So my machine died last night.

    • ASRock z87 mobo
    • i5 4060k
    • Gtx 1070

Need to find some budget parts, and likely need to keep the gpu for now. Saw two 2nd hand motherboard bundles online, which I'm considering.

    Option 1 (€300-350ish)

    • gigabyte a520m ds3h v2 motherboard,
    • Amd ryzen 7 5700x
    • Wifi/Bluetooth card
    • 32gb dd4 4000mhz rgb
    • 600w psu

    Or option 2 (€500-550)

    • ryzen 9 5950x
    • msi x570 ace motherboard
    • 32 gb ddr 4 ram
    • nzxt 280mm liquid cpu cooler
    • No psu, but I can get that.

Both decent upgrades, but either s better option? No interest in 4k max gaming, mostly play Rimworld, Path of Exile, Starsector etc...

Is the old PSU dead as well? If it's a decent capacity and build quality, it could possible still be used.

The 5950x has 16 cores, and it's in principle a much more powerful CPU, there's very few games that can make use of 16 cores, even though these have been around for years. For the games you're mentioning, it's something of a false economy then.

I think the current psu is fine. Only 500w though, so not sure if that's enough. If the 5950x isn't really needed, I might just get the 5700x and use the rest for a Gpu replacement down the line.

Not 100% sure what I did to the machine tbh, used DDU to uninstall my Gpu drivers and it's totally dead now. Turns on, but nothing displays (even using the onboard HD. I port) and USB ports don't work for mouse/keyboard (though a USB light does power on). Tried resetting the cmos (took it out for 12 hours even), reseated all ram, hdds etc...nothing working. Bloody frustrating as I was looking forward to Path of Exile 2 😣

So i'm thinking i'll just buy new parts at this stage, replacing the CPU, motherboard, cooler and RAM. My PSU is old, but its 600W so should be enough for the below.

Any other suggestions? GPU will come later, so will have to stick with the GTX1070 for now.

I would suggest going AM5 unless you know you're not touching this system for 4 years - a Ryzen 7-7700 (or even 5-7500F/7600) should have same performance as 5700X3D, unless PoE2 is a CPU-hog (I haven't seen benchmarks).

Then add 2x16GB DDR5-6000 CL30 (avoid Corsair) + B650 motherboard. System would be around the same price.

Something like this? Similar enough price.

Any benefit to the 7600x over the 7600? Its around €50 extra.

Or is the €100 extra for the Ryzen 7 7700 worth it? Maybe the 7700 with the stock cooler is the way to go?

Ryzen 7500F, 7600 & 7600X have the same performance. Former has no iGPU, latter uses more power for no gain. 7600X not worth it.

Are 2 extra cores worth it? Hard to say. I went with it myself, just in case the answer is "yes".

Ryzen 7700 (8 cores/16 threads) comes with the very capable AMD Wraith Prism (92mm top-down cooler) bundled. Alternatively, you can buy a "tray" version for cheaper that comes in a tiny box but lets you budget for a good cooler.

And talking of coolers, good & cheap options include:

Went for the 7700 in the end. Figured i'd try to future proof it a bit more. Definitely need a GPU upgrade, but will get that next month maybe and chug along on with the 1070 for now.

    Cheers for the advice folks.

There's still quite a bit of life left in a 1070, I don't think you need rush into buying one any time soon. There's new AMD/nVidia GPU early next year, along with price cuts and more second hand options from upgraders. Plus there's the new Intel B580 which is cheap and reviewing well.
