of course the Russians are trying to spin what zelensky said

“370,000 required medical attention, half of whom returned to service”

Going to be quoting higher figures than the US civil war now. And the Kremlin Putin veneer is to project that it's all fine.

Jesus he'll be worse than Hitler and Stalin. And still not dead.

Russia wives now get in trouble for quoting dead beneficaries figures.

I don't suppose that he include's the injured / disabled figures in the 600'000 quoted?

Kind of think it would be better if Russia was involved in several conflicts to maybe spread their resources a bit thinner rather than have a bit more for Ukraine .

Everything needs to be legal even before talks can begin. I'm all for it!!! First the Russian Constitution needs to be restored to its original pre-Putin version. 2nd, Putin needs to be charged under the original version for his many treasonous breaches of Russian law. Then when his replacement, all legal and above board is selected, let the peace talks begin.

I Just read on the BBC the total land area the Russians have captured this year is about 2,350 sq/km, this includes parts of Kursk they have taken back from Ukraine.

For context 2,350 sq/km is an area the size of Co. Meath, I actually had to double check that. That is an abysmal return for all the men and equipment they have lost.

From the noise on here and elsewhere I just assumed Russia was taking huge chunks of Ukraine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,839 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

it costs Russia 1 man for every 1.5m2 of land taken, so an average 3 bed semi would cost them in the region of 60 men.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,097 ✭✭✭Polar101

And Ukraine is about 250 times larger than co. Meath. So at the current rate, I'd estimate Putin's war will take more than the initial plan of 3 days.

We just seen a preview of what Russian collapse would look like in under a week

The whole country is a Potemkin village

Syria was created by the European powers as a French colonial interest after the fall of the Ottoman empire. It's made up of disparate groups of religions and ethnicities. Sunni, Shia, Alawite, Druze, Christian, Arab, Kurd, Turkmen, and dozens of smaller identities.

Assad was an Alawite, a small minority in Syria, he put fellow Alawites in positions of power. The rebels who took over are of the majority Sunni Arab and Turkmen groups. Syria was a house of cards.

It's an entirely different situation with Russia in Ukraine. Both sides are dug in and committed to the fight. I highly doubt you'd get a situation where soldiers from either side would shed their uniforms and party with their conquerors.

Regarding negotiations, why would UKR bother ? Russia has zero intention of honouring any agreement, they've proven to be a bad faith actor. It makes sense for UKR to play the "we want to talk" to gain continued support from the west, but lets face it, any talks would result in nothing.

I've always felt that Trump pressed NATO members to increase spending on Armaments, in a deluded belief that would boost USA firms business, behind closed doors he's prob being pressurised to do just that. But pulling support for UKR could lead to a further increase in EU and UKR capability in local manufacturing, thus decreasing USA firms business. The balance could so easily shift to one of USA giving increased support to UKR. Only my theory and could be just nonsense, but time will tell.

What's not a theory is Russia is seriously under pressure, pulling out of Syria is such a telling indicator. Having to put all your effort in a single basket is more likely a final thrust from Russia, if they can't get some serious advance by next Sept the game is up for them. They will be heading into another winter and their economy by then will be bust. They will have raped Moscow and St Petersburg and people will be on the verge of revolt.

URK need to keep their heads, its important that international support via these forms of discussion groups continue, they are important. Its why so many bots have been on here trying to disrupt and destroy our voice. The mood and opinion of people is measured by politicians and their decisions are driven by that voice.

In fairness, I don’t recall him ever saying he had an issue with folks paying full price for the weapons, the campaign call was to stop the US government from spending millions on Ukraine. Of course, if he achieves peace in 24 hours, that argument would be irrelevant. But on the small chance he doesn’t, will the EU spend money to buy US equipment for Ukraine? I suspect there would be political ramifications for not buying EU. Time lag isn’t important…

Say, whatever happened to that particular general?

Looks like every single one of those generals at end of long tables posing with Putin and his doubles from 2022 has disappeared into a black hole

    I’m very concerned for them

Lemmings who are seeing all their comrades die in meat assaults wouldn’t celebrate avoiding the same faith?

Maybe Russians are different so, dumb as hell

Ah yeah, it's the pesky technical laws that are preventing peace and forcing Putin to continue to pound Ukrainian civilian areas and essential energy infrastructure.

It's hard to take any of your "such a tragedy" posts seriously when you come out with comments like that.

Those Russians are so far down the ol rabbit hole all they see are fairies wearing boots sitting on the window sill. 'Boose and drugs wreck the Mind' ads are needed on RT!!! 😏

We know he can't achieve "peace" in 24hr of taking office. He is not Jesus or a wizard or something, far from it. I think you are overestimating US control over what is going on as well.

Putin doesn't particularly want peace, and thinks he can win on the battlefield eventually. What he wants is also unacceptable to Ukraine to sign over for peace. At the moment they'd still rather stand and fight and invite Russia to try and take it from them if they can.

Trump can cut aid to Ukraine of course, and threaten them (and possibly bully their other supporters in a worst case scenario), but I don't think it will change Ukraine's mind and make them sue for peace rapidly.

The main effect is it will just confirm to Putin (and the "friends of Russia") he now has even better chances of winning on the battlefield, so Russian efforts to attack Ukraine with Chinese (and other) support will likely increase again. I suppose Putin may engage in some sham delaying "peace" process with Trump and the US + Zelenskyy early next year, while the glide bombs and missiles etc. keep flying daily. No quick end in sight here to me.

On the other hand Trump could increase aid to Ukraine, to pressure Russia, but Putin is all in on this and going for broke so I think he will keep going until the Russian military or economy or both suffers some kind of crack up and that ends the war. Again no rapid (24hr) conclusion, whatever Trump says or does.

On your final part, if the Europeans have no other way to quickly get some classes of weapons than an arrangement with the US for "payola" to keep what is required to support Ukraine flowing out of US military stocks (don't think they do - they don't have the weapons, and the arm makers incl. the US ones are all booked up), they will do that I think.

It is pretty important to majority of the European govt.'s that Ukraine not collapse, and Putin not get a victory.

This is all more academic in a way for the US govt., particularly for a Republican one that has antipathy towards Ukraine (and the war, seemingly the fact Ukraine bothered to fight) and we can expect to be hostile to the EU, and in my view dislikes and mistrusts their European "allies" instinctively anyway (an unfortunate and depressing process that started in the Republican party with the Iraq invasion, and has only gotten worse since).

In my view, it is kind of like supporting South Vietnam or Afghan govt. or the Kurds to them (Trump, US Republicans) IMO, highly optional. If Ukraine falls over, well it is sad and many people suffer horribly and die and so on but its a quarrel on a minor continent far away concerning unimportant people we know little about and all that. This is not the same at all for the EU/European countries.

Sergey Yevsyukov, the former director of the infamous Russian prison camp of Olenivka, where 53 Ukrainian POWs were murdered in July 2022, was killed by a car bomb in Russian-occupied Donetsk apparently.
