What's the betting rugby twitter will be dead silent about the Stade 7 head contact…

Ah, in the circumstances a penalty sufficed. If it happened before the 2 reds then it was a yellow.

That was not just a penalty, that was an arm by the side, shoulder shunted into the head and neck area.

Should have been Yellow, irrespective of earlier sanctions.

Stade are abject, but Munster can be rightly concerned at the way they took the foot off the gas against 13 mugs. That sort of attitude matters down the line when qualification ranking are being settled.

Ah yes it did! Especially as he wasnt representing Ireland or an Irish club!

Good thing they got that last try was a very poor 15-20 mins after the 2 reds. But 5 points in the bag is job done

Stade did well after the cards, kept it up the jumper and some clever lineout moves. We couldn't get decent ball.

A good day out, lots to be positive about. Hopefully they'll bring the good form away from home.

New injury joker prop looks great!

Wasn't many home town decisions. Not sure what game you were watching.

He didn't bring the player down. Casey didn't land on his head, because POM realised the danger and managed to push them over

Not exactly an impressive win, game became a mess after the red cards and the wind picking up. Starting back row were excellent. Bleuler should be kept if can keep him, very decent outing by him. Crowley and Casey were very slick, bodes well for both of them come 6N selection time. Ahbrams looks a good find and Daly scored a great try. I have been super impressed with Tom Farell too, very good defender in the outside channel. Big test ahead now next weekend.

Quick word on the reds, Nankivell was very lucky and the 2 Stade red cards were stonewall reds. Simple as.

5 points and no injuries is a decent night’s work, even considering the quality of the opposition. Some encouraging signs this past fortnight, especially the set piece and defense. I think if we’re good there next week, we can get a result.

There’s potential in the backs we have; Casey, Crowley, Nanks, Farrell, Abrahams, can all create attacks. The play of Nankivell and Farrell in the centre has been one of the positive aspects of the season so far.

I thought we were lucky with our yellow card, they fully deserved their two and should probably have got a yellow too

POM was my MotM but Crowley had a great game too.

Killer, Ahern and Haley all took part in the warm up before the game

Really pleased with the result, however we were absolutely terrible after the second red card. No sugar coating it, we kicked away possession with a two-man overlap!!

If it was an under 14 club match you’d be tearing your hair out, not to mention professionals!

Munster should have gone into rugby 7’s mode, flash it over and back til there’s an opening and score a try every few minutes after that.

Instead, kick away possession, and then give away penalties, concede a simple (well taken) try from a lineout, and basically do nothing to take advantage of the numbers.

Munster should have crash balled them to a standstill and then flashed it wing to wing until we score.

Even from our own try line it should be a chance to run the length of the pitch, the normal rules of clearing the lines etc should go out the window.

Whoever was captain for the last 20 minutes was anonymous, no discernible leadership.

Age with all of this. Between Casey and POM for my POTM, they were both excellent. Munster played some nice attacking rugby, but the old day 20 minutes were poor, they can't be switching off like that, it'll cost them.

Just home & v happy with that

Farrell, Kendellan, Bleuler, half backs were super.

Great to see Takkies getting a run of games hope he kicks on, he is the only bit of x factor & real out&out gas we have.

The forcing of play in previous games all season bar the Ospreys game sees to be gone thankfully...players seem more relaxed/trusting in the play patterns

The only concern from the starting 15 I have is Nash...he did pick up a niggle in ire camp but he didn't seem to have his usual zip/springyness about him...hopefully that will resolve v quickly.

Nxt 5 games really define the season.

Happy young lads in the car on the way home shortened the road 😀

Munster are in a bad way. We were shockingly poor v 13 for 25 minutes. Really going no where fast in this competition. The crowd size was a poor effort for round 1. I have serious concerns about the clubs finances on the back of tonight.

We will likely get into the knockout stages but won't be next or near competing when it gets to the business end of the tournament. As bad as combination for Munster as I've seen in 25 years. I left reasonably deflated about the state the club is in.

    POM had a superb game.1

What about the previous 55mins(10 with 14 players& we scored)

V pessimistic view considering what has gone on in the club since end of Oct.

If we can get a full squad together we could have a good run in the URC yet, quarter finals would be bonus territory in CC

    build on that then

I don't get tue major negativity. No munster didn't need to or should have went into "rugby 7s mode" after tye 2nd red. What would point of that be they just didn't need to. Just because they were down 2 permantly doesn't mean you throw out your whole philosophy and structure to ply harlem globetrotter style play.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 391 ✭✭exiledawaynothere

I thought Munster played very well. Complacency after the second red but that is not unusual for teams.

It's a pity that Andy Farrell seems to have his mind made up about him. 15 passes for a no.8 is phenomenal. He has a great pair of hands. There was a golden opportunity missed to play him in the AI series just gone instead of forcing it with Tadgh Beirne at no.6. Even in the no.20 shirt he would have been very valuable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,030 ✭✭✭✭phog

It used to annoy a bit that he wasn't getting in to some of the Irish camps but now, I've resigned myself to the fact his ship has sailed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,762 ✭✭✭50HX

He's been looked at before in Ire camp, obviously the coaches don't feel he is bringing enough.

Stats will tell you one side of it (& they are seriously impressive stats).

I feel it's speed on getting back into positional play after, hard tackles, clear outs etc that's holding him back.

If you look at that aspect alone he is slower than a Doris or vdf in doin so

Long may he keep up the levels for us

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,317 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

I think Coombes is substantially slower than any international 8 I can think of. I think footwork is almost more important than power when carrying at the top level of international rugby, and I'm not sure Coombes' direct upright carrying style would translate well. That said, he's a very good player and I'd never be disappointed to see him in an international squad.

I think his best chance at a test career would have been as a tighthead lock.

Its not holding back McCarthy who is one of the slowest players to get back on his feet and back into the line. Coombes work rate is outstanding, and its ridiculous to say he's excluded from the Irish team because he doesn't get back to his feet fast enough after a tackle or ruck entry.
