Liam Coburn is a great jock and doing it a hell of a long time but when I heard him on brekkie this morning he sounded like he was forcing himself to be happy. It can't be easy, you work with someone directly/indirectly for so long and then you lose your job through no fault of your own, that can't be easy on him or the overall morale.

Incidentally, there has still been no company announcement of the job losses which is really poor form by senior management. The changes to the website were the first indication to many that something was happening.

I was surprised about Conor Clear, I thought Johnny Bowe would have gotten the fill in. It might be 6-12 but 10-12 is VT'd. Should dump Love Zone, a very tired format with the same 200 songs.

All male station? Not very PC. Maybe they should look at female talent, like Laura Whitmore?

Have you seen the Mid West Radio schedule in Mayo ?

Only one female presenter on the schedule with her own full time show, on saturdays and sundays

Brendan Courtney would be a good choice for the breakfast show.

MWR is not unique, the gravitational forces of conglomerates such as NewsUK/Wireless and Bauer have pushed Irish music radio into a super massive black hole and Q102's status is a prime example, although Irish music radio was well on its way to that pinnacle of **** due to O'Brien's involvement and what later became to be Communicorp.

It is a horrible situation for any genuine jock to work on a radio station for which the format is pure drivel, where rinse and repeat playlists are the order of the day. Another poster indicated earlier that one of Q102's presenters sounded like they were feigning to be happy or interested. Well you can bet that presenter is not alone as that situation certainly exists at 98FM, Sunshine 106.8, Classic Hits Radio and countless other local radio stations across the country. There was a time when real radio people would have given their right arm to acquire a local radio license in the Dublin city and county area and would have appreciated the opportunity regardless of regulation. NewsUK/Wireless simply do not care - for them it's just another one.

Unfortunately, when those gravitational forces win out there is a point of no return and I think we may have reached that. For Q102, like the others Wireless are just out to maximize a return on their investment and in terms of the brand no matter how you may look at it you can sticky tape any name onto a bag of doggy poo - it won't change what's inside.

what is also unique about a real local station such as MWR is that it's not playlisted and remains HUGELY successful, holding onto listeners from neighbouring western and midlands counties who in an ideal world would be expected to tune into Ocean FM in Sligo, GB FM in Galway, Shannonside in Roscommon…but are loyal to MWR in Mayo.

As I type MWR, are live on air giving storm updates with the presenter in their main studio in Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo with the power out and the studio building is in darkness (as is most of the county), using the back up generator only for on-air power - while the other stations are on robojock or repeating this mornings talk show.

Now that's how local radio should be !!

When the Radio consultants/doctors are in the building, you know whats coming down the line. But some I've met seem to have bought the suit the same day as the latest "Dan O' Day book. You have websites where presenters get prep, all fishing in the same pond,so you get the same lazy content across the dial. The "How many % of men do blah blah blah every day" The agony aunt is big again,be it the "Beat Dilemma",or whatever its called on you local station, the same songs over and over again. One of the Radio Docs told me once "When you are getting fed up of playing the songs, the listener is just getting to like them"..Now we have radio courses to teach presenters..they all learn the same, and all sound the same.Radio they way we knew it is dying..Enjoy your local station while you can......

aren’t you the same lad who loved Atlantic 252 with its 25 minute rotations and wacky wacky jock names? And you’re giving out about rinse and repeat playlists? Here’s Kiss from a Rose .. again. Don’t go anywhere in case you miss Wayne Kerr and the morning fun bunch playing another loooong wave of Lisa Loeb

Yes I suppose that I have really called out 98FM, but a re-reg with 3 posts who has followed me onto 2 different threads? I wonder who that could be 🤔

I can't see Kathryn Thomas wanting to work outside of RTÉ.

    No, you're supposed to say "I can't answer, I can't answer that..."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9 aoletsgo

that doesn’t explain the mass cull in Q however. I’ve also heard the name Kathyrn Thomas mentioned and I wonder if that will simply be a pre-recorded show.

The domain name Virginradio.ie is a thing. Registered last year, but modified a few weeks ago.

I had a feeling a rebrand was coming…it explains the cull on presenters

If Tubridy stays in London he can start doing links saying virgin, which will work for Dublin, as I don’t think he does much station ID, which is quite unusual. Kind of like the way both Spin stations just say Spin in the links.

Looks unconnected, possibly someone squatting it.

Its not registered using the domain registrar that Wireless use, nor is its email config the same. Its using Blacknight and Cloudflare as email MX.

All other Wireless domains are registered by Tibus and use Proofpoint as their email MX

    Wow.

Could we see C103 as Virgin Radio Cork, Live 95 as Virgin Radio Limerick and LMFM as Virgin Radio Louth Meath?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 350 ✭✭chilloutrelax

It would make it much easier to network if the station name is similar.

I’d guess if they were doing that, it would be gradual, station by station over a year.

Yep, Tibus is owned by Wireless and has been since the UTV days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 455 ✭✭nonetheless

I am sure the folks at Bauer UK will be monitoring the situation at Q102 and how NewsUK/Wireless approach and address a poorly performing radio station. What maybe or what may actually happen at Q102 could lead to some cause for concern for some over at Baloney House.

The setup at Bauer in Ireland has the advantage of pulling resources to alternative services that are located in their Irish HQ building which has already happened. Let's just hope that they don't reduce some some of those presenters involved to janitorial duties if Today FM's help needed doesn't work out for them.

You did mention Classic Hits and Sunshine in your rage post earlier when both of those stations are owned by Bay Broadcasting. Owned by people who have been actively involved in radio since their mid teens. Why the hatred toward them?
