Your environment is used to strong winds from the west or south west. So previously solid objects including trees might be more inclined to break apart or fall.

One of the strongest UKMO HI Res models I have ever seen, inclined to overdo it a bit but if you took off 5-10km/h still extremely strong and damaging. These charts just keep on upgrading run after run, haven't seen one like this in a long time, has the look of Darwin all right. Might see more counties under Red warning, at this stage they might even have to make more or less all the country under red for a time. I would take the warnings as very high end Orange at least and locally could reach Red warning level. People will have to look at the charts and listen to advice from met Eireann re travel and use common sense. Here in Kerry I wont be stirring out this evening even if I had too. I would be expecting almost nationwide damage from this with numerous trees and poles down, wires strewn about the place, structural damage, local flooding, if anyone can put off going out in it they should. It is going to take the authorities time to clear the damage in the morning and remembering it will be still quite windy so will take crews time to get around. I would be especially careful in coastal counties and midland flat counties especially on exposed motorways, and anywhere with a bit of elevation is going to get a fair whack from this. High sided vehicles should not be out in this. Definitely time to source batteries, charge power banks etc. Places could be without power for a while after this.

Excuse the long post with all the charts but good to have a close look at it.

If I was driving myself I would. But getting a lift and they’re very nervous about going now there’s red!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,346 ✭✭✭✭Cluedo Monopoly

Have mashed potato before you go out. Hit the shorts early. Preferably tequila but don't swallow the worm. That will calm the nerves somewhat. Don't do any coke because you might get over confident. Be home at midnight. Avoid trampolines and squids. Then pray to all the gods you know. Watch the toy show on Sunday, it will seem like the movie Twister but there will be something for everyone in the audience.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

This mornings GFS has backed off a small bit on the winds for the west and nw coast. showing higher winds for the east coasting, in fact if they have red for the west then they should have red for Dublin going by the latest gfs charts

To add to that we'd have plenty of gusty storms from the SW that made our slates do a jig but the last one that did damage with the same force winds was Eunice which came from the NW.

Not to go too off topic but the Late Late Show (Regular and toy show) are broadcast live. It's not pre-recorded. For the toy show, some segments are pre-recorded, usually on the day of broadcast, however the show is a live event. Not sure where on earth that you heard that it's not a live show.

Speaking to people in work here and majority don't even know a storm is on the way. Most seem to have the "sure when it's windy now they issue a storm warning" attitude. I told one guy who's heading over on a ferry tomorrow morning from Dublin port to see a football match in England and he seemed unbothered.

Isn't a red warning, stay at home or shelter until it's passed? The red comes into effect at 10 tonight so maybe err on the side of caution and skip it. I'd be surprised if the event isn't curtailed or cancelled now anyway?? It's flat calm now and seems silly but in 12 hours all changes.

Yeah. See the person I’m getting a lift wouldn’t be able to collect me till around 11 so I think I’ll cancel it. Wouldn’t mind but have hair and makeup booked! Would be raging to get them done only for the party to then be cancelled lol

Insurance companies don't like paying out and could use it as an excuse.

Thanks for your updates as ever Meterorite58. Need to keep a close eye on this one alright as could be very damaging gusts almost anywhere.

They can't make up excuses that aren't covered in the T&Cs. Unless you can find an insurance T&Cs that says they don't cover it, it's covered.

Look on the bright side, you'll be dolled up and looking well for the Toy show.

I'm supposed to be meeting friends in town this evening, I live within 5 mins walk of the pub but am in two minds,I'd say a few will be cancelling anyway.

Out of lack of knowledge and curiosity, how far out will they call a red warning if it does go from Orange to Red?

For those bothered about the toy show. Maybe charge your phones, laptops, tablets, power banks and hope the masts dont get blown away, also have candles.

I say a very small percentage don't have that equipment in the house. Most have multiples of them.

My power went for 2 days in dublin last year. With a gas stove and all of the above it was great. Also the kids and other half went to her mothers so it was double great!

I drive down on the old N7 to Limerick on Christmas Eve 97. You used to go through the old towns then, Portlaoise, Mountrath, Borris in Ossory etc. The squalls that evening in a car were ferocious. I had my trusty Starlet but had to pull over a couple of times it was that bad. Driving through the towns, dark, no power, swerving round bits of rubbish and debris etc. Ah youthful exuberance, I wouldn't do it now. Looking at everything re charts, warnings etc this Darragh might match that, so I'm basing my advice on that.

Is this a wind event only or can we expect torrential rain also ?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,640 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Thanks for suggestion wazzledazzle but in our experience they don't work very well. The best thing is if people try to stay on topic and use the other discussion threads for the banter.

Worst of winds for most at night so hopefully keeps people safe.

Premier League leaders Liverpool could see their lead down to 4 points by end of weekend as can't see Merseyside Derby being played in 85mph winds.

ARPEGE 06Z looking especially windy now for Kerry early . The track through Kerry, Clare, Limerick and Cork reminds me of Darwin. The very strongest winds going through quickly but doing all the damage.

Its not a set time. As soon as the data points to the extension of a Red, and the senior forecasters concur, they will call it.

Very likely Wexford and Wicklow will go Red at some point this afternoon. Perhaps neighbouring coastal counties too.

11am TAF's are out, Knock, Cork and Dublin gusting to 65kts, Shannon gusting to 60kts.

Strange that Shannon has a lower forecast gust than airports North, South and East of it.

    Our prevailing winds are SW'ly.

When we get large named storms, the direction of the strongest winds,on the southern extent of the low pressure, tend to between SE and W.

Northwesterlies that arrive with Storm Darragh will impact trees and structures that may normally be sheltered from typical storm gusts, by mountains, forests, other structures etc. And so weaker structures and trees that have never seen a problem before may be damaged.
