haha. Mines the 530e so I must really start using the remote defrost setup 😂😂😂

My drivers door seals are shot from, well, age - there's been a lot of cold winters - and I can't find the proper replacement, either pre-formed or on a roll, anywhere. For a car that was sold in the millions.

Was a slightly damp and slightly draughty drive to work this morning as a result - may have to get some generic crud just to get me through the winter.

    Is that for Panda?

I know a very good FIAT dealer, who used to be Toyota dealer, who may be able to assist 😉

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72,868 ✭✭✭✭L1011

It is - I don't think its still in stock as a spare anymore; but as my service centre isn't a service dealer anymore they don't have the same parts access.

Said dealer isn't a million miles away though…

Car shed a trim piece off the belly this evening on a motorway that should remain nameless. Was a hell of a clonk when it let go and went under the wheel.

To whomever found it at speed. Sorry.

I've also left the occasional bolt, and exhaust end-pipe and a trail of rust shards all the way along that road at some stage or other- but that was a big piece to come off.

    Rx8?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,425 ✭✭✭Dartz

    Depends.

Did you find the piece or not? And is there a bill associated with finding it?

I'm not sure but what I do know is a member on here got a puncture from a piece of your car.

How does the world tell you to move on? When your car starts to fall apart. 🤣😎

Cars just doing it's own weight saving.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,425 ✭✭✭Dartz

Just wasn't smacked back in tight enough is all - dropped loose and snagged a catseye and got sent to meet its new owner at 120kph. Annoying because I have to find replacements. Fortunately, it's not an uncommon part to find in breakers.

Then again, there was also the time I ran over someone's ladder in the work van. At speed.

driving to shop earlier and car said outside temp was minus 3. So obviously below freezing etc road was fine and was not gritted and I had no slips or slides etc but there has been constant traffic on it all day

Got me thinking: at what temp does it get dodgy or is anything essentially below 0 degrees asking for a slide?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,537 ✭✭✭Nigzcurran

I think it's more to do with wet conditions and freezing temperatures together that can cause icy roads. I was all over the west last week in the snow and the roads were grand. A damp road in the shade on a freezing day can be treacherous though

Time is contagious, everybody is getting old.

Lexus reduced their pricing on some models in the past six weeks, the NX450H+ Phev is reduced by around €2300 yet it’s reduced by £5000 in the uk, somebody is making Bank on this, Great car to be fair but why the disparity n price reductions ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,921 ✭✭✭✭MetzgerMeister

I've experienced this awful feeling a few times. That's why I now never go looking until I'm ready to buy immediately regardless of what I have to do for transport in the meantime!

    (sorry long post)

What would you do with a car that's been in a garage for 3 months for NCT fail on Emmisions.
Now it is a old car 1998 I have owned for 20 years, earlier in the year car had head gasket replaced also new catalytic converter.
I took it to this garage never use before it's local to me and had good Google reviews.
They have replaced cat convertor as the replacement one that was done earlier in year apparently wasn't doing it's job but the new one was still not passing Emmisions on there machine then they replaced lamda sensor, they then said it should pass now.
It has now missed the NCT I had booked so they said they will take it in but then  said on NCT day water pipe burst which they said can't get the part for, I  got the part online from Winparts and took it in them, they fitted said they will take it in for NCT, rang a week later it didn't go in because another pipe burst this time they could replace it as this time it was a standard rubber pipe.
Phoned up again  on Friday still hasn't gone for NCT because this time it over heated, was told they will ring me back next week.
This is our second car so been managing with one, the reason I have been patient with the wait the owner was diagnosed with cancer so didn't want to put pressure on them they do have 2 mechanics and a receptionist I actually have never spoken to the owner only receptionist.
Now the car was driving fine when it was taken in ,not burning oil, no water leaks never needed topping up after head gasket replacement, I believe now the car has now a overheating problem with 2 pipes bursting so under pressure but
I wonder if constant getting up to temperature for testing Emmisions for the last 3 months has cause a head gasket fail, even though it was replaced earlier in year.
Now what do I do going forward or what should the garage do in your mind bearing in mind in only went in with Emmisions fail 3 months ago now seems to have developed more problems.

Time to move on. Stop wasting money on a 1998. Unless it was a DC2 or something valuable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,568 ✭✭✭SCOOP 64

Yeah was thinking same , wife loves the car because of 20 years ownership, but this time by the sounds of it, it 's the end of the road for it, now how to deal with garage do I just ask for the car back in a worst state then I brought it in and don't expect a charge.

    Sitting isn't good for cars.

Also. Old things start to break when put under pressure. And maintenance and repair is a pressure. Parts are being disassembled, re-assembled and otherwise disturbed from the alignment where they've been sitting for donkey's years. The work is still being done - but a successful outcome isn't always going to happen.

Bit like a doctor. Sometimes the patient croaks no matter how hard you try.

If you really like it, and the shell is clean - rather than just patching maybe it's time to rebuild the engine. New hoses and thermostat.

If that's too much money then send it on its way. Send it to the fire brigade and as them to give it a viking funeral.

Failed NCT on "chipped brake disc". Looks like the brake guard has been rubbing off the disc. No issues on brake test or pad/disc depth so fail is only for this visual. What do you guys reckon? Pad isn't touching this part of the disc so is it a harsh fail?

I don't know how this guy does it. If I was looking to buy a DC2 and went to view that car in the state he picked it up in I'd say all it's fit for is the scrapper.
