Where can I find out about historic weather events?

Its said that our cottage flooded sometime maybe in the 70's. Thats not unusual as we live by a river but that time it flooded up to the bottom of the windows about 3ft deep, at worst we've only had it a foot deep.

Its said the reason for the flood was heavy snow in the Comeragh Mountains that thawed out very quickly. So I wondered if there is anywhere I can trawl through weather records to find a possible date for the event?

    Yes there is.

If you go to www.floodinfo.ie; then select Flood Maps and then select Past Flood Events in the lower left corner. Tick the boxes to relevant tabs to display the information. Any past flood events will be shown on the map with a red triangle. Click on the red triangle to obtain a summary of the event. Click the other boxes to display the actual flood records and/or other information e.g. media articles.

Thanks, that gives me a weather event for 1989 and I already have all the reports for that one. It was a storm that caused a lot of damage on the coast. It wouldn't have caused the flood I'm trying to research. We are about 250m back from the sea (at high tide). Another cottage nearer the sea has historically flooded in bad storms from the sea and we have flooded when there has been a lot of rain from the river.

The only clue I have is that the event was supposed to have happened after a very quick thaw of snow. Several people including a doctor (who visited the house during the flood) tell the story and I'd like to pin down a date for it.

Any neighbours of that vintage in your area? They might be able to help in establishing an approximate date.

Even people who were not alive then may will have heard about it from their elders.

    Thats very helpful

Heavy snow across Ireland (06 February 1974)

looks like one that is worth further investigation, but there are a few others in that list.

As strong as Darragh may be, there was a stronger storm following a similar track across ulster on 8 Dec 1886. The barometric pressure fell to 927 mbs in Belfast, considerable damage was reported in Ireland and Britain, and loss of lives at sea off coast of Lancashire. (138 yrs ago and 47.9 yrs after the great storm of 7 Jan 1839).

Did you try searching the Irish Newspaper Archive? There are national, Munster and Waterford papers covered so you would think there'd be something there.
